Are posters on walls a thing of the past

As a teenager my bedroom wall was covered in posters, is this still a thing now with teenagers? I don’t know many teenagers myself but I’m wondering whether the fact they look at phones rather than read magazines, where would they get posters from.

I also wonder whether teenagers still read books or whether phones have taken over this as well.

I was never allowed to put up posters because my Mum said it would damage the paint but I did have them on my wardrobe door, mostly from Kerrang or Smash Hits magazines. You know, I had never thought kids wouldn’t have those posters, probably ever again.

My DC had the bought and framed kind, mostly film posters.

VashtaNerada · 26/08/2024 06:03

My teen doesn’t have posters Sad I think it’s quite unusual nowadays because teens no longer read magazines in the same way we did. It would probably be quite a cool ‘retro’ thing to do nowadays but only for the really edgy alternative kids.

ShakeUpYourTiredEyes · 26/08/2024 06:10

My son, not quite a teen yet but about to go to high school buys posters from hmv now and then or from gigs we take him to so like nice good quality not pulled from a magazine.
He loves them but they have to be cool and relevant so will often get changed e.g. his favourite computer game, band, TV show all of which change monthly

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 26/08/2024 07:43

My teen DC have posters - some freebies from inside albums (sorry, vinyls Grin) and some bought from Etsy so no carefully prising the staples out like we had to! They also read and buy physical books, rather than read ebooks. Student DD's flatmates also have posters (and Polaroids and fairy lights) decorating their rooms.

TheChosenTwo · 26/08/2024 07:46

All 3 of my dc have posters! But ones bought online. Youngest has some Harry Potter ones on the back of his door and some smaller framed ones on his shelves (more like prints though I guess), the middle one has some Steven Rhodes posters on her walls and the other has arty ones on her wardrobe.
No one here has had a magazine in years.
2 of them still read books though!

ShiftySquirrel · 26/08/2024 07:51

Neither of mine have posters up - no teen magazines anymore and they'd rather spend the money on other things.

One of mine is a huge reader and likes computer games, the other likes crafting and games on her phone.

I used to have Blur on my wall. Happy days!

treehousethunderstorm · 26/08/2024 07:52

My daughter has a huge one, the local cinema sells off the movie posters a couple of times a year for 20p

DustyLee123 · 26/08/2024 07:53

No, my teen doesn’t have posters, in fact this one never has had them.
And my kids all read paper books, no Kindles.

CaptainCallisto · 26/08/2024 07:58

Both mine have posters, but like pp we've bought them at places like HMV or at ComiCon. DS1 has some quite a lot, DS2 has fewer actual posters now (though his room used to be wall to wall Pokémon posters!) but still has lots of postcard sized pictures from museums/game inserts/places we've visited.

CaptainCallisto · 26/08/2024 07:59

Oh, they're also both voracious readers. Mostly still proper paper books, but some Kindle for DS1.

SparkyBlue · 26/08/2024 08:12

My DD has loads of posters on her walls and also has the bedroom door fully decorated

Thingsthatgo · 26/08/2024 08:12

My DS doesn't have posters, but he has some pictures he likes on his walls in cheap ikea frames.
He reads books all the time - we live 5 minutes from the library, so he just reserved the books he wants on his library app, and picks them up when they are ready to collect.

Iamthemoom · 26/08/2024 08:18

DD 16 has posters up but mostly in frames and album covers too. And in answer to your second part we just had to redo her room as there weren't enough book shelves! She reads voraciously, mostly hard copy, kindle at night and wants to keep ALL the books!

Vettrianofan · 26/08/2024 08:20

My primary aged DSs have posters on their walls. My teenage DSs also have posters on their walls. Iron Maiden (from a gig) and a hobby they're into.

WaveAcrossTheBay · 26/08/2024 08:47

DC1 does have posters, but they’re from anime shows, not bands or actors like I had. She buys them at Anime/ Comic Cons or in shops.
DC2 is 9 and has cat pictures that are mostly from previous years calendars and postcards from places we visit.

What I find surprising is that, as a teenager, my family had no choice but to listen to my music played loudly on tape and then cd in my room despite asking me to turn it down, but DC1 listens to music only on her phone through headphones so I don’t hear it.

Clingfilm · 26/08/2024 08:49

Gosh, yes, magazine posters RIP!

Just the other day I saw two teenage girls walking back from town carrying rolled up posters, presumably from HMV. They were dressed 'alternatively', one had a slipknot top on.

And I'm reminded of going on a local walk at Xmas to see the lights and seeing inside one bedroom with the curtains open and it was plastered in 'metal' posters, I thought how unusual that is these days.

JaninaDuszejko · 26/08/2024 09:06

My three have things on the walls, in fact my youngest has an entire wall corked in his bedroom because he puts so many things on the walls and I wanted it contained. He even has a Beano poster from the comic, complete with staple holes.

All three read books and the 'playroom' has a wall of books and the other walls have posters bought from HMV.

AllotmentTime · 26/08/2024 09:21

Mine have 'posters" from calendars! They get a calendar each year and usually cut out a few pictures to keep.

Sedgwick · 26/08/2024 09:27

My DD 17 has. An arty set of 4 from Etsy (architectural/futuristic), a Dune poster from the cinema and a couple of freebie Marvel posters again from the cinema. She is also a voracious reader.

BabaYetu · 26/08/2024 09:32

Posters mostly from gigs or about movies they love. Smash Hits centrefolds of A-ha are a thing of the past though.

(Morten Harket is still gorgeous though)

MrsMcNallysMaureen · 26/08/2024 09:41

Both DDs (18 and 14) have posters covering their walls. Not from magazines. There are music posters, actors, TV, film, theatre. Both only read 'real' books even though they both have a kindle.

Saisong · 26/08/2024 09:49

My teen DD has her walls completely covered with band posters or her own art and crafts. Funnily enough most of the bands are my era - AC/DC, Guns'n'Roses, Ramones etc. She even has some on the ceiling. Her art is bloody amazing too (takes A'level art) much of it painted on old vinyl.

Her brother has a much smaller room, not much wall space but has sciency things up like periodic table or F1 cars also a Gorillaz poster.

Objectionhearsayspeculation · 26/08/2024 09:52

My teen makes her own using Shuffles, currently most of her bedroom is covered in them. She laminates the smaller ones and puts some sort of plastic stuff on the bigger ones. Currently seems to be a mix of Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo on 2 walls and Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper on the others.
Tween has posters from some Pokémon magazines and maps from Nat Geo Kids which come to think of it i don't know where it came from. She's trying to convince dd1 to make her some Pokemon shuffles but hasn't been too nice to her lately so that's not going well!

NowImNotDoingIt · 26/08/2024 09:52

Tween DD has posters and cards up on her walls. She hates reading though, always has. When she does read, she prefers paper books to a screen.
