How do you clear out your inbox when it's got to this state?

Clearly my ostrich approach isn't working 😆🪶

Start marking new incoming as spam if they are, then work through emails using serach and mark as spam addresses you dont know and/or long forgotten.
Spam and trash email usually get deleted after 30 days

Be ruthless!! all is not lost , changing to a new email address is hard work when you have to register/change on websites

WitchSharkadder · 29/08/2024 09:56

I have 164,000. The problem is, I've grown quite fond of watching the red blob grow, so they're not going anywhere.

Apolloneuro · 29/08/2024 10:00

You can’t. Delete them all and anything important people will email again when you don’t respond.

Moving forward, deal with your emails every day and unsubscribe on a daily basis as spam comes in.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/08/2024 10:02

There’s an ai programme (can anyone remember what it’s called?) that will summarise your inbox and give You key actions.

after you’ve done that, delete the lot!

eta co-pilot, it’s called co-pilot!

redskydarknight · 29/08/2024 10:03
  1. Create a new folder
  2. Copy everything that is more than a couple of days' old into the folder
  3. Tackle the stuff from the last couple of days. The aim is to go into an email once only.
-If it's from a friend, delete or reply as needed (and maybe suggest friends uses WhatsApp/whatever social media you would prefer in future) -If it's something else relevant you need to read (e.g. school email) then read, action, delete (or save off to another folder for later reference). -If it's marketing email that you don't want, then set your preferences to unsubscribe. Then you won't get any more -If it's a marketing email that you do want, then file it off somewhere. (although if you do want it, then why have you not been reading them?) -If it's spam then mark it is as such and they will get filtered out in future. -Repeat step (3) every day. It should keep your inbox very minimal

For the old stuff you saved off, .

  1. Delete anything more than a month old
  2. Then sort by sender.
  3. Delete any old marketing emails
  4. See what's left and take a view on whether it really needs reading or whether you can just delete
  5. Aim to delete the old stuff in stages (just one sender a day would be a start)
Pocketfullofdogtreats · 29/08/2024 10:04

Be careful about never deleting - I have a friend I've twice tried to email and message comes back saying "too long" and to rephrase. I ended up just saying 'Hello' and it wouldn't accept it. When I told her she said yes,her inbox was full!

But to delete, I find changing to alphabetical helps, then you can delete all the e.g. Amazon ones in one go.
Then go through and find the ones you want to keep and transfer them to a new folder. Delete the rest. Transfer the keepers to Inbox.

In gmail on iPhone how do you find in-read emails? I have about 7 or so but cannot find them no matter how long I scroll down my emails. It drives me mad not knowing what I haven't seen!

Pineappleprep · 29/08/2024 10:19

My mum has 109'000+ unread, it hurts every time I see it. They date back to 2006

Galiana · 29/08/2024 10:21

I have 169,470.

Do I win?

Edited to say, unread, obviously.

is there a filter for “unread only” or “unread first”?

That’s just a guess. I hate gmail on my phone.

DeclutteringNewbie · 29/08/2024 10:28

Do I win? 136k+ unread emails.

If you're in Gmail, Search by key words (like shops you have emails from) select all, press and hold the circle on one of them, unsubscribe and report as spam, delete all. Do for everything.

You absolute genius!! Thanks :)

TeaGinandFags · 29/08/2024 10:35

If it's boring, pay a teenager (they always want money) to sit and delete them for you. Set a date.

Or grab a bottle of red wine and spend an afternoon at the kitchen table with your laptop. The time will slip past on silken gliders. 🍷🍷🍷

Small sips only or you know what will happen.

brightyellowflower · 29/08/2024 10:36

You must made me check mine 19000+

For those of you with thousands of unread messages, do delete them, it lowers the burden on data centers and saves energy. Emails have a surprisingly large carbon footprint. You should also unsubscribe from unwanted newsletters for the same reason.

Please don't report as spam if you actually signed up for them at some point, especially as a small business - it only takes a second to unsubscribe properly.

If you get too many spam reports you stop being able to send emails and it is a nightmare for tiny independent businesses, especially when it's not spam, it's something that you have actually signed up for!

TheABC · 29/08/2024 11:03

I suggest using Trimbox as a way to go through, unsubscribe and batch-delete emails. Use the free trial and then, depending on how bad your inbox is, pay for the first month.

ChickenandaCanofCoke · 29/08/2024 11:04

Pretty shitty to sign up for a newsletter, probably in return for a discount, and then mark it as spam!

RB68 · 29/08/2024 11:12

Anything over two years old delete or put in an archive folder for deletion in 6mths when you know you wont need them.

Rest go through them for 15min each morning and or until you have deleted say 50.

But I can't talk I last about a week doing this so generally I archive and wait then delete. I now also have set up folders for critical stuff and make sure to transfer when it comes in
