Paid agreed amount but is demanding more

ive had a cleaner for over a year and it seems shes always made prices up. for over 3 months i was paying a set amount of £80, this is for her and her son to clean for an hour. lately she keeps saying she did something extra so will need an extra £20 or she had to put clothes away of move cushions or toys, extra £30 even thought shes never stayed any longer and sometimes leaves early.
The final straw was shes now charged me £120 this week, she was on her own and i asked why and she's stating that she had to fold clothes that were on the table and pick toys up, i said she should of asked about this before deciding to add an extra £40, she still only stayed an hour, that's £120 for an hours work. i replied saying we agreed a set amount every 2 weeks so this is what i am paying. does this not sound like extortionate amount of money. i am north of the UK. She did deep clean for me when she started and this was for 5 hours of work for £220 which i thought was reasonable at the time, but £120 for an hour? she is saying she will make a claim.

Just get a new cleaner.

EmeraldIsla · 23/08/2024 14:55

She's a micky taker. Get rid.

invisiblecat · 23/08/2024 14:57

A claim? Where? In the small claims court? She can't make a claim unless she has some proof that a price was agreed in advance, and you are refusing to pay. She doesn't have that, so let her crack on.

In the meantime, find another cleaner.

Deipara · 23/08/2024 14:58

Let her make her claim 🙄 whilst you get a new cleaner. She's taking the piss out of you. You've made it easy for her tbf but now you get a new cleaner and start out by agreeing that any extra work she does she needs to ask whether you want it doing and agree a price beforehand.

DelphiniumBlue · 23/08/2024 14:59

"Make a claim" ???
a) She's got nothing to make a claim for
b) She's clearly a nasty piece of work and you can't trust her in your house. You'll have to tell her you don't want her to come any more. But careful how you do it, she sounds vindictive. Get the key back, if she's got it, first.

Jooleybooley · 23/08/2024 14:59

Pay her off and get another one with more transparent pricing. The whole cleaner industry seems to have exploded lately so there should be healthy competition.

Wwyd2025 · 23/08/2024 14:59

She won't get anywhere as you didn't agree to the price increase piror.

Sack her find a proper cleaner she's probably not even paying taxes!

LittleGreenDragons · 23/08/2024 15:01

You are being robbed. Get rid and find another cleaner.

MaryGreenhill · 23/08/2024 15:01

You need to sack her and get another cleaner from a cleaning firm so you don't have to pay them yourself.
I am so sorry you had this experience.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 23/08/2024 15:01

Tell her to put the toys back and unfold the clothes.

Dearg · 23/08/2024 15:02

Cleaners here are between £15- £20 per hour. £ 80 would cover a holiday home changeover. She sounds terrible. Another vote for getting rid.
And if she has a key, change the locks.

MaryGreenhill · 23/08/2024 15:03

Also OP change your locks if she had access to a key .
She could have got it copied .

CharmingGeorge · 23/08/2024 15:03

Pay her what you’ve agreed then fire her, there are plenty of reputable cleaners out there, she is ripping you off. I would also look for a way to leave a review for her services as a warning to others.

Hazydetailonlife · 23/08/2024 15:04

Good grief. Sack her immediately. She is taking the piss and is not to be trusted.

AllrightNowBaby · 23/08/2024 15:04

Ring her now and tell her to not come back again as you can’t afford her…
End of!!!
Do.It.Now……

Hazydetailonlife · 23/08/2024 15:04

Send a text or email and tell her you no longer need her services. If she has keys, change your locks, returning them is not enough.

TinyYellow · 23/08/2024 15:05

She is taking the piss out of you. Tell her to fuck off.

Gorgonemilezola · 23/08/2024 15:07

If this is true you need a new cleaner. Who pays their cleaner £120 for one hour?

Guavafish1 · 23/08/2024 15:07

Definitely get a new cleaner

99RedBallonz · 23/08/2024 15:07

Your paying £40 an hour for a cleaner. She is already charging you way beyond the usual price. I pay £17 an hour and get two cleaners, so that's £34 a week.

The agreement was they work per hour, not per task. So they don't randomly charge me an extra £20 for folding up some throws. What was the original agreement you had? Personally I think they are pistakers and see you as a bit of a mug. I'd get someone new.

Devilsmommy · 23/08/2024 15:09

Bloody hell, I'll be your cleaner for £80 an hour. She's taken the absolute piss out of you from the get go

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 23/08/2024 15:10

The going rate in the North is between £15-£20 an hour.
My first one got paid hourly and basically helped with anything I asked. She was brilliant and so reliable.
I now use a cleaning company where they bring their own materials. They are pretty good but I do notice if you ask for something like a window cleaning it’s an extra task and more money.
Get someone else and make sure you agree on what you would like done.

junebirthdaygirl · 23/08/2024 15:19

I couldn't have that woman in my house again. She is taking you for a ride and has no respect for you even though you are completely overpaying her. Dump her today as you never want to see her again. Hopefully you will get calls looking for references and you can tell the truth. Next cleaner make it clear the jobs may change in small ways and you will be paying by the hour..possibly 20 . Have everything clear from the outset.

MounjaroUser · 23/08/2024 15:26

I'll come round and fold up every item of clothing in your house for that!

She's massively taking the piss. Pay what you agreed at the start and tell her that you don't want her coming any more. Get the keys back - if you can't do that, get the locks changed.

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 23/08/2024 15:30

I’d pay the prior agreed £80 and not a penny more. They find someone else and sign a contract
