Isn't this just what newborns are like??

Newborn DS is 3 weeks old. I have one older DD but she is 9 so it was a long time ago that she was a baby but I'm sure she was similar. DS is breastfed and at night his longest stretch of sleep is about 2 hours...maybe 2.5 hours at a push. And it often takes me a little while to settle after a feed. He's not generally unsettled other than the normal newborn fusses. However in my NCT group a couple of the mums have said I should get him looked at for CMPA or reflux as he wakes so often at night. Surely he wakes a normal amount for a newborn baby?! I don't remember my eldest doing long stretches at night until she was at least 3 months if not older probably.

Thank you! Was beginning to doubt my sanity!

It does seem in circles I know that every other baby is diagnosed with either reflux or CMPA at the moment.

I am not sure why they think wanting to be fed regularly by itself would be a symptom. When you have a CMPA/reflux baby that's the absolute least of your problems.

Mine had constant hiccups, wind that nobody could get out of him, awful constipation that no amount of bicycle legs would solve, poo full of mucous, gunky eyes, smelled of acid constantly, blotchy red skin, and all sorts of other stuff I have repressed.

He needed to be held upright for at least 30 minutes after a feed. He would scream for literally hours. Not a hungry cry but real pained screaming that would make me feel sick. He could never do tummy time (agreed with paediatrician before anyone comes at me) and basically lived vertically in a sling for months.

The experience was bordering on traumatic. The response from medical professionals felt psychopathic, and all of it has really made me hesitant to have another child. In fact after talking to other mums with similar stories, i would be very interested in research on the link between PND and reflux/CMPA.

I have always felt strongly that mums need to be listened to and not dismissed with colic but I also feel a bit offended at your friends thinking that CMPA looks like a newborn waking up to eat regularly. Most of us would have loved nothing more than to have a mostly happy baby who fed regularly and just had a bit of a grumble sometimes.

I'm surprised you know so many people whose babies are diagnosed though. Getting diagnosed was a nightmare. It was only after he dropped 2 centiles and was "failing to thrive" despite drinking 3x and 4x the amount of recommended formula that anyone actually believed us that something was wrong.

So normal and you sound like you have your head screwed on!

Yes they all are.

Well yeah that would make a difference. What you’re describing is completely normal for a BF baby

I had one baby with cmpa, one without.

Both woke up ALL the time!

Longest stretch of sleep before 7 months was 3 hours for both.

For cmpa, you'd have lots of other symptoms as well as frequent waking / trouble sleeping.

Sounds normal and will get better!

@Placio sending you love. Our little one had acid reflux bad and woke about every 45 mins - 90 mins shrieking in discomfort. It's hideous. Every 3hrs to eat is normal

11 weeks old EBF here and back at 3 weeks we were getting a max of 3 hours between feeds overnight and more like 90 minutes during the day.

We're now at the dizzy heights of 2.5 hours in the day and sometimes up to 5 at night!
