Ideas for nice gifts for my niece who is heading off to university.
Nothing pricey maybe about £25.

She's prob already getting everything she needs at this stage. How about an Amazon or deliveroo voucher?

Darkfire · 26/08/2024 09:59

Supermarket voucher

some nice body lotion/make up remover things so she doesnt have to buy them herself
some nice coffee
i also suggest the Nosh cook book

My DC’s godmother got him a bucket she filled with cleaning supplies and useful extras - hangover cures, multi vitamins, stain remover pen, £5 voucher for the coffee shop nearest his accommodation (she looked it up on Google Maps, bless her!)
He was really touched!

Hedgerow2 · 26/08/2024 10:03

£25 cash in a card. Or a coffee shop/supermarket voucher.

viques · 26/08/2024 10:05

If she is in halls/ accomodation where utilities are included then a heated throw, they have come down a lot in price and if you upped your budget slightly you could get one that isn’t going to burst into flames. A supermarket voucher is also a good idea, but check that there is one near her university. I would also try to buy in lower denominations.

I bought one of my nieces a popcorn maker, it didn’t last long but was a great ice breaker.

mamapants · 26/08/2024 10:06

Thanks for suggestions so far.
She's a good cook already and probably would look up recipes online. She doesn't drink coffee. And not really a body lotion person.
Agree no point getting her an 'essential' item as she already has those sorted and ready. Just wanted something nice. Like the idea of vouchers for local cafes etc, that kind of thing could work.

I know I could give her money and will be giving her some money but possibly this gift also. Otherwise more money I guess as can't go wrong with cash for teenagers.

nice biscuits
nice unusual cooking equipment, does she drink any type of tea?
a wooly hat

HelenWheels · 26/08/2024 10:10

pretty stationery

Tereseta · 26/08/2024 10:11

Wetherspoons vouchers!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/08/2024 10:13

My favourite present for university was a little radio. My home was never quiet, so liked having some background noise when in my room.

She'll use her phone for everything, but maybe a little Bluetooth speaker? It could be used for parties as well especially if not too expensive.

What I actually liked most was getting post/hearing from different people, so if you could sent her a postcard or little note in a months or six weeks or so I bet she'd like it.

Tereseta · 26/08/2024 10:15

Though the heated throw is a great shout. Or maybe a kitchen appliance like a air fryer/toastie waffle maker?
The most usefull thing I had at uni was extra storage and a over the door photo holder.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 26/08/2024 10:17

Is she self-catering? I think a set of spices and herbs is a lovely present, as they are expensive to go out and buy for yourself and will last a while.

Wetherspoons vouchers!

I second this. 2 cheap hot meals for her.

Chewbecca · 26/08/2024 10:37

A lot of halls are really, really hot so I wouldn't go for a heated throw until you know it's cold!

I second / third / fourth the coffee shop / spoons voucher.

StormingNorman · 26/08/2024 10:43

My mum took me to do a big shop before university and it was the best thing. Perhaps you could get her a few bits like that - a few of her favourite biscuits and snacks mixed in with some pasta, pesto and super noodles. And a bottle of wine (not too good but drinkable) to help with the inevitable settling in party.

Carolinarua24 · 26/08/2024 10:45

Self care kit - my DD had fresher’s flu the first term and medication was expensive where she went to uni so Lemsip, cough sweets, fluffy blanket, herbal tea.

Amazon voucher

Wetherspoons voucher

Greggs voucher

Quitelikeacatslife · 26/08/2024 10:51

Depends if she has all the basics, blender to make soup maybe with cookbook. nice cocktail set with bottle of vodka , On my DD wish list, a plug in diffuser as halls can smell (no candles allowed) , an electric blanket, over door hangers , mattress topper as beds aren't comfy , soft fleece blanket. Maybe stock cupboard set nice sauces like soy, hosin, teriyaki, noodles, pesto, pasta, harrisa , spices, things that will last and start off an easy meal.

Darkfire · 26/08/2024 10:54

If you want little gifts then something like Dobble and Uno are good - they both got plenty of play by DD and her friends.

crumblingschools · 26/08/2024 10:57

Rather than a heated throw I would get a fan!

Is there a family pet? A photo cushion of said pet usually goes down well

AngelicaSchuyler444 · 26/08/2024 10:59

My DD got a door stop from my SIL (among other bits) which was great.
It means she can prop open her bedroom door which helps a lot with sociability, especially at the beginning of term when they're all getting to know each other.

DoopSnoggySnogg · 26/08/2024 11:00

A decent quality, large Thermos type flask in her favourite colour. When I was in halls I used to make up a massive flask of tea to have at my desk all day long without having to keep making it. Bliss. Mine wasn’t cool though, it was my gran’s old tartan one 😄

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 26/08/2024 11:01

I got DD this for her first week-a little daily gift.
