Only since menopause have I put on some weight. I'm not huge but bigger than I used to be and I don't like it!! Is it easy to lose a stone in a month and what's the best way!

Thanks

I was going to post yes absolutely but then I saw your height and weight. A stone would be a lot of weight loss, I can't imagine that you are overeating much at all. Maybe aim for 7lbs and see how you go? I can't imagine you are anything but slim already.

Plumbathread · 29/08/2024 09:09

Yes it is possible. I have done it and I hope to lose a stone more by Christmas.

Similar to you I piled on the pounds with the onset of peri. I was constantly snacking. I am still within the healthy range but I don’t like it. It just isn’t the me I am used to.

I haven’t made any changes to the things I eat or drink. I still drink alcohol, for example. But I stopped the snacking and the extra fat has fallen off.

You are bang in the middle of the healthy BMI range now with a BMI of 22. Give your head a wobble perhaps and accept that you have a healthy body already.

But you can feel like you are carrying too much weight even in a healthy bmi….I’m 5ft 6…..I could weigh up to 11st 2lb and still be a healthy bmi....but I know if I did I would feel unhealthy …….I felt unhealthy and lethargic at 10.5 stone….l weigh 9st now …..that is a good weight for me….where I feel at my healthiest and energetic ….I’m guessing it’s the same for OP …..,if you can reach your optimum weight where you feel at your healthiest then why not?

I'm like you, around 5'8" but at 10 st 7lb I was in a size 14. I have shifted a stone, finally - menopause has made it harder. Took about 10 weeks.
I do 14:10 fasting- very doable for me, just cuts out evening snacks and I seem to be less hungry now so snack less during the day. I tracked my calories for weeks to make sure I was in a deficit.
I also walk 10,000 steps, usually more each day. Gym classes, including kettlebell and tone up classes with weights, 4 times a week.
I am now finding size 12 a bit roomy and I am definitely more toned.

pambeesleyhalpert · 29/08/2024 09:41

I lost a stone in 8 weeks with SW x

Ames74 · 29/08/2024 09:41

I'm the same OP - BMI of 22 but would really like to lose a stone. It's crept on over the last 5 years. I think I could probably do it by cutting out snacks and alcohol and moving more. Somehow keep putting it off though. Good luck!

CleoinStTropez · 29/08/2024 09:42

I am doing the same. I’m a bit over 5ft9 and have always been around 9 stone ish, give or take a few pounds. Within 2 weeks my jeans went from being a bit tight to not fitting, not sure what suddenly happened but I had a shock to see I weighed 10 stone 1pound!

I’ve been on a diet for the last 2 weeks, weighing my food and calorie counting everything, I’m already quite active but have added more weights into my routine. I’ve lost 3lbs so far and I’m hoping for a 1lb a week weight loss to get me back to 9 stone for Christmas. I think it is doable but in the scheme of things it’s not much to lose so it’s not quick! I am just aiming to be in a deficit of 500 calories or more a day. I don’t drink anyway but have cut out anything processed (too much mindless cookie snacking in the evening!) focusing on protein and good fats.

good luck!

CheekySwan · 29/08/2024 09:45

take measurements, don't go off the scale, eat a calorie deficit, higher in protein, get in 10000 steps, up water intake to 3ltrs a day, measure in cms

OnarealhorseIride · 29/08/2024 09:48

I would say max loss is 2 pounds a week. Just reduce portion size and zero snacking or alcohol.

ChAmpagnesupernissancorsa · 29/08/2024 09:58

This was me. Always been 9 stone then menopause came and suddenly I was 10!
Already very active, run about 30-40 miles a week with weights 4 times a week so I’ve had to do it with diet. I initially did high protein low carb but I felt exhausted at the 2 week mark so now I have added in carbs again ( but not as much as I previously ate) but I’m keeping to low/ no UPF . Half a stone down in 8 weeks.

I think some of my issue is I eat bits and pieces whilst cooking so although my portion is ok I've already had a few bits which will add up.

I also don't want to continue to put on weight and get in to an unhealthy pattern.

