Really worried about the possibility of “pay per mile”

I’ve been seeing more and more about this new proposal “pay per mile” that would replace car duty (I think). Which the average household bill somewhere around £450 - £600. Lots of reports that it may come in this October.
Living in the Highlands this would completely cripple us. Do people really think the new government will bring this change in?

I live in a rural area and have no choice but to drive. I've just looked at the public transport options for me to get to work. I start at 0630 - apparently I've need to get the last bus the night before and sleep outside overnight 😂

Literally impossible to come in this October. How do you think they will know how many miles you’ve done. The infrastructure isn’t there.

They could just use the MOT system. The garage updates your mileage each year and you pay either monthly ahead based on your own readings confirmed by the garage annually or within 30 days of the MOT for the year based on their reading.

KnickerlessParsons · 23/08/2024 13:14

We "pay per mile" now. People who live further from shops etc use more petrol to get to them.
When we're no longer using petrol we'll need to pay tax according to usage some other way.

Not for electric cars it's not. That's THE big issue. As more cars are becoming electric, then fuel tax revenue will fall and those billions need to be made up by electric cars somehow.

Presumably the pp hasn’t got an EV, they were objecting to paying per mile - everyone who drives a car that needs to be filled at the pump is already paying per mile. Aren’t they?

I am disliking this government already!

Yes! Fuel tax!

Electric car drivers aren't "paying per mile"! They're not paying fuel tax at all.

Yes! Fuel tax!

Yes!! Well done - and VAT.

TinyYellow · 23/08/2024 13:16

Awful idea. The government is supposed to work towards improving our lives instead of making it difficult and unaffordable.

How would they compensate for people who can’t use public transport either because of a permanent disability, or a temporarily broken leg, or people who need to frequently drive to hospital for cancer treatment? Or are those people all to be considered as a bonus for inland revenue?

Electric cars won't be exempt from "pay per mile" will they? It's highly likely, if not a forgone certainty, that electric cars will be liable under whatever new pay per mile systems come into force. It's inevitable as the petrol/diesel fuel duty etc will start to dry up over the forthcoming years as petrol/diesel cars stop being made. So the OP is just as likely to drive electric as they are likely to drive IC.

Yet another policy designed around and for those that live in cities where there is public transport and everything is on the street corner. I cannot walk out of my house because there is no pavement and lots of bends in a very narrow road. the nearest shop for milk is over 3 miles away. rural isolation is a real issue yet politicians cant wait to rush off to London and forget us.

I live in a London Borough 3 miles to the nearest shop, 5 miles to the nearest station. Buses stop at 6pm and do not run on a Sunday. The buses only run every 2-3 hours.

We also have a ULEZ camera on the country lane with no pavements or street lights.

People that were protesting about ULEZ were called mad right wing thugs by this cities mayor, ULEZ has crippled lots of Londoners where it was not needed.
I can see pay per mile within the next 18 months.

MrsSlocombesCat · 23/08/2024 13:18

I think we should wait for facts. No amount of speculation is going to tell us if this is a real policy, or if it is what it would entail. The right wing are trying desperately to spread scaremongering around about the new government.

Yes this is true.

God, you do like stating the bleeding’ obvious, don’t you @taxguru?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/08/2024 13:19

Cobblersorchard · 23/08/2024 09:13

My MP is surveying about it on her socials as we speak.

Conservative?

Sounds more like a disinformation/rumour mongering exercise to me.

Not hugely bothered in any case, as it makes sense that the people who use the most resources/road wear/electricity pay more than the person who keeps mileage under x thousand miles a year. Otherwise you'd have somebody doing 50,000+ going all over the UK paying less than somebody who only goes to and from work, the supermarket, doctors and dentist.

Why do you think someone might be doing 50000 miles?

So why did you make a nonsensical post in the first place to which I replied?

DinnaeFashYersel · 23/08/2024 13:20

Prenelope · 23/08/2024 09:29

So it will probably end up cheaper to fly than drive.

It already is

No sorry I meant road tax from next year.

Teateaandmoretea · 23/08/2024 13:21

If they do then it will be Starmer’s poll tax moment.

ULEZ is different it only covers a small proportion of the population and most cars are exempt anyway.

Yorkiepud2614 · 23/08/2024 09:10

It’s been popping up on a lot of new sites in the past 48 hours. Rumours are for October

Which news sites? From what I could see it's just The Express doing one of their "Labour COULD introduce something soon that will ruin your life aaaaarrrrrgghh!" stories.

BlackShuck3 · 23/08/2024 13:23

Electric cars mean no more revenue from vehicle fuel combined with significantly increased road repair costs.
Pay per mile is a no brainer, surely?

Crumpleton · 23/08/2024 13:23

EV owners will have to start paying vehicle excise soon enough. It'll start at a reasonable cost then slowly, as most things, will rise year on year.
