Denby or not?

I'm thinking of changing my plates etc., I've got far too many plates and bowls of every sort. Now it is just me and DC I could get rid of everything and replace it with a small set, freeing up two cupboards in my kitchen.

I've been looking at Denby, which I never used to like (the sound of cutlery on the rustic stuff). Still not sure if I will like the sound, but I like some of the designs more than I used to.

Is there anything else out there that is likely to be around for years or other dishwasher, warming oven, microwave safe alternatives?

I have had the Denby Linen for at least 15 years, and I still love it, as a pp said it is bombproof!
What I don't like is the Denby placemats and coasters, they seem to absorb greasy marks so easily and look terrible within weeks.

NotMeNoNo · 29/08/2024 21:31

I've had to replace a few pieces over the years, but there is masses of secondhand Denby around either on ebay or websites like Chinasearch, if you need to replace a discontinued piece. It really does go on and on.

I have Denby Speckle for day to day. It is brilliant.

Glad you have gone for it OP, hope you love it!

Happy new Denby @GrimeldaUpNorth we have a mix of firsts and seconds. A couple of the seconds have slightly different omitted glazes but they have stood the test of time.

beetr00 · 29/08/2024 22:39

as pp's have said, the seconds are fine @GrimeldaUpNorth the deep noodle bowls are fab. Other Heritage here, apologies for the looong link

eta; oops! can see you've already ordered, you'll love them 😊

I love the Manor Green design that was first made in the 1930s. Evidently the generations who bought it are now slipping away as I'm finding ever more of it in charity shops. I don't have dinner plates and bowls, but the serving dishes, jugs, and bowls are lovely.

Love their plates, especially their pasta bowls, and also have a couple of their cast iron casseroles, but their placemats are ridiculously poor quality. It’s like someone forgot to seal them.

We’ve got Denby Reflex. They only made it for a few years so we can’t easily replace bits now (not that we’ve broken much).

I do still love it but it is very heavy and chunky - it doesn’t take much to fill up the dishwasher. And we hardly ever use the bowls at all because they are huge!

Us too. Love it. It was our wedding presents.

Keswick1967 · 29/08/2024 22:50

I’ve got the Regency Green, bought from the factory shop in the village 30 years ago absolutely love it, really good quality.

SweetLathyrus · 30/08/2024 08:06

I like your mix and match approach @GrimeldaUpNorth , I think those will look good together.

On dishwashing, we have a slimline built-in dish washer and don't find the 'chunky-ness' a problem except for the cereal bowls, but they do fit on the top shelf ok. They are, however, perfect soup portion size for us (we don't eat cereal!).

Bowl use is very personal but I use the wide pasta bowls possibly more than dinner plates because the dinner plates are big and if I want a smaller dinner it looks better in the pasta bowls (eg baked pot. and salad type thing). We use the rice bowls all the time, they are a good ice cream portion size, and great for sides.

Imanontoday · 30/08/2024 08:13

It lasts forever, which is both a blessing and a curse. We are 30 years down the line with ours and it looks as good as the day we were gifted it. I did buy a new set of white, as wanted a change and we use that more now.the Denby sits in the cupboard more as overflow 😂

KohlaParasaurus · 30/08/2024 08:45

35 years on, I still slightly regret not holding out for Denby for "wedding china" when I got marriage for the first time. My mother thought it was awful looking stuff and would go out of date, and my husband to be wasn't keen. I got gold-rimmed bone china with a floral pattern on it similar to my granny's best tea set.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/08/2024 08:48

We have a full set from when we were married 25 years ago including casserole dishes and serving bowls etc,the only thing we've replaced is the cups and I buy them with Tesco vouchers. Imperial Blue.

Icequeen01 · 30/08/2024 09:01

We had our Denby dinner service for over 30 years but we had chipped or broken a few pieces. We went to stay in an AirBnB who had the Azure set which I loved. As soon as we got home we went to our local retail outlet and bought a whole dinner service with a couple of serving bowls and some mugs. I love the colours of it.

Denby or not?
TheFutureIs · 30/08/2024 10:00

Love my Denby dinner set, get it using Tesco vouchers so effectively "free",
It's really hard wearing and has survived several drops!
It was one of my first purchases when I got out of a bad relationship, if I wanted pink plates I was going to get them!!!

JC03745 · 30/08/2024 11:53

OP- I see you have ordered some Denby bits, how exciting!
I haven't read ALL the replies other than yours. Using Tesco vouchers, I bought a Denby James Martin set many years ago. Mine is plain white, so more common, but I've bought bits off ebay for a fraction of the price, so keep an eye out there too.

The only issue I've had is that 1 set of dinner plates must be mm's larger than the other, because those ones don't fit in the microwave!

GrimeldaUpNorth · 03/09/2024 20:22

Thought I would come back and update. I like my new plates.

I bought a lot of seconds and I don't mind half of them which might just have a very slight colour variation, on the outside of a bowl for instance. The other half have a blip in the glaze, either textural, like a crumb beneath it, or a bit missing on the edge of the bowl.

They're ok but I think I will replace the ones with obvious faults with non seconds, or seconds I choose myself, in time.

Thank you for this thread Mumsnetters.
Having read and seen how robust and enduring long time owners have found Denby I have now bought some. I was considering brand new but have just bought a huge second hand set from a hospice shop at a fraction of the cost.
You have saved me a lot of money and I now have a very lovely set for 16 people. (DH is a vicar so have to cater)
