Only since menopause have I put on some weight. I'm not huge but bigger than I used to be and I don't like it!! Is it easy to lose a stone in a month and what's the best way!

Thanks

Depends what weight you are and what your current diet and exercise level is.

cutting out carbs and upping your exercise is a good start - I’d say it’s possible if you are strict with yourself 👍 defo cut the carbs/sugar though

Santasbigredbobblehat · 29/08/2024 07:45

Cut out booze and carbs and you’ll be surprised.
Have a look at Keto diet plans.

teacoffeeorpassthegin · 29/08/2024 07:46

I'm 10 stone and want to be 9.

I walk the dog, it's a power walk but not running!

I think my diet isn't bad but I know I need to cut out evening snacks!!

Yes booze is a good shout as I've drunk more over the summer than I usually drink.

How tall are you?

suki1964 · 29/08/2024 07:57

Yes its possible, I did so and it was actually quite easy

I cut out the wine, if I fancy a drink its a spirit and diet mixer - so many empty calories in wine. Cut the bread - made me have to rethink breakfast and lunch which is now usually overnight oats for breakfast and a salad for lunch using stuff like couscous and quinoa as the carb and something high protein - tinned fish, eggs, cooked meats etc. And dinners, as long as it was cooked from scratch - remained as I would have always had but filled the plate with veggies - so no sneaky take outs mid week cos I cba. Oh and obviously the crisps, cakes . biscuits etc became a rare treat

Came off at an average of 2lb a week and never felt deprived or missing out and its been off for a year . Just had a gain for the first time since as have had house guests the past two weeks who bought a huge amount of snacking foods into the house. Now they are gone, the snack bits are away and the weight will go again. As long as the food I consume makes it to my mouth via a knife and fork I can maintain, if it goes in via fingers I gain

Pandasandtigers · 29/08/2024 07:58

Possibly have a rethink because losing a stone in 3 months is possibly but then after that the weight will slowly creep up again.

The best way is to adopt a healthier lifestyle for a more permanent fix, but if you just want to do the 3 months, hit it hard with gym and exercise, eat more protein like chicken, turkey etc and stay away from sweets, cakes and crisps.

Weights at the gym is good, it seems to make you loose weight faster and builds strength too.

A stone in a month? Or 3 months? My DH has lost 1.5 stone in 8 weeks doing keto, max 20g carbs per day.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 29/08/2024 08:00

I'd say 4 months is doable without going crazy.

1stone in 3 months, not a stone each month.

Easily, that's a pound a week which if I was at slimming world etc would be a pretty poor weight loss.

Liv999 · 29/08/2024 08:11

A stone in 3 months is very doable, usually takes me about 8 weeks to lose a stone

Planesmistakenforstars · 29/08/2024 08:19

For your current weight and height definitely doable, but depends on how willing you are to stick to things. Cut right down on alcohol and sugar, lift weights, intermittent fasting, low carb. Whether you do intermittent fasting or not, cutting out the evening snacking will help a lot. You know that though, and if it was easy you would have already done it!

A stone in 3 months is about a pound a week so fairly sensible

ruffler45 · 29/08/2024 08:21

Work out pretty accurately what you are eating now "calorie wise" dont guess.

A biscuit or two here and a snack or glass of wine there can easily increase your intake by 10%.
Aim for reducing your intake by at least 500 calories a day x 7 days, 3500 calories is reckoned to equal 1 lb in body fat. Should easily manage a stone in 3 months. Not convinced about fasting or huge reductions in calories a day, dont think the body can adjust to that easily.

olympicsrock · 29/08/2024 08:23

You are bang in the middle of the healthy BMI range now with a BMI of 22. Give your head a wobble perhaps and accept that you have a healthy body already.

Beautiful3 · 29/08/2024 08:24

Cut out alcohol and junk food. Start a calorie controlled diet and incorporate 10,000 steps a day.

Killerqueenie · 29/08/2024 08:35

I don't recommend cutting out carbs like another poster mentioned. You need carbs. Look at your calorie intake vs. output and adjust accordingly. If you restrict yourself of things you enjoy, then you will end up binging.

Ansjovis · 29/08/2024 08:39

Definitely doable. I lost 3 stone at a steady rate of 1-2 pounds per week. It did not require me to starve myself or cut out any major food groups and two years later I have kept it off.

However, in my view it must start from a full and honest documentation of your food habits. This includes accurate measurement of portion sizes, which can be difficult to face up to. Once you have this accurate view you can make some changes, but I would recommend doing so slowly so that you have time to adjust. Big bang approaches may feel as if you're committing more to it but you run the risk of finding it harder psychologically than if you made the changes gradually.

I do know this but I don't carry weight well.
My height and weight I need a size 12, other people need an 8! I know it's not all about sizes of clothes but just an example that the 10 stone doesn't sit well on me and I need to be closer to 9 for things to fit well and look better.

I also know I need to tone up!

I think some of my issue is I eat bits and pieces whilst cooking so although my portion is ok I've already had a few bits which will add up.

I also don't want to continue to put on weight and get in to an unhealthy pattern.

We don't eat ready meals and cook most meals from scratch but it's very easy to tip in that extra bit of olive oil!

Taking stock of what we eat is a good idea

Imalongtimepostingmum · 29/08/2024 08:57

Yes of course! I lost 8lbs in a month earlier in the summer.

I would absolutely have been able to keep going for another month. Once you get in the habit (usually the end of week two for me) it's easy.

I just do 1200 cals, 3xweights and a shed load of walking (at 5am if necessary).
I'm menopausal, on HRT.

Imalongtimepostingmum · 29/08/2024 08:58

FWIW I don't eat big meals with the family and I'd rather eat all my calories earlier in the day /grazing.

I eat a lot of 0% Fage Greek yoghurt, I don't count veg/salad in my calorie count.
