Really worried about the possibility of “pay per mile”

Yorkiepud2614 · 23/08/2024 08:43

I’ve been seeing more and more about this new proposal “pay per mile” that would replace car duty (I think). Which the average household bill somewhere around £450 - £600. Lots of reports that it may come in this October.
Living in the Highlands this would completely cripple us. Do people really think the new government will bring this change in?

😂😂😂

Where I live doesn’t.

Where do you live that doesn't already have local services in walking distance?

Christ, swathes of the country lives like that. And not just rural people.

StnNurse · 23/08/2024 13:50

if this comes in say goodbye to district and community nurses!

The fact that you’ve just written this shows just how out of touch many people are with rural living. The only thing I could access within walking distance is a pub otherwise everything else is a 20 min drive away.

Teateaandmoretea · 23/08/2024 13:50

If they want to raise some tax revenue then the low hanging fruit is vapes

It’s truly baffling isn’t it?

Thinking about it this fits in very nicely with the desire to bring in the 15 min city/town. They want to stop people travelling so much and make sure the ability to move about becomes accessible to only the wealthy and elite.

The fear of 15 minute cities is actually a conspiracy theory spread by Big Oil and EV makers to keep everyone driving long distances in their cars.

StnNurse · 23/08/2024 13:50

Why? They’ll still submit mileage claims.

shockeditellyou · 23/08/2024 13:52

London style congestion charging for towns and cities would easily solve the rural/no option issues. Drive to a P&R and then use supported public transport, and use ANPR to bill those who drive on motorways or into city centres.

Somehow most of Europe has managed to solve this problem, whilst having better quality public transport and road surfaces into the bargain.

I asked you a question. Do you live in the UK? If so you would know that almost all towns and cities are 15 minutes towns and cities.

Wales, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland.... You know, the UK?

BlackShuck3 · 23/08/2024 13:55

"Walking distance" is surely something of an elastic term- those who enjoy walking might be happy with a 10+ mile round trip, those who don't won't even walk a mile 🤷🏻‍♀️

Begsthequestion · 23/08/2024 13:56

Big Oil wants you to be afraid of 15 minute cities.

They want you to keep guzzling that oil that makes them so much money!!!!1

Don't fall for it!!

(Idk if that's true but it makes much more sense to me).

Have you ever lived in a town?

Not another unpopular Labour policy! Surely not.

Correction.

Another unpopular labour policy that may be announced according to a the Daily Express.

Along with all the "tax raids"

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 23/08/2024 13:58

Iwasafool · 23/08/2024 13:24

Why isn't it the same? The garage would only be submitting the mileage and charging for that service just like the submit your MOT details and get paid and pass on part of that to govt as admin fee. Once the figure is confirmed the govt would claim what you owe, bit like paying interest on your savings, the bank doesn't collect your tax they just give the proof of what it is and then it is settled between you and the govt.

They put the mileage in already. But say your 50 over the threshold for the next tax band, your asking the inspector to push that button and make that person pay more - or less.

the ministry wouldn’t trust them to do the same with real time emissions testing and charging. This is the same

It wasnt a labour specific policy. It was first banded about in 2022 by the Transport Select Committee.....a cross party committee.

Notonthestairs · 23/08/2024 13:41

As you say, it's not a Labour policy. Just something the Transport Committee looked at 2 years ago.

and sixteen years ago

itsgettingweird · 23/08/2024 14:01

The irony being that when the election was on Labour we're almost criticised daily for not considering or putting in their manifesto that they were going to revise council tax based on a newer house value system.

I'm almost gutted we didn't get a "council tax raid" headline.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 23/08/2024 14:01

But saying that oil and EV companies started the rumours is also a conspiracy . What we do know is very often these ideas are spread via the media to see how the public react to it. Personally I think it’s another way to curtail our freedom. Someone else will see it as an effective environmental policy.

What I do know is the wealthy are never hampered by these taxes. It’s always the everyday person who is fucked over by the congestion charge as they have an old vehicle or a tax per mile because they don’t have the job that allows WFH or flexibility. .

Where on the oh so heavenly according to mumsnet continent are you referring to?

WeWillGetThereInTheEnd · 23/08/2024 08:59

Yes, we really do think it will come in - that’s what all those gantries on the motorways are for! If cars do go all electric, something has to replace the revenue from the duty and VAT on petrol for the government’s tax take.

Edited
Confused And there was me thinking those gantries were to show lane closures and changes in speed limits. But for all these decades they have been there for another purpose entirely. Well I'll be darned.
