Why do so many people seem to have Covid (and it’s summer?)

I’m taken aback how many people I know who have Covid. Why is that? I assumed it was typically a winter illness.

also, I’m going away on a course next week and I’m worried about getting it and not being able to go.

if you have had it recently, what were your symptoms?

I am surprised people even test. I didn't even realise you could still get tests for it.

Weightedvest · 26/08/2024 19:52

You can and people do

But I guess it’s not really about it being Covid that is something you have to follow guidelines over etc - it’s more that it’s like shit flu

My sister has it, thanks she caught it from her husband. She tested because she works with someone in ill health.
She feels horrendous.

Sorry, don't know why loads have it though.

novalee · 26/08/2024 19:54

You can still buy tests at boots and savers but the ones I’ve seen are pretty pricey, I do know of people who will test if they are particularly ill

Jeezitneverends · 26/08/2024 19:55

for the same reason as people used to just get a cold, it’s a viral infection but people are still obsessed with finding out what variety it is.

If you have a cough/cold/generally feeling crap, is it ok to go in amongst other people as long as it isn’t Covid?

BeaRF75 · 26/08/2024 19:58

People only know if they're foolish enough to test, so don't test!
But summer colds are pretty common. If you get a bit snuffly, OP, you'll just have to push through.... you'll be fine.

Weightedvest · 26/08/2024 20:01

But it’s not about whether it is or isn’t ‘Covid.’ The label or type of virus isn’t important. I’m just saying there seems to be a big surge currently, in the summer where those types of viruses are usually minimal. Hence wanting to understand why.

And, people I know who have it appear to feel awful!

A lot of people test because they come into close contact with vulnerable people, such as elderly/disabled family, or working in hospitals/care homes, etc. No they don't have to test, but a lot of people feel some sense of responsibility not to pass on diseases to other vulnerable people, some of whom may die from it! In the same way, they'd try not to get into close contact if they had contracted E-coli or norovirus!

As for why it's everywhere at the moment, that's simply what easily transmitted diseases do. They grow exponentially. The more people who contract it, the more those spread it to others. We seem to be in a "wave" of it this Summer. Maybe because of the crap weather and people doing more indoor types of events/attractions, which are all busier due to the school holidays. Likewise lots of people travelling in cramped, close contact conditions in ships, planes, airports, etc., where keeping distance is impossible so people with a transmittable disease will be transmitting it!

I felt really rotten and was just pushing on telling myself it was a bad cold until i basically hit a wall. Still had tests left so did one and it was + I worked from home as some of my colleagues have very ill family members etc. I felt way worse than the first time I got it when it was really mild. I felt so dreadful one morning this time I just knew it was more than a cold.

ClemmyTine · 26/08/2024 20:09

Tests can be bought from Sainsbury's.

I wouldn't test if I thought I'd got it.

I never used to get ill, coughs, colds etc until i got COVID in 2021. I've had lots of colds, flu type bugs since then. I think the initial COVID has left me weaker. So it probably has to anyone else, hence lots of it about.

MuchasSmoochas · 26/08/2024 20:12

It’s everywhere at the mo. I had it 2 weeks ago, only tested as was at DMs and she didn’t want it. Felt awful for 36 hours then absolutely fine.

sleepyscientist · 26/08/2024 20:12

Usually pick up a cold once or twice a year if COVID mutating like rhinovirus it makes sense to get COVID at similar intervals. We've stopped testing but get a headache with COVID don't with a common cold.

I am surprised you don't realise that vulnerable people and those who come in contact with them are still testing.

It may come as a surprise, but you can get flu in summer too.

Do you think it would be foolish of me to test if I suspected I had covid before visiting my vulnerable relatives?

ManchesterLu · 26/08/2024 20:15

Same reason everyone gets it in freshers week at uni. Because people are travelling all over the world/country on their holidays, catching it, and bringing different strains back to different places.

Also, this year is the first since everything kicked off with it where people have truly given up on any preventative measures, so the help that brought is no longer happening.

Grateeggspectations · 26/08/2024 20:16

Two of my kids had it a couple of weeks ago. They tested because they wanted to go to visit a family member in hospital. They were really poorly this time.

DH’s uncle died of Covid last week. If only more people were ‘foolish’ enough to test, he’d still be here now. Instead they think “Fuck it, it’s only a cold. I’ll go and visit a vulnerable old man”.

Countrydiary · 26/08/2024 20:18

People test because of vulnerable people, who could still very well end up in hospital with Covid in a way they wouldn’t with a cold.

I think people are testing more again because the new variants make you feel really ill and Covid is some explanation for that. I had it June and thought it would be super mild like a cold but it was much more like real flu where you can’t get out of bed.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 26/08/2024 20:27

You know you
dont get flus/colds and Covid because of cold weather right?

summer makes sense it would be spread with loads of people travelling for holidays, loads of events like music festivals where people are crowded together

Motheranddaughter · 26/08/2024 20:33

No way am I testing
Just get on with it ,and if you are ill stay home

You shouldn't be visiting vulnerable people with cold either it can turn into pneumonia

I'm 8 days out from a positive test. This felt more like the flu, body aches, runny nose, chills and fever. I'm in the coughing phase now and so very tired.
