Help me with my bedroom!

Please help me with my room- I have no vision and don't know what to do with it!

It's quite big, just had it painted a deep dark blue which I do love.

We need a new bed (super king) at some point but no idea what colour/style to get. Maybe grey? Will also need new bedside tables to match. There's nothing wrong with our current bed at all but it doesn't 'go' in this room so will move it into the spare room.

Will also need new bedding and curtains too. Just have a plain white blackout blind at the moment. But no idea what colours will go with the blue.

Any ideas would be so appreciated, thank you!

Oh and need to get an electrician to change the light, it's horrible, like a dentist's waiting room! So need a light fitting too.

I think dark blue is quite hard to style out, especially in a more modern home. Golds and yellows and warm woods go best with that shade of blue. I definitely wouldn't get a grey bed. Look on pinterest for navy blue bedroom ideas. Here's some ideas I found in a quick search.

GenAvocadoOnToast has posted some great pictures for inspiration.
I thought that the walls are crying out for pictures or a big mirror or something, and you could go for quite an opulent style with that background.

Thank you. It's a new build so doesn't have much character. Not sure I could go for gold!

I didn't want to do the ceiling too cos it's a low ceiling.

@Fortesque hence why I'm asking for help :)

I agree with previous posters that the blue is very dominant and rather cold. Definitely don't buy a grey bed -- you need to warm the room up, not chill it further. You need texture. I don't think white is the way to go, either, or it risks looking like a nautical-themed seaside BnB. I agree with a pp that warm woods and golds would work. This is more mustard, but you see the effect.

White works but you'll need a white metal frame bed and yellow ochre or green colour bedding to break up the blue.

Bringbackthedodo · 28/08/2024 20:10

Or go with this and keep it dark.

I personally would:
White bed frame
Dusky pink or mink soft furnishings or something with white and mink/pink in it. Have some pictures on the wall to draw it all together (the white, blue and mink/pink). I wouldn't put a rug on the carpet.

Barberries · 28/08/2024 20:57

Oh I like the pinks and minks idea. Maybe mustard too.

I do like the blue, I've always wanted a darker bedroom, it's just hard knowing where to go next!

I definitely don't want it to look nautical in all blues and whites as a pp said.

Not mustard AND pinks. One or the other!

I think the mustard colours will be lovely, or oranges might also work. Definitely a warm wooden colour for the bed I think would be nice - a beech colour or oak or even pine.

I think you need some big artwork over the bed and definitely need curtains, and preferably something to break up the right hand wall. I really like the colour but if you look at all the rooms pictured they all break up the colour so it's not a big expanse.

This is nice ☺️

I wouldn’t go for white bed, also get rid of the white drawers as it’s too cold with the blue. It needs a big statement bed, one with a tall upholstered headboard.

and I would either embrace the dark and moody. Either with lots of shades of blue and teal (def not a grey bed) or still keep with the dark but contrast it with pink and gold or pink and floral.

definitely needs some big artwork on the walls and could you have some coving put up? That would give more of a finish and make it feel less boxy.

We have a very dark blue feature wall in our bedroom. The other walls were originally painted grey but it didn't work. I repainted them last year with a very pale blue from crown... Can't remember what it was called exactly though. I'll see if I can find a picture.

Our room had a picture rail already there so we kept the above white and it really helps to lift the ceiling. Gold is the perfect accent colour for navy blue imo

Edited

If I had the right type of property for it, like a cottage or Victorian, I’d love a moody, dark but opulent living room or bedroom styled like the first pic. With lots of Japanese prints. I live in a very modern block of flats though so I’ve gone for sage greens, terracotta and warm wood which will have to do.

Seren78 · 28/08/2024 21:21

I see that blue with wooden flooring, not sure re carpet, lovely big room.

Barberries · 28/08/2024 21:46

Coving might be a good idea! I do like panelling.

Looking at wall art now.

I love the colour but please, please, please paint the ceiling in the same shade. It will look 1000x more put together, I promise! I know you say the ceiling is low, but honestly when you are using deep, dark colours you need to completely lean into it or the finished effect is neither one thing or the other.

Ideally you'd paint the woodwork too, although it can look awkward to only have one side of the door painted.

Woofwoofwoofgoesthewolfhound · 28/08/2024 21:54

And no coving, shudder 😀

MaidOfSteel · 28/08/2024 21:55

I think it would look great if you went full on opulent. Maybe use peacock colours for bedding or curtains, and definitely some gold touches like picture frames, lighting etc.

I didn’t want to say this but I agree. At the very least I think the doors need to be painted, perhaps with a complementary shade of blue. Bright white against dark blue doesn’t work IMO.
