Woke up with migraine aura, wwyd?

I've only ever had a handful of these, not always with headache.

Woke up with it in my right eye this morning, like an undulating, glistening ball of wool. Drank a lot of water and a cup of tea, ate a piece of toast. I'll have another lie down now but anything else you'd do, considering they don't usually become a painful headache?

Ice pack from a first aid kit... The one you have to scrunch to activate.... Life changing ime.

LozzaChops101 · 22/08/2024 11:47

Caffeine, carbs, electrolytes, tiger balm. If you can have a walk it sometimes helps! Good luck!

Hoppinggreen · 22/08/2024 11:52

When I get a proper migraine the only thing that works is sleep. I am not a napper but when I get a migraine my body just kind of shuts down and I sleep deeply and through most noises for about 2 hours and then wake up feeling a bit better. Then I eat toast and have some caffine and start to feel a bit more human, although I will be woozy for another 24 hours. Key for me is to eat regularly when recovering

Take some migraleve or other migraine tablets and go back to bed.

HerculesMulligannn · 22/08/2024 11:58

I get these v occasionally and I think dehydration is a big trigger for me. I would get as much fluid as you are able - not sure re coffee though, although everyone responds differently. I just keep sipping - not chugging - room temperature water. I also try not to panic as quite often it doesn’t escalate too badly. Good luck.

SeaToSki · 22/08/2024 12:06

I would take a migraine painkiller with caffeine. They work by relaxing the blood vessels in the brain which improves blood flow and can stop the migraine. Its not just about pain relief

Toddlerteaplease · 22/08/2024 12:09

Full fat coke. Anadin extra abs sumatriptan.

trainedopossum · 22/08/2024 12:10

Thanks all. Aura stopped sparking, went a bit dark at the bottom of my vision in right eye, seems better now. Sore neck, spaced out now.

I think dehydration is a trigger too, last time I got this it was just before Christmas and I was in M&S, hungry, thirsty and a bit stressed.

I've been sleeping late, maybe too much, for a couple of days recovering from broken sleep. I'll put on some Netflix for another hour on the sofa and see if I drift off.

I only have paracetamol, co-codamol or NSAIDs. I took a paracetamol yesterday for an unremarkable headache, dunno if it's related. Have been sorting out some stressful personal problems and my dog was put down a few weeks ago, I'm sure that's part of it.

Thanks again for expert advice 💐

Take a pink migraleve if you have them. And sleep, for as long as you can.
it may be that you slept at a funny angle or your mattress is digging in, my aura migraines are often due to spinal tension.

augustusglupe · 22/08/2024 12:11

I had one this morning. I’ve done pretty much what you have OP. I’ve just taken 2 pink Migraleve and I’m going back to bed for a bit, then I’m going to have a nice hot shower.
I didn’t want to take the pinks too soon as I felt sick, but that’s worn off now.
I’ll also stick to fairly bland foods for a few days.
Hope you feel better ☺️

Moier · 22/08/2024 12:17

Migraleve is co codimol but with an anti sickness.
If you have any apples peel and eat the skin.. the pectin helps.
Cold flannel on forehead.
Dark room and rest.

NotOnlyFedUpButAlso · 22/08/2024 12:17

Aura migraines normally only last 20, maybe 30 minutes. I've never had, and never heard of, auras that last longer than this. I have woken to them a couple of times, very unusual because there's no obvious trigger.

I'd get seen if this is lingering.

NotOnlyFedUpButAlso · 22/08/2024 12:20

Also just realised you said its only in one eye. That's not usual for migraine aura, OP, please seek advice for this.

PoolQuandry · 22/08/2024 12:25

I've had aura migraines last days and even weeks. Always on one side of my head. I don't think it's remarkable but I do visit the doctor if they go on for an excessive period of time.

Namechangencncnc · 22/08/2024 12:26

Get some sumatriptan to have in for these moments.

Don't doubt you at all but just want to be crystal clear, you actually get the visual disturbance - the flashing zig zag lights - for days or even weeks in one eye only? Wow!

I agree, the aura is usually still there if you close either eye, and also when you close your eyes.

I always take cocodamol as soon as the aura starts. Any other symptoms send me to bed in a dark quiet room.

They wipe me out and I have a weird hangover from them.

I hope that you feel better soon!

I only ever get it in one eye, sometimes it's like a firework going off then the zigzags, gaps in vision, and loss of speech happens.
It is usual with this type of migraine.

NotOnlyFedUpButAlso · 22/08/2024 12:56

Well, all i can say is that my experience is different to yours. Nothing wrong with that, of course. I don't think aura in one eye is at all usual, because it occurs in the visual cortex, not in the eye, but migraines are weird. I'd be interested to hear if others get aura in one eye only. I am impressed that you get the aphasia, fun isn't it? That is quite rare.

trainedopossum · 22/08/2024 12:59

That's good to know, I only ever get it in one eye, could be either. Went away after 30-45 minutes.

I took some co-codamol and drew the curtains. Weepy now and bored, bit sick but headache unremarkable.

Will stay off my phone now but thanks again all.

I’d take a prescription migraine pill because I have them.

then caffeine and a rich meal. Then lots of water.

FishFlaked · 22/08/2024 13:03

I get it in one eye at a time only too. No idea what’s normal or not. I hate migraines. See your GP anyway OP so at least they can reassure you?

No. Not continuously. There are other features to the aura migraine.

PeterGabrielsunderpants · 22/08/2024 13:04

I would stick to just water, no tea

K37529 · 22/08/2024 13:06

Have you had your eyes tested? I get migraine aura, the doctor sent me to the opticians just to make sure it wasn’t a problem with my vision (they didn’t find anything). I don’t do anything when I get one except close my eyes and wait for it to pass, usually lasts around 20 minutes. I feel ok after, a bit hazy maybe but able to get on with my day. It happens maybe once a month. It’s really annoying and I’m always worried it’s going to happen when I’m driving, it just comes on suddenly, there’s no pre warning , id love to know what’s causing it so I can avoid it.