We don't eat ready meals and cook most meals from scratch but it's very easy to tip in that extra bit of olive oil!

Taking stock of what we eat is a good idea

With the oil, I now decant to a spray bottle, I use very little now.

Even when making a curry, I soften the onions in water first before caramelising with a spray or 5 of oil, just enough that they darken and dont stick to the pan

teacoffeeorpassthegin · 31/08/2024 14:00

@suki1964 good idea regarding the oil.

I'm back at work Monday and it'll be easier then I'm just cutting out sweet stuff until then! I've had a bowl of homemade soup for lunch and home made bread and two boiled eggs for breakfast. I had another bit of bread then as well which I know is daft 🤦🏼‍♀️. It's my usual Saturday morning breakfast!

I have been on a 4 mile dog walk though!!

I do recognise I need to be more disciplined, years of never having to worry about my wait. Bloody menopause

I stopped drinking (and started eating more cake instead). I lost a stone in 3 months and have kept it off for a year now. I don’t do any exercise, but I am very active, doing farm chores, running after children and animals, etc, but I don’t do any formal exercise. Stop drinking and eat decent healthy meals and I imagine you’ll notice a huge difference.

I haven't had a drink in a week and am not planning on drinking again any time soon. Not that I was drinking lots but I know it's wasted calories!!

My meals are healthy but at work there is a tendency for biscuits to come out and I used to avoid but haven't the past year. I will now be avoiding and reducing my portion sizes. I will see what happens!

This has been my undoing of late. I work in a restaurant/coffee shop and OMG - Cake central and usually I keep away , but Ive not been too well of late and am finding Im flagging with about an hour still to go and I ve been beginning to reach for the treat. Now coffee shop tray bakes are HUGE and Im finding opps, that one has just been inhaled and I never noticed the going of it. Then of course Im not really hungry for my dinner when I get home so eat very little and bam, Im back to snacking in the evening

So starting back today Im taking with me to work a couple of baby bells for my flagging moment - if it comes. These dont trigger my sweet tooth and they give me a slow release of energy and wont leave me feeling bloated and uncomfortable . Im not a huge fan of them tbh but they are portable and easy grabbed . If I worked in an office environment Id take a wee tub with cubed cheese and grapes an nuts perhaps.

Once I take my eye off the ball and the unplanned treats come in, the weight creeps on - actually it creeps off and gallops back on. Not saying I dont have treats, I do, but they are planned in and around my meals to balance rather then to mindlessly add

I've lost about 4lbs in as many weeks. Roughly doing somewhere between 16/8 and 14/10. I used to do that before it was a thing back in my 20s and I think that it contributes to being slimmer. Also cut portion sizes and chocolate, but I don't find I want the chocolate so much. Fruit for breakfast, waiting until I'm really hungry before I eat it, sandwich for lunch and another for a snack if I'm really hungry later. Dinner of mostly veg, I'm not that hungry if I've eaten the second sandwich so it's just veg if I've done that.

I lost quite a bit following the low carb boot camp on here a few years ago but I found it quite restrictive as I don't really like eating much meat, I like carby fruit and veg, and although I was slimmer I didn't feel as well as I normally do when I'm slimmer and fitter.

It only makes you slimmer if you consume fewer calories during the non-fast period than you did previously over the full 24 hours.

Back in the 1990s I effectively followed the 16/8 diet for years while working away from home and living in hotels. I got to be the heaviest I have ever been, before or since, just eating lunch and dinner with no snacking at all.

invisiblecat · 01/09/2024 11:57

Around a pound a week is easily do-able, yes. Reducing carbs, alcohol and sugary stuff, eating more veg and drinking more water is the way to go.

Absolutely agree. How it helps me is that I'm eating less by not eating until I'm really hungry, so it has kind of reset my sense of what hunger really is. Probably doing something with my blood sugar, I don't know.

Iloveeverycat · 01/09/2024 12:06

Shouldn't be a problem just cut out chocolate crisps sugar cakes biscuits butter don't snack between meals. Don't be strict at the weekend then it will give you something to look forward to. Switch to low fat milk.
