Woke up with migraine aura, wwyd?

I've only ever had a handful of these, not always with headache.

Woke up with it in my right eye this morning, like an undulating, glistening ball of wool. Drank a lot of water and a cup of tea, ate a piece of toast. I'll have another lie down now but anything else you'd do, considering they don't usually become a painful headache?

Interesting that the symptoms can be quite different for everyone. DH gets the zigzag lines and headache but can take mild pain relief and it's gone within an hour. DD gets one sided visual disturbances and numbness down the one side of her face/mouth and body and has a whopping migraine within minutes which lasts hours. She's only 9 so the consultant says no Sumatriptan unless it doesn't go away with paracetamol and ibuprofen. GP contradicts that and says go straight in with Sumatriptan as they've seen her mid migraine and think she needs it.

It's always good to read things that help others as I'd like to help minimise DDs as soon as possible when they start.

It's time for an eye test actually, thanks for reminding me. I was told that my dry eyes could trigger migraine but I've been using lubricating drops.

Before I got glasses I had painless but nauseating migraines, no aura, in my 20s after long periods of computer use. I had aura followed by a painful migraine once in my 30s, then aura alone twice in my 50s, it really isn't a disabling problem, I think this is the fourth time.

I told the gynaecologist in case it was hrt but she wasn't worried.

I've eaten some mini pork pies, made some scrambled eggs and toast, drinking ginger ale. Bored, still feeling rubbish but not weepy so that's something. Can still speak!

My go to when I get these is a can of full sugar, full caffeine coke. I generally find I can carry on within half an hour if I get that inside of me. I’m not generally a coke drinker but always have some in my desk drawer and at home.

It’s funny how different everyone’s migraines can be!

My Aura is dizziness or a vertigo type feeling, no actual vision like flashes or sparks, in fact it’s a lot like having a bad case of the spins when drunk. I hate it! It’s usually accompanied by a wooly head feeling, feeling kind of heavy or sleepy/dopey. I really can’t think straight I have one. Can also cause me to vomit.

In my late teens and 20s the aura was still the same but I used to also get a got awful headache typically more on one side and through the back of my neck. Back then every single migraine made me vomit sometimes landed me in hospital, though to be fair I didn’t know they were migraines back then, I really thought I was dying.

These days if I catch it soon enough 1 or 2 pink migraleave will see most of it off and I can function. A nap can help too, along with a very sugary drink. Sometimes there is no way round it except to puke my guts up and have a proper sleep in a dark room and just ride it out.

The one sided numbness is so weird. Half my nose/lips/one eyelid etc. the first time it happened I was terrified. The only thing I can do is get into bed, curtains closed, and sleep. Like a PP, it’s like my body just shuts down. I zonk out, then wake with body back to normal, and a thick head.

Yes DD needs to lie in the dark and just sleep. Very hard the first few times at 8/9 years old to be told nothing can be done but that she needs to stop crying in order for it to get better. She now knows that as much as she needs to cry it's just making it worse so will try to just lie in silence and the meds usually help her fall asleep. Then there's no waking her til her body wants to.

I get migraines so know how painful they are but the numbness she describes scared me the first time.

Sugar, caffeine, carbs, paracetamol, hydration, sleep. Also don't do anything complicated as I will cock things up (the things I've bought shopping with migraine have been ludicrously unsuitable and usually the wrong size)

Dehydration and not eating are major triggers for me. I used to have sumatriptan when they were worse but it gave me a weird pain in my neck. Felt exactly as though someone had put a brick on the back of my neck, and the feeling lasted for hours so I decided I preferred the migraine.

CabbagesAndCeilingWax · 22/08/2024 16:55

I'm glad to hear it doesn't seem to have progressed.

FWIW any hint of a migraine aura I always take ibuprofen (or your painkiller of choice) even if I don't yet have any pain - it sometimes seems to stop it in its tracks.

I also try to go for some salt and some sugar, like a packet of crisps and tube of fruit pastilles. Caffeine often helps temporarily, but then it hits me even harder the next day 🙄

The only thing that actually shakes it off (rather than just dialing it down to "bearable") is sleep.

Thanks for the advice. In future I'll keep a can of coke in the fridge.

Seems to have blown over mostly. It's funny, I felt so queasy but couldn't stop eating.

I was supposed to be making a long drive today but maybe not.

I have these for a few years
Completely painless
Only found out recently they are silent migraine - friend has them.
I have the z Izzy zag light / sparkles.
Letters missing in books / computer.
Usually goes after 20 mins.
Though the last one was hour.
Not sure what brings them
On Sunday I was reading in the garden (bright sunshine) but not stressed.
Another time I was having a relaxing walk.
