To say: M&S, it's not a "pesto wrap" without pesto!

I grabbed a mozzarella and pesto wrap from M&S yesterday as a little treat (normally I don't buy preprepared stiff as I'm on a budget). Was excited to have a mozzarella and pesto as an option that wasn't yet another "cover all bases" vegan option (I like vegan food, that is another post- I'm sure you all know what I mean).

Anyway, it turns out the "mozzarella and pesto wrap" doesn't actually contain pesto at all, but rather a gloopy, unappetising "basil mayonnaise" concoction. I was so disappointed! 😐😒 Or did I get this wrong? What would you expect from a "pesto and mozzarella wrap"?

Basil mayonnaise is not pesto. I'd have been annoyed too. There's something lovely about pure pesto in a sandwich. Love it

Shezlong · 25/08/2024 10:10

It's misleading at best. Yes it says basil mayo on the label but it also says pesto on the label too!

It also says vegetarian though. As traditional pesto is not vegetarian and it said with basil and mayo, it's fairly easy to tell what it was going to be.

@amoreoamicizia Forget all the people waffling about is it / isn't it vegetarian / vegan / whatever, and going on and on about the mayo and the cheese and God knows what. They are all missing the point.

Did it or did it not have pine nuts in it?

If not then it ain't pesto.

amoreoamicizia · 25/08/2024 10:34

There wasn't any pesto, pine nuts or not!

No it wasn't, because it said "pesto" when there wasn't any pesto.

If it doesn't contain pesto, it shouldn't say it does, whatever the small print says. It is misleading, I would be telling M&S this, and any other company labelling food as something which it actually isn't. They shouldn't be able to hide behind their small print.

^ This.

Sadly, the average MNer nowadays barrels in with their AIBU nitpicking mentality, can't read the question or generalise their thinking, focus in on their single takeaway issue and ta-da! your thread becomes fodder.

I'd just let it go now op. Like the disappointing sandwich. You can't change it, you just know never to try it again, "it" being making an aside.

PS I adore mozzarella and pesto and that concoction you were sold would disappoint.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 25/08/2024 10:45

I know which wrap you mean and I love it!🙈

TofuFighters · 25/08/2024 10:48

So you expected it to contain traditional pesto that wasn't vegetarian even though it is labelled vegetarian. I'd wouldn't. Their pesto was basil and mayo which is stated.

Are you going to contact M&S, maybe they'll change their labelling if you tell them you didn't understand.

She probably expected vegetarian pesto (with hard cheese) not basil mayo, which is nothing like pesto!

I find it absolutely flabbergasting that you're trying to lay the blame at my feet for not expecting basil mayonnaise in something labelled as "pesto".

In no way can basil and mayonnaise be construed as pesto, no matter how many sarcastic and rude comments you make.

I think you confused people with saying vegan. And really vegetarian didn't need mentioning .

Basically the m&s pesto and mozzarella wrap doesn't actually contain pesto but rather mayo/basil gloop.

Personally I can't stand pre made sandwiches/wraps they are always disappointing

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 25/08/2024 11:15

I can't stand pesto so thought this could be a wrap I'd try... but basil is vile too so I'll stick to egg mayo 😊

I agree. A lot of people aren’t going to read the small print when grabbing a sandwich

As I said I wasnt that bothered, I didnt wear a badge and have a certificate. A lot of 'veggies' are the same.

Also fine. But they weren't vegetarian either. If you and they aren't bothered, I wonder why they 'bother' to say they're vegetarian in the first place.

Because its just a short hand way of letting people know you dont eat meat. ie, Im looking for dishes that done#t have any chicken, beef, pork/ham or lamb in them.

I don't think it's a big deal, but it is your fault if you didn't read properly.

Take if you with the company then. I'm presuming the legal department knows that it can describe this as pesto as they wouldn't do it. If you don't complain though, nothing will change. Either that or try reading the label properly in future.

AtomicBlondeRose · 25/08/2024 11:55

So if I offer people salsa on their nachos but gloop on a load of tomato mayonnaise, everyone would be happy, right? Or give you mint flavoured mayo instead of mint sauce on your lamb? I agree it’s misleading. Pesto means pesto, a strong distinctive flavour and texture (veggie or not), not mayonnaise.

Lovelyview · 25/08/2024 12:04

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/08/2024 09:36

I think it's a rare vegetarian that is completely vegetarian. So many things use byproducts, or aren't veggie that you'd think. I had no idea figs weren't, or wine, or some sugar, or many other things. And accidental ingestion is a thing, unless you're finely going over everything and not eating any processed food at all.

A lot of vegetarians say they're vegetarian so they don't get served meat. They're not fussed if their wine has been filtered through isinglass.

Edited

If you gave no other information, they might be surprised.

In this case, it clearly stated what was in it so 🤷🏻‍♀️

PardontheFrench · 25/08/2024 12:53

This is actually my go-to lunch of choice in M&S I think it’s delicious and the pesto mayonnaise is really good.

gynaeissue · 25/08/2024 12:58

Yeah sorry OP I bloody love that basil mayo

harriettenightingale · 25/08/2024 13:01

Looking forward to trying it misses point of thread I do agree that the label isn't clear though, it looks like there should be Mozarella, pesto, and then the minor ingredients including the basil mayo.

Yes I agree, I'd have expected the basil mayo in addition to the pesto. I'd be going straight to customer services (next time I was passing ☺️)
