Denby or not?

I'm thinking of changing my plates etc., I've got far too many plates and bowls of every sort. Now it is just me and DC I could get rid of everything and replace it with a small set, freeing up two cupboards in my kitchen.

I've been looking at Denby, which I never used to like (the sound of cutlery on the rustic stuff). Still not sure if I will like the sound, but I like some of the designs more than I used to.

Is there anything else out there that is likely to be around for years or other dishwasher, warming oven, microwave safe alternatives?

We've bought a Denby set and love it. It's really sturdy, hard-wearing stuff. We live fairly near the outlet so get pieces at a cheaper price, which is nice.

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 29/08/2024 14:40

Le Creuset is the obvious one. We've got a few pieces of Denby and they've done well over the years. If you do go for Denby and have a Tesco Clubcard you can cash in your points for a discount on their website.

I’ve still got Denby plates from the seventies. They’re well made and stand up to family life.

I want a new set of crockery but my Denby is still going after 25 years!
This is our everyday set, regularly in the dishwasher.

I’ve got a plain Denby set. Had it nearly 20yrs and it looks as good as the day I got it. And I’m really clumsy!

Houseplanter · 29/08/2024 14:57

I have a big collection of one of Denbys designs. It's used daily and is still perfect.

Would love a change but can't justify it.. which is the only problem with Denby imo.

Same!

We had Denby on our wedding list. It will be 25 years old next month and despite every day use/dishwasher still looks great.

MoonAndStarsAndSky · 29/08/2024 15:10

We have Denby and I highly recommend it. I like the look of it and it's durable and hard wearing for dishwashers etc. Le Creuset is a bit too heavy for me.

Ilovemyshed · 29/08/2024 15:11

Personally I would find a great catering supplier with a retail counter and buy there.

GrimeldaUpNorth · 29/08/2024 15:14

Thanks all. I don't fancy Le Creuset.

I could drive to a Denby outlet (20 miles), the webpage is giving me a 20% discount code at present, does anyone know how that compares to outlet prices?

I am not sure what pattern I like the most atm. I was thinking about mixing two of the Heritage designs, would that be weird?

I have a full set of Denby in the cream with dark green edging. I also have casserole dishes, jugs, mugs, platters etc - the full works! It’s the only crockery I have, so used every day and for entertaining. I have chipped the underside of a bowl and small plate over the years but not noticeably.

At age 66, I don’t plan to ever need to buy new crockery!

JadeSeahorse · 29/08/2024 15:23

We've been married 45 years and always had Denby. Currently on our third set which we changed during lockdown in 2020.

If you are thinking of driving to Denby Village - as we do - I would strongly suggest you look at the "Seconds". We bought brand new for our first set as newlyweds but both subsequent sets have been mostly seconds. You need to look through them closely but if you can find what you want you can save a considerable amount. 👍

Definitely recommend!

stuffnthings · 29/08/2024 15:24

We've got Denby, bought back in the early 00s and it's still going strong. And also have my Grandmother's Denby's Cottage Blue set, which dates back many, many decades and is still in great condition. Definitely worth the spend!

twistyizzy · 29/08/2024 15:24

We treated ourselves to a full Denby set in Linen a few years ago and I'm really pleased with it. Still looks in really good condition.

RedToothBrush · 29/08/2024 15:27

We spent ages looking for an alternative when we bought ours years ago. Nothing compares. We bought seconds to reduce the cost - you can't tell.

Several of our best friends have Denby and theirs is older and still going strong.

I don't think there's a better option.

SensibleSigma · 29/08/2024 15:29

I like it but it’s heavy!

I’ve been thinking about swapping for something like the coloured glass that I can’t remember the name of!

GrimeldaUpNorth · 29/08/2024 15:30

I'd drive to York or Castleford @JadeSeahorse, both seem to have outlet shops. I could go to the village easily on my way home from a trip in October, but not sure I'd bother other than that (150 miles).

I have the one with the green rim, like the blue rimmed one, I like that the plates are quite deep, DH likes the size of the bowls for his porridge. I got some from Harts of Stur which generally has a good price on kitchenware.

If you have Tesco Clubcard points you can get it with them from Denby

GrimeldaUpNorth · 29/08/2024 15:32

Thank you everyone. Sadly no Tesco nearby here so I don't have clubcard points.

Autumn1990 · 29/08/2024 15:32

Definitely buy the seconds.
The only problem with Denby is it lasts a very very long time almost to the point you are sick of it.

GrimeldaUpNorth · 29/08/2024 15:33

Has anyone bought seconds online unseen?

OP posts:
JadeSeahorse · 29/08/2024 15:33

Ah sorry @GrimeldaUpNorth my fault for automatically assuming you were more Midlands based.

Might be worth calling in during a journey elsewhere but definitely not 150 miles.

twistyizzy · 29/08/2024 15:35

GrimeldaUpNorth · 29/08/2024 15:33

Has anyone bought seconds online unseen?

Yes I got a serving bowl set of 3 as seconds. Couldn't see how they were seconds as to my eyes there was no difference

SensibleSigma · 29/08/2024 15:48

Does anyone have an answer to my bowl question? All the bowls I see now are deep and round. I prefer the shallow open type as they sit well in the dishwasher.

What am I missing that everyone else likes the deep ones, and how do I find the open ones?
