Isn't this just what newborns are like??

Newborn DS is 3 weeks old. I have one older DD but she is 9 so it was a long time ago that she was a baby but I'm sure she was similar. DS is breastfed and at night his longest stretch of sleep is about 2 hours...maybe 2.5 hours at a push. And it often takes me a little while to settle after a feed. He's not generally unsettled other than the normal newborn fusses. However in my NCT group a couple of the mums have said I should get him looked at for CMPA or reflux as he wakes so often at night. Surely he wakes a normal amount for a newborn baby?! I don't remember my eldest doing long stretches at night until she was at least 3 months if not older probably.

Sounds totally normal to me, and actually quite good!

modgepodge · 22/08/2024 19:17

I got a couple of 3 hour stretches out of my newborn and people seemed to think that was quite good 🤷‍♀️ I think it sounds normal.

I think that's amazing, I'd love that right now!!

Sounds normal!

FriendlyRobin · 22/08/2024 19:20

Sounds good to me. I think it took a few weeks for mine to learn night was for sleeping in the first place.

I do wonder if it's different for formal babies.

Loolapallooozah · 22/08/2024 19:21

Thank you! Was beginning to doubt my sanity!

It does seem in circles I know that every other baby is diagnosed with either reflux or CMPA at the moment.

I breastfed 4 babies - totally normal.

Normal.

I remember being told that a newborn's stomach is the size of a walnut, so they can't hold much milk, hence the need for refill.

As to unsettled - they're new, their gut is new and only just getting used to it's function,

HVPRN · 22/08/2024 19:28

Normal! Try every hour during the growth spurts ;) you're defo looking at 1-2 hourly for breastfed babies. As their stomach grows, could be two hourly. Invest in a sling and a cup of tea flask for when you're nap-trapped ;) but defo for first 3-4 months. If you join breastfeeding forums, very normal for lots of waking past 1 year old or you could be one of the lucky ones!

Oh gosh I don't miss that time. I hardly got sleep between feeds. Sounds normal to me.

Loolapallooozah · 22/08/2024 19:49

Oh my eldest woke at night for ages, I just remember from 3 months I started getting 4-5 hours out of her.

Totally normal. Are the babies of these other NCT members formula fed by any chance? Anecdotally they might sleep a bit longer because of that

Mrsttcno1 · 22/08/2024 19:55

Totally normal OP. My baby is 4 months old now and has only very recently started sleeping longer than that😂🥲

Yes they all are.

I breast fed 5 babies and none of mine woke that often in the night.

I'm sure, but every 2-2.5 hours is still totally normal for a 3 week old baby and not an indication of something being wrong.

It hasn’t been normal for any of mine but I formula feed.

3 hours was the ‘worst’ it got for me but it stretched to 5+ hours quite quickly.

JacquiDaytona · 22/08/2024 20:01

Very normal for mine! Not a great sleeper until he was well past 12 months - then we had a great 10months or so of 12hr stretche ls - now we’re on refusing bedtime and 5am get ups 🥲 all normal, and all will pass!!

Creepybookworm · 22/08/2024 20:02

As part of the NCT course they would have been told newborns typically wake every 2-3 hours for feeding (sometimes more). They obviously didn't have their listening ears on!

2sisters · 22/08/2024 20:04

I think that's pretty normal. My eldest slept 1 1/2 - 2 hours. My youngest slept 3 hours. My eldest slept through the night at 1 1/2. The youngest is 4 and still wakes up in the night 😴.

CurbsideProphet · 22/08/2024 20:07

When my DS was newborn he fed all night until 5am some nights 😵‍💫 just putting in his order for the next day's milk!

I'm a rubbish sleeper and so are my various members of my immediate family, so I would have been surprised if my DS had turned out to be a good sleeper 😀

AudHvamm · 22/08/2024 20:08

Mine woke 3-4 times between about 8pm and 7am at that age and was considered lucky so yes I think that's probably pretty good for a newborn.

BranstonPickleAndNikNaks · 22/08/2024 20:09

I think there's a huge variation in "normal". Both mine were EBF but one slept for 4-hour stretches basically from birth (and sometimes longer - on occasion I had to wake him to feed as I was so engorged and uncomfortable!). The second woke every 1-2 hours and was well over a year old before she started doing 4-ish hour stretches with any regularity.
People just want reasons for things and CMPA /reflux are easy scapegoats!

thegrumpusch · 22/08/2024 20:09

Totally normal! One of mine did have silent reflux but the night waking was not the only, nor the strongest, red flag for that.
