Oh and finding the electric cable for my heated faux fur throw which dh bought me for Christmas and is the most wondrous thing I have ever owned.

Trumptonagain · 28/08/2024 11:13

I don't like the darker evenings setting in but over the last year or so shops have had some nice autumn bits in so I've gone with it to try and brighten the main room up a bit.
I fetch out the autumn bits and pieces, a mat with pumkins on, change cushion covers, a few ceramic pumpkins/autumn bits on the dresser/counter top, battery operated lighting and change up candle scents for more autumn fragrances.

I will be giving my pretty ancient sheepskin house boots a much needed machine wash. Renovated them last year with new insoles - £15.

And - ‘Season of mists and mellow soupfulness….’ contemplating all the lovely thick (and cheap!) main meal soups I’ll be making - with largely seasonal, U.K. grown veg - plus lentils, pearl barley, etc.

Throws stay out all year here, and I’m in SW London - there have been plenty of chilly evenings here, supposedly summer or not.

The fairy lights that were draped round a huge house plant at least 3 Christmases ago, will soon be switched on again.

Lamplight, candlelight and firelight
I put woollen throws over the arms of chairs so people can curl up under a blanket while reading or watching TV if they want.
Order a stack of good books from Amazon.
Autumn food. Apple and blackberry crumbles, root veg spiced soups.
Switch from citrussy and floral shower and bath products to spicy ones. I'm ditching Neal's Yard Orange and Geranium for Origins Ginger Souffle.
Get out my cashmere and merino sweaters and scarves, sheepskin slippers and fleecy dressing gown.

GoTigers · 28/08/2024 11:25

Enjoy the last of the sunshine and the leaves turning red and gold. Enjoy the smell of mulching leaves.
Look forward to Bonfire Night.

Ignore the advance of Christmas.

I love Autumn and would enjoy the depths of Winter more if we could eradicate Christmas.

Love the shower gel tip, great idea!

The other thing I do is leave a basket of fleecy blankets by the back door. When DC have friends over, they light the firepit, wrap themselves in blankets and sit around chatting under starlight. It makes me happy just seeing them out there.

theres a great thread for this in the Christmas corner of the board

I make my fireplace 'cosy', with fairylights, seasonal candles (pumpkin spice flavour), and an autumn garland.
I bought some new autumnal cushions from Dunelm for the lounge
New phone wallpaper with an autumn theme
I treated myself to some new uggs :) the Goldenstar ones - sooo comfy!!
Ordered some new autumn/winter socks (fairisle style)
Got out my cosy longsleeve pyjama set
Put away all of my summer clothes until next year
Got out my 'autumn/winter' Emma Bridgewater mugs
Will start making more cosy autumn puddings - lots of crumbles!
Bought some hot chocolate, and will order some of the seasonal coffee pods from Nespresso so the kitchen smells delicious!
New soaps for the bathrooms - all pumpkin flavor from TK maxx😅

ginandheels · 28/08/2024 12:13

Great list @LetsGoDoDoDo

@Adatewithmyself - can recommend Wintering by Katherine May.

With a hot choc? All snuggly wuggly with ethnically sourced bog roll?

I change my purse and phone case to wine red and put the summer ones away.

I put away summer nighties and pjs, and get out the Ugg inside boots, the HeatTech socks and the thicker jumpers.

I get out my massive sheepskin coat - no one will ever see what I wear for the following six months as I am always buried under that.

Must get it cleaned this year actually....

Oh, I had a beautiful sheepskin 3/4 length coat back in the late 80s
( when winters were snowy & very
cold )

Then I got pregnant with DS and somehow developed the shoulders of a Russian weightlifter and couldn’t get it on past my elbows! Heartbroken💔
Despite going back to pre-pregnancy size, the coat never fitted me again.
I still have enormous shoulders for someone 5ft tall🤷‍♀️

afaloren · 28/08/2024 13:16

Cosy blankets. Log burner lit. Scented candles from Homesense. Hot chocolate. I love it!

IggyAce · 28/08/2024 13:26

Get the wool throw out, I got a gorgeous one a few years ago from National trust shop.
Candles.
Change my coffee table centre display.
Snuddies come out.
Get my Nordic socks out.
Sort out a reading list, I never buy books I borrow from the library so need to request them.
Stock up on hot chocolate and marshmallows.

@IggyAce my favourite wool throw is from a National Trust shop - they do gorgeous ones at a fraction of the price of other 100% wool throws. I might need another one.

Desperately seeking (and not finding) smart, non clonky waterproof ankle boots (have huge sheepskin dubarry's)
Ditto waterproof, not too clonky trainers for wet walks in the park.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 28/08/2024 14:13

I bought some 'autumnal' curtains (from Dunelm) with woodland patterns on in a dark green, they change the look of the whole room when they're up. I also go out foraging (well, blackberry and sloe picking really) and while I'm out I pick up stems and stalks of things going to seed and nice decorative branches, then put it all in a vase and display it.

Also smells, anything smoky makes the place smell autumnal.

Not sure if they meet the need but absolutely in love with my Chelsea tretons

Magnolia1234 · 28/08/2024 14:18
