End of summer rituals

It’s been a bit nippy today so got me thinking I should probably wash the summer bedding before the weather changes, also been eating in the garden most evenings (same reason), I should probably pencil in the seaside trip we’ve postponed the whole summer.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or rituals to wind down to autumn (like the opposite of spring cleaning? I suppose wiping down the garden furniture and putting it away should be on the list)?

As a reflection on how rubbish the weather has been this summer (and that we didn’t go abroad), I’ve just realised that the majority of my summer wardrobe is still lying in the “to be ironed” pile and has been all summer!
May as well not bother now 😂

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/08/2024 21:48

We've just got back from Egypt and it was 40 there so feels very autumnal here!
I've had the heating on for a couple of hours this evening.

TempANew · 25/08/2024 22:02

Nothing else to do but feel very cross that I’ve missed 20% off in store at The White Company! I was eyeing up a cosy candle fragrance

We didn't have a summer

Agreed. I'm still waiting.

AnyFucker · 25/08/2024 22:11

Have you lot not seen next week’s forecast ? ☀️

We always get another lovely couple f weeks when the kids go back to school. Don’t be so hasty 😊

Nubbled · 25/08/2024 22:11

I live on an island off the west coast of Scotland. We’ve had no summer this year 👀

@hattie43

Do you really throw out 'summer' scented toiletries? What a waste.

Maybe this year you could change this ritual and find a donation point for partly used cosmetics and toiletries that are offered to women in refuges.

It’s honestly never occurred to me that there are ‘summer scented’ toiletries!

And what was all that in the OP about summer bedding - unless she just meant lighter duvets?

In any case, it’s still summer here until the end of September as far as I’m concerned.

spikeandbuffy24 · 25/08/2024 22:40

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER for me it's

Swapping brushed cotton bedding for the lighter cotton bedding, putting the throws back on the sofa

Finishing up the Nivea sun shower gel and summer type perfumes and the lemon hand wash and citrus candles for more smoky, heavier warmer scents. I'm a scent addict though so I do get that's not standard!

I use a shower oil in winter and heavier moisturiser as my skin is drier as well

expiredplants · 25/08/2024 22:53

Panic buy school uniform if needed, other than that absolutely nothing. Autumn is my least favourite season by far, I try and ignore it and leap directly from summer to winter. Also I’m usually wearing shorts and sandals well into October 😂

I'm always bemused by how much stuff people have that is winter specific that it constitutes an entire wardrobe that is packed away for a few weeks every year.

My winter clothing consists of some slightly thicker jumpers and a few more pairs of tights. What are all the extra bits of clothing people have?

I don't get this either! Unless you're a lifestyle influencer on Instagram, who needs to do this?

It's not a few weeks for me, it's usually May to September. Clothes that aren't worn for that period of time get dusty on the shoulders and creased if my wardrobe is cramped.

I just prefer to have my summer clothes hanging in a decent space, for me it makes finding clothes and getting dressed so much easier. I have a lot of linen items for summer and they hang better after ironing with less in my wardrobe.

I pack away several pairs of Wool trousers/thicker trousers. Down jackets and wool coats that take a lot of space. I have some cashmere sweaters that I fold and store to keep in good condition. Winter boots go into a container in a hallway cupboard so that my shoe cupboards just have summer sandals and trainers.

Sorry what??? Wash the summer bedding? You've had your bedding on since Springtime? No way! Shock

This is my absolutely favourite time of the year!

It's my birthday week, mornings and evenings are drawing in, I can light candles and smelly things, I can curl into a cardigan, the blinds are pulled down early, so it's really cosy.

I can watch the bats at dawn and dusk and keep normal awake hours, the change of colours on the trees is stunning. It's a bit fresher and crisper out.

It's the start of nature snuggling in, tucking up, getting ready to go WOW in the spring.

Somehow, the pressure is taken away.

Autumn is the best season.

Oh wow - I love this description! Only in England.,,

My DH really wants to move to the countryside after three decades in a city in the south east. I'm resistant, but reading this is helping me to see his point.

Exactly. Me and DH are off to the beach this week! Temps of 28C - 82F are predicted! 😎

reluctantbrit · 25/08/2024 23:08

Temperature forecast is still in the low to mid twenties here in London. I still need my T-shirts and maybe the skirts and sandals the next 2 weeks.

My wardrobe is big enough to hold everything from T-shirts and shorts to a winter coat. That one is washed after the last use and ready for whenever we get cold enough temperatures.

I don't change my curtains or bedding, I may get the blanket out when it gets cold, maybe around October?

The only thing is ordering some jumpers for DD as the ones from last year bobbled badly thanks to her bagpack.

And she needs new boots.

Same. And who has the storage space to put it all somewhere separate?!

We didn't have a summer

Still waiting for summer to start where I am in Scotland.

Edited to add: I've just skimmed quickly through this thread. Fucking hell - apart from a few others who're still waiting, you have no idea what a totally shit summer this has been in Scotland - definitely in my area. I've been wearing my big coat all summer, and wellies, and scarves! Not gloves, I'll give it that. Blanket on top of the duvet, fleecy pyjamas at night. The weather here has been terrible - every so often we get one day of sunshine to get our hopes up, then the next day it's pissing down again. And it's cold! I'm in my late 50s and this has got to be one of the worst summers I can remember.

Magnolia1234 · 25/08/2024 23:09

Swapping clothes. Boring, but nice for drawers and wardrobes to have space.

washing big items, so they can be line dried.

when it gets cooler potting up some autumn and winter flowers.

Someone else mentioned summer and winter curtains. What's all that about? I'm in Manchester and it's forecast to be mid 20s next week so still summer. I don't think I live in the same world as a lot of you.😄

Me too. It’s been Autumn since April.

SummerSplashing · 25/08/2024 23:13

Nothing to wind summer down as I leave it kicking & screaming continually enjoying any last minute sun/warm days!

I just find things drift out of use & gradually put them away when they've not been used for a while (like fans). But they only go into the spare room.

I'll be wearing my shorts for a bit yet, but I'll only put them in a different drawer, which I'll do once I'm wearing my leggings more often, don't own summer skirts or dresses.

I'll just get Autumn/Winter bits out as I need/want them. I LOVE Autumn.🍂 🍂🍂

shellyleppard · 25/08/2024 23:17

I wash the duvets/ winter blankets. Tidy the garden, cover the parasol, wash as much as I can while its dry weather

Time40 · 25/08/2024 23:17

No, stop it! Stop talking like this! Don't think about winter! It's still summer ... there is more summer to come! I'm going to the lido tomorrow. I'm definitely not thinking about the fact that one of lidos I go to is closing soon ... when it will still be summer (those mad lido people; what are they thinking?) Can you tell I'm not a fan of winter ...

Not here, but in my previous house, I had thin white wafty curtains/linen in the summer & velvety heavier curtains to keep the heat in & make it cosy. I liked swapping them over.

here I don't have any, anywhere. But will get some heavy ones this winter I think, then they'll definitely come down in spring for light summer ones or just revert back to nothing 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
