Is it me or are Kindles expensive?

I am getting back into reading again and was looking at buying myself a Kindle. I had one a few years ago but ended up selling it as I didn't use it enough.

I've just been looking and I didn't realised they were £90+.

I've looked on Vinted for a second hand omand couldn't find a reasonably priced one on there either.

Are they really worth the money?

I’ve found it to be worth every penny. If you had one that wasn’t backlit before, I think you’ll love the backlight for reading in the dark. I upgraded last year and got the basic one and really like it. It cost approx £60 in one of Amazon’s sales. I buy 99p kindle books.

Pineappleprep · 20/08/2024 20:21

£90 isn't expensive but it is overpriced for a kindle in my opinion. Only because you can get a tablet that does the same plus 10 x more for the same price or less.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 20/08/2024 20:26

Dont buy a Kindle, buy a Kobo then join a library. Then you read library books = not having to keep buying books.

Yep. I read a lot, this has saved me a fortune (plus I can take all the books I want on holiday).

BlueFairyBugsBooks · 20/08/2024 20:29

Its definitely worth it for me. According to TheStoryGraph I've read 156.31 books on my kindle this year. No idea how it's not a whole number mind you! Grin

I haven't paid a penny for any of them either. Mind you, a very generous friend gave me the Kindle too.

orangetriangle · 20/08/2024 20:32

totally worth it and they last for years you can borrow books and some are free and many as cheap as 99 pence

TellySavalashairbrush · 20/08/2024 20:38

I had my last Kindle for 10+years and was devastated when I left it in a hotel room earlier this year (never got it back) I immediately had to purchase a new paperwhite and put it on the credit card. They are expensive , but I can’t be without mine. I need glasses to read and would find it difficult to read in bed with all the faff of a carefully positioned light and wearing my glasses.

reluctantbrit · 20/08/2024 20:44

I love my kindle, I have a Paperwhite. I think the next offer will be Black Friday end of November.

I do have the kindle app as well but dislike it for more than a short read if I only have my phone and not my bag with me. The screen is not easy to read, too small and a tablet is too heavy, the kindle is the perfect solution for me.

But, you can try the app first or as other PP said, see if you local library does e-book lending, get the app and try it out. Libary borrowing doesn't work with kindles though.

Alternatively look up the Kobo reader. Works like the kindle, the difference is that you can use their Kobo+ instead of Kindle unlimited and you have a wider range of books available. KU is exclusive and does not allow authors to sell on other platforms.
I think they also support the library app (depending on th app your library uses).

In my humble opinion a single-purpose e-reader is much MORE valuable than a tablet.

E ink screens are much much nicer to read, and give you a devoted reading function. I spend far too much time farting around with apps and doom scrolling as it is.

PhilsMajicHat · 20/08/2024 21:28

Kindles are superb for reading in bed when it’s cold, you snuggle right down. Also very good of you are a side laying reader like me. I have kindle unlimited and read 2 or 3 books a week, so get my moneys worth. You also get audiobooks with unlimited

BraveMaeve · 20/08/2024 21:45

I bought a second hand one from Ebay for £35 - I was a bit sceptical about Kindles and thought I'd try it and get a new one if I liked it. But the second hand one is brilliant and I'm really happy with it, there was no need to get a new one.

prescribingmum · 20/08/2024 21:50

I have one from 2012 which still works and I use occasionally but most of my reading is library book (since having children, I have rediscovered the local library and visit constantly!). It is expensive to me when I can get most things I want to read for free from the library. I am toying with a Kobo because of the BorrowBox compatibility a PP mentioned

Moier · 20/08/2024 21:52

Worth every penny.
Reading is my passion.
I have kindle unlimited too.. saves me loads of cash.

Bjorkdidit · 20/08/2024 21:53

OP look on ebay, there's loads of second hand ones for not very much.

I was going to sell my old Paperwhite when I got a new waterproof one but when I realised I'd probably only get £10/20 for it I decided to just keep it as a spare.

2chocolateoranges · 20/08/2024 22:16

Dh bought me a kindle paper white last year for my birthday, it’s one of the smaller ones but I love it, perfect to hold, I can read it no bother and best of all I can read it in the dark, while in bed. I’m sure it was approx £80

Wombbaalaa · 20/08/2024 22:23

Worth it but equally I enjoy the kindle app on my phone too. Books on kindle are cheap but I also like kindle unlimited for classics etc.

FussyPud · 20/08/2024 22:25

My kindle was about £40 in CEX, it has been hammered, and is still trucking. I don’t enjoy reading on a phone/tablet screen, and prefer the ease of a very light item in my bag, rather than a couple of books.

I’m dreading this one dying, as it’s one that has the haptic buttons on the sides, and the newer paperwhite style kindles don’t have those from what I can see.

I may have to look into a backup!

BadlydoneHelen · 20/08/2024 22:29

I'm surprised that so many people are suggesting borrowing ebooks from the library. My area uses BorrowBox and it never seems to have anything other than 'supermarket' books and most of those have such long waiting lists that it could be 6-9 months before you get the title you want.

outdamnedspots · 20/08/2024 22:31

God, they are so worth the money, but then I use mine every single day. If you don't read much, then maybe not.

Jellycatspyjamas · 20/08/2024 22:31

I disagree, my kindle is lighter than a tablet, fits in my bag more easily, I don’t get tempted to scroll online, easy to read in bed, doesn’t give off blue light. I love mine, cost per use is pennies and my last one I used for 10 years before the battery started to not hold its charge. I’ve replaced my tablet twice in that time.

5NightsAtFreddies · 20/08/2024 22:33

Cost per use it is probably the cheapest item that I own.

it is so nice to have something where I can’t automatically open other apps and doom scroll. I read so much faster too.

And if you sign up to Bookbub they send you free and cheap deals every day for kindle books.

StrawberryKebab · 20/08/2024 22:33

Just buy amazon tablet ( they’re cheaper!)and use the kindle app with Amazon unlimited -think it’s about £8 a month and hundreds of free books. Or there’s a free app through your library details all books are free -it’s called borrow box

I was going to say this. I’ve got a Kobo and get most of my books from the library.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/08/2024 22:40

I love my kindle. Worth every penny. I read several books a month, and take my Kindle everywhere I go

I've got Libby, Borrowbox and cloudLibrary. All of which my library is signed up with.

Between the 3 of them the waiting lists are either months long, there's hardly any books on there anyway, and one of them I can't even find English books. Just Polish and Ukrainian. No idea why!
