Is it me or are Kindles expensive?

I am getting back into reading again and was looking at buying myself a Kindle. I had one a few years ago but ended up selling it as I didn't use it enough.

I've just been looking and I didn't realised they were £90+.

I've looked on Vinted for a second hand omand couldn't find a reasonably priced one on there either.

Are they really worth the money?

Love mine, but would wait until the next prime day as they're usually at least half price.
Also, I use the kindle app on my phone lots too.

exprecis · 20/08/2024 19:40

Waiting for prime day is a good shout.

As to whether it's worth it, depends how much you read and how/when.

I read a lot (average 80-100 books a year according to my kindle stats) and a lot of it is on the move, odd moments here and there, commute etc. Well worth it to me.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 20/08/2024 19:41

I think that they are better than others but agree that you should wait until they have a deal on and use the phone app until then.

I guess it would be Black Friday?

treacledan71 · 20/08/2024 19:42

There are quite a few in some second hand cash converter sort of shops. Think you get a guarantee. Saw some in a window.

doodleygirl · 20/08/2024 19:43

I bought a refurbished kindle for £40, no complaints

Aconite20 · 20/08/2024 19:43

Look online at CEX, that's where most of our tech comes from now. There might also be one locally.

elm26 · 20/08/2024 19:43

So worth it, I've had my paperwhite kindle since 2014 and still going strong 10 years later. I've had a case on it from the very beginning, holds the same charge, speed etc. I've saved so much money on books as more often than not books are 99p-£3 unless new releases.

IDontWantToWaitAnyMore · 20/08/2024 19:44

If you buy when they are on offer they're fantastic value for money. Mine is really old now and still works perfectly.

I think I just missed Prime Day, unless there is another one happening?

It depends how much you read as to whether it’s worth it, by my Kindle’s count I’ve bought & read 117 books so far this year (pregnant and then on maternity leave- lots of long nights wide awake breastfeeding😂). I think my Kindle was £80, and then I pay for Kindle Unlimited which is £11 a month and so I don’t pay for individual books. So since January I’ve spent £160 on Kindle + 8 months of the Kindle unlimited. With 117 books if I’d bought them all, even if you said they were £5 each (most of them are double that in the shops) I would have spent nearly £600.

However if you’re only going to read say 1 book a month, then no it’s probably not worth it.

I second CEX - there is usually a 24 month warranty so you can't go too far wrong.

treacledan71 · 20/08/2024 19:50

That's the shop I meant CEX that the previous poster put. when I said cash convertor type of shop.

pinklite · 20/08/2024 19:51

Can anyone tell me which gen is best or is there not much difference?

doodleygirl · 20/08/2024 19:52

I got mine from Amazon

BibbityBobbityToo · 20/08/2024 19:56

I joined my local library recently as they have a massive ebook catalogue through Borrow Box. I was pleasantly surprised and as I could sign up online, I didn't even have to leave my house to register.

I can use my phone and tablet to read the books and it syncs between the 2 devices.

Might be worth checking your local council website as I've never used my kindle for months now.

MarnieMooMoo · 20/08/2024 19:56

I use the Kindle App on my phone - it's free and I always have it with me so can read anywhere and anytime.

That wasn’t the case last month on Prime Day.
i waited until then to replace my Paperwhite and it was only reduced by £30.

CurlsandCurves · 20/08/2024 20:07

Is it worth it? I guess it depends on cost per use. First one, the original model, gave me about 8 years of use.

Current one is the paperwhite, bought almost 9 years ago. I use it every day so I’d say it was a bargain based on that.

DrinkElephants · 20/08/2024 20:13

I don’t think £90 seems excessive

useitorlose · 20/08/2024 20:16

Anna's Archive, search for title, look for epub format, select slow download, be patient, click download link, then send to kindle. Free books, job done.

BeaLola · 20/08/2024 20:17

I love mine - I've had one since they first came in . Last year I traded in during Black Fridayecent to a Paperwhite and I love it - I do read a lot and as I have Prine for delivery and tv etc I get a lot of books through that for free . When I was off sick recovering from a major op I paid to upgrade to unlimited and had an even bigger selection of free books

Menstum · 20/08/2024 20:18

Dont buy a Kindle, buy a Kobo then join a library. Then you read library books = not having to keep buying books.

Doggymummar · 20/08/2024 20:19

Can't you just use the app on your phone or iPad tablet. That's what I do, then it's free

FatOaf · 20/08/2024 20:19

Kindle versions of books are very cheap compared to paper versions. I'd have thought a £90 Kindle would pay for itself within about 10 books.

I don't have a Kindle because I don't like reading on screens. I have the Kindle app installed on my tablet for when I'm on long train journeys and want to read a book on the way home rather than work. I still don't really like using it but it's easier than trying to find space for a book in my laptop bag.
