Just for fun. Would love to just hear people's thoughts and reasons behind this one.

I currently live in the UK.
My choice would be France.
Because I love France.
Proximity to home.
I would choose to live in a northern city.
And I speak a bit of the language.

I’ve lived in France and Italy. Currently in Switzerland making plans to move to Ireland in December.

For all of the reasons above.

some of my family have moved to Ireland, they’re loving it - main driver was to get an Irish passport in 5 years time.

Italy. Bologna region. Most people speak English as it's a huge student area, and the food is amazing. I'll die every Summer, but it would be worth it for the food and wine.

Edenmum2 · 23/08/2024 14:03

Iceland. It's incredible and the people are amazing

cheezncrackers · 23/08/2024 14:07

Italy or the US. We can't live in Italy (no EU passports), but we're US citizens and I'd be happy living there again. The quality of life is mostly higher, I think. Wages in the UK are so low and the CoL so high now that I think in future a lot of people with options will vote with their feet.

Costa Rica

Beautiful country and Spanish isn't too tricky to learn.

I left the UK and live in Ireland, which is my childhood country. If I had to choose a third country I think possibly Portugal, I really like it there outside of the very touristy bits. I have always thought that wine making areas are good places to live because there is usually good food there too, people with a good palate for wine also have sophisticated food preferences.

I'm also drawn to Andorra, I have no idea why except that I like mountains. I've never visited it, perhaps I wouldn't like as much in person as I do in theory.

Scotland

I'm American, but lived in Scotland for a few years and go back when I can. I love everything about it: the people, the great cities, the lovely rural areas, the history and culture.

tobee · 23/08/2024 14:21

France. I always thought I'd live there for a bit at least.

Probably the country I've visited the most regions of apart from the U.K.

Bluevelvetsofa · 23/08/2024 14:31

Italy, South of France or Greece for the weather.
Canada or Australia for ease of communication.

SlothOnARope · 23/08/2024 14:45

Wales. I have a pipe dream to learn Welsh and permanent hiraeth.

Moonshine5 · 23/08/2024 14:49

Indonesia
Portugal
Thailand

KreedKafer · 23/08/2024 14:52

Any of the Nordic countries - I have no problem with cold, dark winters.

I could also quite happily live in France, Germany or the Netherlands. If I lived in France I'd pick the alpine region. I could probably live in the northernmost part of Italy too.

Much as I love Mediterranean countries to visit, I couldn't handle the summer heat.

fussychica · 23/08/2024 14:57

Probably back to Spain. I always thought I'd buy in Playa Blanca in Lanzarote after many years of going there but when it came to it didn't fancy living on such a small island long term so opted for the mainland. Spent a very happy decade there and still return for a couple of months a year. I really like France and Portugal but I'm too old for learning another language.

Tiredandmenopausal · 23/08/2024 14:59

A Greek island would be the dream. Otherwise, Malta...my Nan was from there, or Germany where my dh is from

tinydynamine · 23/08/2024 15:01

Germany...been here for over 30 years already. It's going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment though, but it's coped with worse in the past.

Augustus40 · 23/08/2024 15:03

Belgium or the Netherlands. I am half Flemish so although not fluent can understand Flemish/Dutch.

A27009D56 · 23/08/2024 15:05

Canada - Vancouver but I’d need to be rich as it’s very expensive

AllrightNowBaby · 23/08/2024 15:07

Australia definitely…. I visit my friend in Queensland and it is glorious, lovely friendly people as well.

GalileoHumpkins · 23/08/2024 15:09

We moved to Ireland from the UK 16 years ago, I can't see us ever moving back.

Ifeelthesameway · 23/08/2024 15:09

Scotland and a Georgian house in New Town

manywanderings · 23/08/2024 15:12

France, Better healthcare, better trains, nice climate, and I like the language.

Inextremis · 23/08/2024 15:14

Another one here who moved to Ireland - 25 years ago, with no plans to ever leave. If I had to, I'd go back to the UK because I still have friends there - I can't think of a third place I'd want to live - maybe the Netherlands at a push, although I've not been there!

sonjadog · 23/08/2024 15:18

I am living the rest of my life in another country (Norway), but if I had to choose, maybe Germany or the Netherlands. Somewhere central European so that I can go on weekend breaks on the train to interesting places.
