Hand-wash when having an extremely eczema breakout?

GhibliCat · 17/08/2024 16:40

I need to wash my hands after the toilet but I can't use my normal bar or pump soap.

What can I buy that will allow me to keep my hands clean and pain free please?

Diprobase?

FunLurker · 17/08/2024 16:43

Doctors can prescribe a antibacterial wash, think it's classed as a scrub

Hibiscrub perhaps?

Blueberries7 · 17/08/2024 17:00

I have pompholyx eczema on my hands, you can buy a wash or just use emollient you get in a general chemist.
I like this one: www.chemist-4-u.com/qv-gentle-wash-500ml

I don't feel clean with just that so sometimes use alcohol gel on the bits that aren't sore.
Lots of emollient in-between helps too

Second Hibiscrub or similar - look at the ingredients and see if cheaper alternatives exist with the same ingredients.

WickieRoy · 17/08/2024 17:07

We use Dermol.

Ponderingwindow · 17/08/2024 17:09

What makes your eczema flare in the first place? That should guide your soap choice.

i wouldn’t use hibiscrub because it contains fragrance, which irritates most eczema, even if you don’t have an allergy.

I have no idea, at the moment, everything

Hibiscrub is harsh!

Shesellsseashellsontheseasure · 17/08/2024 17:14

Dermol do a hand wash which the doc recommended when mine was really bad. I now use Waitrose unscented hand wash as I'm allergic to linalool which is in most soaps

FelicityBeedle · 17/08/2024 17:14

Dermol lotion is what my colleagues with eczema use at work (hospital) it’s a lotion but works as a hand wash. The stuff in the green bottle, not sure if it’s prescription. But it’s very gentle

Trallers · 17/08/2024 17:19

Yikes, don't use hibiscrub on sore skin unless you've been advised to by a doctor.

Could you go for a different tactic and use washing up gloves for a trip to the toilet? Then you wash hands with soap while wearing them in order to clean them for next time. Disposable ones when out and about.

Not a long term solution as you obviously do need a suitable soap too, but decreasing the number of washings may help a lot.

IOnlyNeedTheSilence · 17/08/2024 17:23

E45 do a shower cream that's very gentle, maybe use that as handwash.

GhibliCat · 17/08/2024 17:40

I've posted under another name about this but this is my hand currently

And my left hand has pompholyx spots on my fingers

I'm using gloves but have to use cotton gloves underneath as the rubber gloves are making my hands sweaty and worse.

Epaderm, aveno, dermol, doublebase all do washes it might be a case of trial and error see what helps.
It might be worth sending some pictures to the gp as you may also need some steroid cream as well.

They also have a “wash cream” that has a pump. My housemate used it when he had really bad eczema on his hands

Saucery · 17/08/2024 17:57

Simple handwash (the clear one) is gentle on my hands when my eczema flares up (usually in response to having to use evil Carex).

acquiescence · 17/08/2024 17:58

My son has severe eczema and hands are a bad spot. He has QV gentle wash prescribed by dermatology.

I'm a chronic sufferer too.thanks for the tip.

Alevelnamechange · 17/08/2024 18:00

I use am emollient like Diprobase, Dermol, or E45 to wash my hands when they're in full flare up mode. Never anything that bubbles.

StormingNorman · 17/08/2024 18:00

Another vote for E45 shower cream. It’s a few seconds of instant relief for me when it goes on the eczema.

Aqueous cream can also be used as a hand and body wash.

I hope it calms down soon. It looks angry x
