To say: M&S, it's not a "pesto wrap" without pesto!

I grabbed a mozzarella and pesto wrap from M&S yesterday as a little treat (normally I don't buy preprepared stiff as I'm on a budget). Was excited to have a mozzarella and pesto as an option that wasn't yet another "cover all bases" vegan option (I like vegan food, that is another post- I'm sure you all know what I mean).

Anyway, it turns out the "mozzarella and pesto wrap" doesn't actually contain pesto at all, but rather a gloopy, unappetising "basil mayonnaise" concoction. I was so disappointed! 😐😒 Or did I get this wrong? What would you expect from a "pesto and mozzarella wrap"?

Pesto-gate aside OP, I am with you on this. Agreed that mozzarella, pesto and tomato sandwich is a thing of joy and I would be disappointed too. And would expect better of M&S of all places!

CormorantStrikesBack · 25/08/2024 09:09

So really it should be a mozzarella and basil wrap and should be labelled accordingly

soupfiend · 25/08/2024 09:10

Changingplace · 25/08/2024 08:53

Was it labelled as vegan/vegetarian or did you just opt for a meat free option?

Are you misunderstanding the conversation?

OP is complaining that an option she bought (which is vegetarian rather than 'covering all bases' vegan (too much of this in shops these days), which said it had pesto in it, did not have pesto in it (vegetarian pesto)

So what relevance is it, what veggie label it had on it? It claims pesto, but no pesto was within the wrap.

OP I absolutely hate mayo on sandwiches, it was the death of the pre packed sandwich as far as Im concerned.

I know and love this wrap - it’s says clearly it contains basil mayo. The basil mayo will be a combination of a vegetarian pesto mixed with mayo. It’s really clear. The flavour is pesto, but it says it is a mayo.

It's all my fault @soupfiend I bloody love mayo.

OP was it not 'pesto' mixed with mayo?

All pesto debates aside, I actually just wanted to warn fellow veggies that this wrap is not that nice and definitely not worth the price tag (and I do like mayo, just not gloopy basil mayo). If it were made with pesto it would have been delicious. A local café near me used to make exactly that wrap (mozzarella, sun-dried tomato, spinach, pesto) but it closed during covid ☹️

I’m not a veggie but I love that combination. I’d of been devastated too op. It’s awful when you expect a treat and get meh at best.

Gosh this thread is frustrating
Nobody cares about the vegetarian or vegan merits
The wrap was pants.

Chewbecca · 25/08/2024 09:19

Mayo + mozzarella = bleurgh
Pesto + mozzarella = heavenly

This has been covered, vegetarian pesto is made with Italian hard cheese. That is how vegetarian pesto is commonly available in supermarkets. The point is that didn't contain pesto but "basil mayonnaise".

But if it the same one I'm thinking if, which a friend often has and I was with her when she bought it a couple of weeks ago, it clearly says 'with basil mayonnaise' on the front, right under 'mozzarella and pesto wrap'.

soupfiend · 25/08/2024 09:21

This thread is hard work but Im with you OP.

As an aside, when I was veggie, I didnt really care if cheese was 'vegetarian' or not. Or wine.

That's fine as you can eat and drink what you like, but if you drank and ate non vegetarian foods, you weren't really vegetarian.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 25/08/2024 09:25

If it's this one, it does say with basil mayonnaise on the label to be fair 🙈

As I said I wasnt that bothered, I didnt wear a badge and have a certificate. A lot of 'veggies' are the same.

Also fine. But they weren't vegetarian either. If you and they aren't bothered, I wonder why they 'bother' to say they're vegetarian in the first place.

As an aside, you weren’t ever really vegetarian then.

Where's the pesto then? M&S clearly drove past the pesto pump before they filled up with "basil mayonnaise"! 😁😔

The vegan or vegetarian description literally changes what the expectations of the wrap should be 🤣

amoreoamicizia · 25/08/2024 09:35

With apologies to the delicate flowers of Mumsnet : "basil mayonnaise", my arse! ☹️

I think it's a rare vegetarian that is completely vegetarian. So many things use byproducts, or aren't veggie that you'd think. I had no idea figs weren't, or wine, or some sugar, or many other things. And accidental ingestion is a thing, unless you're finely going over everything and not eating any processed food at all.

Not rare in my experience. They're not vegetarian if they eat things that aren't vegetarian. I know lots of people who eat mainly vege/vegan but don't call themselves vege/vegan because they know they're not. Those that say they're vegetarian are actually vegetarian and check food labels. There's plenty of processed food that is vegetarian.

RicherThanYew · 25/08/2024 09:41

I'm sorry op but the two different tangents on this thread are hilarious 😂 I would be pissed off with runny basil mayonnaise but I hate pesto too (I think it's the pine nuts). I have a recipe for a fantastic mushroom vol au vent that MIL makes for me at family dinners, highly recommended.

libertybonds · 25/08/2024 09:43

My boyfriend eats this literally every day he goes into the office 😂

I personally think that packaged sandwiches are usually grim so YABU to expect anything great, and that the mayo probably stops it being too dry.

If you've worked in food production... there isn't as much as you think. Wasps in jam is the one I've experienced. And post-Brexit there may be more www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/food-standards-brexit-uk-us-trade-deal-maggots-rat-hair-worms-insects-mould-products-a8575721.html

sunsetsandboardwalks · 25/08/2024 09:45

@amoreoamicizia yeah, the labelling doesn't make much sense 😂

TofuFighters · 25/08/2024 10:01

There's still plenty. It doesn't bother me though as I don't eat it anyway. My point was really to the person who said they knowingly ate/drank things that were not vegetarian, not accidental ingestion.
