How much did your dd grow after starting their period? (Especially if they started young?)

Inspired by the how tall are your children thread…

Dd started her periods last month at 10years 10 months. She is 5ft 1.

Shes always been towards the 90th centile mark for height (and under that for weight).

DD hasn’t really had much of a ‘growth spurt’ - she’s always been one of the taller ones out of her friends and is probably as proportionately tall against them now going into year 6 as she was starting reception.

I keep on reading that girls tend to grow an average of 2 inches after their periods start over about 2 years. Even if Dd grows double that amount she’ll end up 5ft 5 which would be short for my side of the family.

Just wondering if that’s a bit outdated now with girls starting their periods younger these days.
How much did your dd grow after menarche? And how long did it take her to get to that height?

Dd1 started in y6 when she was a bit under my height (5' 6.5"), she's about to go in to y10 & is just 5' 9" & still growing. She's always just got steadily taller though & never really had growth spurts as such. Her predicted adult height was 5' 8".

Started periods just after 10th birthday. At that point she was the tallest girl in her year at school (of around 60 girls).

She only grew a few more centimetres, had hit her adult height by about 11.5 and was the second smallest (DD is keen that the distinction is made) girl in her year by about age 13/14.

Ponderingwindow · 29/08/2024 15:11

Maybe another inch. She stopped at 4’10”. Exceedingly short for our family. She has been tiny since birth. She did not start her period young.

Girls grow for another 1-2 years after starting their periods. It's not 'outdated' because it's just biology.

My sister started her periods at 11 (summer before year 7) - she's 5'2 (in comparison, I started at 14 and am 5'4).

My MIL started at age 10 and is 5'1.

silverbirches · 29/08/2024 15:13

Have her feet stopped growing yet? That's the first sign really.

DD was 152cm in height when she started her periods at around the same age as your dd, and stopped growing aged 14-15 at 167cm.

horumforaforum · 29/08/2024 15:22

Thank you.

I don’t think her feet have stopped growing yet. She’s about a size 5.

This thread is old but was wondering this same question, has your DD grown much since?

Jellycats4life · 29/12/2024 23:28

My daughter started a few weeks before turning 11 and seems to have reached her adult height now at 13. She’s around 5’ 3”, the same height as me and ironically I also was one of the tallest girls at primary school only to pretty much stop growing once I went to secondary.

Ginkypig · 29/12/2024 23:29

I can’t help with my children but I can tell you my experience.

i started at 91/2 I grew prob another inch or so max and feet by 1 or 2 sizes.

By 11 at the start of high school I was 5’7-71/2” and foot size 7 and i stayed the same ever since

My 11 year old is only 4ft 6 so I hope she doesn’t start her periods any time soon if she’s only likely to grow a couple of inches afterwards 😬

Squidgemoon · 29/12/2024 23:51

I started at just 12 and 5’4”, grew another 2 inches to 5’6”. 2 years more of growing sounds about right for me and all my friends.

Looneytune253 · 30/12/2024 10:01

My DD started at 8 and I was really worried about her height. I did get some advice at the time and the doc said not to worry. She had a bit of a growth spurt in the Cpl of years after she started and was 5'7 by the time she left primary and has stayed that height so it wasn't too bad. She was the tallest kid in the whole school and taller than most of the teachers but she's not now, now in year 10.

GroovyChick87 · 30/12/2024 10:08

I remember being one of the tallest girls in the class when I was 10. I was about 5'2 with size 5 feet and seemed so much bigger than the other girls. I started my periods when I was 12. I don't think I grew much height wise after the age of 10, maybe about an inch and a half and my feet are still a size 5 now as an adult. I just became curvier and am probably shorter than most women.

DeanElderberry · 30/12/2024 10:40

I grew more than an inch in my first term at university, about six years after 1st m p. I don't know whether my habit of lunching on a pint of milk and an apple (cheap, easy) contributed to all that bone growth.

AmusedGoose · 30/12/2024 10:56

Both my daughter and I started aged 10 and grew very little afterwards. Maybe 3 cms? The pituitary gland concentrates on growth until puberty then concentrates on hormones.

My eldest started at 13 but still grew right up to 19, her dsis started later, 16, and didn't grow any more despite being short

Elfie23 · 30/12/2024 11:25

I started a couple of days after turning 11, I was 5ft 5ins with size 8 feet.

I was 5ft 8ins by the time I was 13 and haven't grown in height or shoe size since (now 37)

DD is 10years 6 months size 6 shoe and 5ft tall. She hasn't started yet and I'm wondering if there will be a huge growth spurt or not... the red book tracks her to be 5ft 7ins fully grown...let's see ....

ladymalfoy45 · 30/12/2024 11:38

Our DD started in yr 5. She's 5 6 now. But DH is 6 3. I'm 5 8;

Foxingday · 30/12/2024 11:41

My DD started at 10 and was the tallest person in her class (she hated it) she was about 5ft 6 at this point and now wearer 5ft 8.

WaitingForMojo · 30/12/2024 11:58

Dd started at 11 and only grew another inch. She was 5ft 6 at 11 and 5ft 7 now at 15.

WaitingForMojo · 30/12/2024 12:00

Her feet were size 8 at 9 and didn’t grow after that

RuthW · 30/12/2024 12:08

Started age 12 in year 7. Hardly grew after that. She's 5 foot 3 now, late 20s

She was the tallest in her year age 8.

Scottishmum1984 · 30/12/2024 18:32

This was not my personal experience. Was 5'9 age 13, got period age 14.5 - I am still 5'9 :)
