Just been told that I can’t put a door mat on my new laminate floor. Can anyone help?

I had no idea that I could not put a rubber or latex backed door mat on my new floor. As it is laid to patio doors, I have no idea what to put down. I cannot find any mats that are not backed by rubber. I really can’t believe that there is nothing suitable.

Does anyone know what the solution could be?

Who told you that and for what reason?

Gettingannoyednow · 21/08/2024 17:58

I've got them on my laminate and haven't noticed any issues yet....

Jollein · 21/08/2024 18:00

I had a rubber backed coir one on laminate at my front door and it was fine. At the back patio doors I cut one in half and it just sat on the inner wooden door sill if you have something like that on your door?

It can mark the laminate sometimes

Maybe a super thin one?

Is it because it changes colour underneath so you get a different coloured mat shaped square on the floor, this happened on our wooden floor, I think it's oak, in the hallway but since the mats are always there I'm not that bothered

Jollein · 21/08/2024 18:06

This is what I mean on the door sill. It yellowed more on the other side but easily repainted compared to if it marked the floor.

Expensive Luxury Vinyl Flooring can be damaged by cheap rubber-backed doormats but there are safe (expensive) doormats that are totally fine. I have turtlemats https://www.turtlemat.co.uk/ which are great - and machine washable.

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/08/2024 18:16

I've always had mats on my laminate at the front and back doors. Never had an issues at all.

Flossiecotton · 21/08/2024 18:22

I have had mats on mine before too. The package on this floor says not to use them. I don’t know of any alternative though

Yes, Turtle mats are supposed to be floor friendly, I would get one of them, you can get extra long ones for patio doors

Flossiecotton · 21/08/2024 18:25

So DH has just told me that it is not laminate but vinyl😳

I think it's the same on vinyl as well, I put two bathmats in a newly lino'd bathroom and it made it go pink, bleach didn't get rid of it either.

Bilbonne · 21/08/2024 18:28

I have vinyl in my kitchen and have had turtle mats on it for years and the colour hasn't changed, I think cheaper mats may mark

Bilbonne · 21/08/2024 18:29

It must be good vinyl OP if you didn't realise

Following cos I've heard this too and at the moment we are using a piece of carpet at our back door that we had turned into a mat a few years ago. We had coir mat installed at the front door. When we're on hols recently we lifted the door mat to sweep our cabin and it had gone all yellow underneath - the mat was rubber backed.

Oh that's interesting. Underneath my door mat looks like that but I sort of thought maybe the rest of the floor has faded in the sun over time, perhaps it's the mat!

You can get no rubber backed door mats. Wayfair do some I think.

PerkyMintDeer · 21/08/2024 19:30

No one told me this and in my first home, I'd put down a few rubberbacked mats on a gorgeous Karndean floor in the hallway to protect the floors while the contractors were coming in and out to do work in the other rooms.

It was really hot, summer and when I came back into the house 3 days later and lifted the mats the floor was ruined. Big white stains (even though the mats were black?!) left a permanent residue on the flooring. I cried! It was irrepairable and the last of the stock as it was recently discontinued.

Will never make that mistake again!

We have small outdoor rugs. They have separate rubber underlays to stop them slipping but you could try without them.

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 21/08/2024 19:49

I use the cheap long mats from Dunelm £4, they're made of carpet and I chuck them in the washing machine when they get dirty, I have a couple on rotation

StamppotAndGravy · 05/04/2025 15:11

Ruggable rugs claim to be floor safe. They'd better be because we've got 3 protecting our new floor

AllyDally · 05/04/2025 16:14

We have vinyl planking, we were recommended turtle mats, we use onw at the front door. Alternatively get woven backed and use vinyl safe rug tape.

Bluevelvetsofa · 05/04/2025 16:40

Our Amtico floor went yellow under the mat, by the patio doors, facing south. Not the same issue at the front, north facing door.
