Help! Airline has lost student DD's suitcase!

DD age 21 set off to Sweden today for a year at uni there and BA has left one of her cases behind! She has reported at the airport and they have said they will be in touch. Is there anything I can do at this end to speed things up? I've tried phoning BA but they weren't very helpful. Their website seems to suggest they won't escalate until 72 hours after first report.

It happens quite often so they barely bag an eyelid

She will get it back eventually I'm sure

Shockhorror22 · 20/08/2024 17:47

Thanks - that was the impression I got! I hope it does turn up soon - it's got all her clothes . . .

This happened to me with BA and it was delivered to the door

Oh good! She's living quite a long way from the airport, so that would make a big difference - thank you Lelivre

Yes they’ll deliver it to her address.

if she needs stuff in the meantime her insurance should cover it. Or it’s worth asking BA if they have an allowance for a couple of days worth of clothes- I’ve never needed it as the case was lost on the return leg, but I have a friend who I think got costs paid.

did she AirTag it?

Shockhorror22 · 20/08/2024 17:54

Allthegoodnamesaretaken92 Brilliant! Of course, her insurance - I'd forgotten all about that! I'll check the terms right away.

happened to me a few times.
shortest was next day, longest 3 weeks.

all delivered directly to me.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 20/08/2024 17:55

It should turn up at her door within a day, fingers crossed! I think it's normally on the next flight to that airport, so unless she is somewhere where they only fly once a week she shouldn't have to wait too long. Hopefully she did sensible things like make sure she had her name and phone number inside the bag?

JollyHostess101 · 20/08/2024 17:57

Ex Ba Staff here- it’ll turn up and be sent over and couriered to her address! The website to tag knit can be a bit glitchy but she should get info when it’s with the courier!

Reasonable expenses to cover missing essentials (don’t go buying designer)

It happens a lot and rarely are things lost for good!

MrsHamlet · 20/08/2024 17:58

My bag got missed off my flight this summer - it took 2 days to get the right country.
I claimed from the airline for the items I had to buy, and they paid without quibble.

Shockhorror22 · 20/08/2024 18:01

Thank you all so much - that's very reassuring. And yes, her insurance will give her £75 if her bag's more than 12 hours late and she's covered for up to £2,000 if it's completely lost. I'm feeling much better now!

This happened to my daughter in June with BA. It took them 4 days to deliver it direct to the hotel, but they were travelling home on the 5th day 🙄 On the plus side, BA reimbursed £120 euros of stuff she had to buy due to not having anything with her. They had paid her within a week of her return home. Won't use BA again though. That was her first holiday with friends ruined.

PinkTulipz · 20/08/2024 18:04

Happened to us last week, also with BA. I got told 3 times it was on a flight when it wasn't, but it did eventually turn up on our doorstep, took 7 days

Shockhorror22 · 20/08/2024 18:08

dahliadiva sorry to hear that - great that she got her stuff back and BA covered her expenses, but some things there is no compensation for, is there?
PinkTulipz oh boy, it's just exhausting, isn't it?

This happened to dsis. The suitcase wasn't put on the plane and was delivered back to her home address (not the location she was heading for). Thankfully it was only a 10 day holiday and her neighbours took her case in for her.

Shockhorror22 · 20/08/2024 18:11

RosieFlamingo How frustrating for her! Hope that doesn't happen this time.

It’s usually as @JollyHostess101 describes.

I’ve had it happen to me with BA a handful of times (have to emphasise really not their fault, just a consequence of the ticket type I was travelling on) and on every occasion suitcase was couriered to our house in the middle of nowhere, 70 km from the airport, the next day.

Shockhorror22 · 20/08/2024 18:23

RosieFlamingo That's pretty good though I think you're being very understanding about them losing it in the first place!

Happened to me years ago and the airline reimbursed me for clothes and toiletries. It eventually turned up at my hotel 4 days later. Both my boss at home and the manager of where I was working were pushing the airline to get it to me. I now always split contents across cases when we travel as a family (obviously couldn't on a business trip) and have AirTags in each case too.

Doesn’t just happen with BA though. And likely not down to BA anyway, but with the airport baggage handling - which includes all airlines.

at least they paid up promptly for expenses for something that was probably out of their control.

MrsHamlet · 20/08/2024 20:32

Mine wasn't BA either, and it probably wasn't the fault of the airline really - a short transfer with a delayed inbound flight was what did it. I made the flight... just... the bag didn't.

dahliadiva · 20/08/2024 22:24

Yeah I know it's not really down to BA I suppose 🙂 it really pissed me off at the time though, especially since we had saved for a while for that trip for her. When I book family holidays I always use Jet2, they never lose my bags! (Hope I haven't jinxed that now!)

mellowfell · 20/08/2024 23:10

Mine disappeared. Normally if they know where it is, they will deliver it within 3 days but in my case BA couldn't find it. I've had both airports check through their ground services and it's either disappeared somewhere else or stolen from the carousel.

YellowAsteroid · 21/08/2024 00:18

She'll survive. Unlike a couple of colleagues of mine - pone of whom lost entire shipping crates of personal effects moving to the UK to take up a lectureship (including heirloom jewellery and family photos) and another whose airline lost her suitcase permanently - it had the entire typescript of her PhD in it (in the days before laptops).

Both lost these things permanently.

theduchessofspork · 21/08/2024 00:20

It will usually pitch up within the week.
