Lurpak

StarvingMarvin222 · 17/08/2024 13:58

I bought Lurpak in Iceland the other day.
I've never had it before.
I'm from Dublin.

Can I ask why does everyone rave about it.
I found it very meh.

northern europe butter (like lurpak) is made from soured milk.
in other areas fresh milk is used.

depends on your tastebuds what you prefer...

LittleYellowCloth · 17/08/2024 14:49

I can’t stomach the rich, sickly (to me) taste of all the yellow butters you're raving about, so the mild flavour of Lurpak is my preference.

Peonies12 · 17/08/2024 14:51

Use real butter, leave it out. All those spreads are full of rubbish

Lurpak spread isn't.

Cookerhood · 17/08/2024 15:01

Why did everyone assume the OP was talking about spread? It may have been a block of Lurpak.
Yellow proper butter here, preferably with salt crystals in it

WappityWabbit · 17/08/2024 15:07

@BobbyBiscuits

Nope, the 99's are still huge. 😋

This. Surely if the OP was talking about spread in a tub instead of a brand of butter then she'd have said. But then a lot of people do try to pass off fake butter as actual butter so who knows?

Lurpak used to be the fancy butter, but there's so many more different types now so it seems a bit ordinary.

Did you buy it in Dublin? I adore Lurpak but can't find any shops that sell it in Dublin... I didn't think there were any Icelands here

No I bought it in Newry, your right there's no Iceland in the Republic

I bought the spreadable one.
I seen it in the fridge and bought it.
On TikTok if anyone uses it there always asked how can they afford it,so at that price I was expecting something a little bit nicer.

I buy kerrygold but I also like the French president one in a dome with all the salt crystals in

Lurpak like you say is meh

Real butter is nicer and cheaper. I don't understand why people buy Lurpak spreadable, especially in summer.

Cookerhood · 17/08/2024 15:44

It's Butter (62%) (MILK), rapeseed oil, water, lactic culture (MILK), salt.
Honestly proper butter (Lurpak or otherwise) is much nicer & keeps for ages in a butter dish & is lovely & spreadable. Not so much in the winter though! It's probably cheaper too.

The president one in the dome is my fave. It’s a bit hit and miss in my local Waitrose though. The issigny (?) in the gold tube is nice too!

Because most people keep butter in the fridge these days.

Bjorkdidit · 17/08/2024 15:53

But why? It doesn't need to go in the fridge.

People pay more for something that's worse quality so they can keep something that doesn't need to go in the fridge, in the fridge?

Are they quite mad?

My butter is out in a butter dish all the time

starfishmummy · 17/08/2024 16:05

Depends what you want. I want to taste my sandwich fillings, toast spreads etc so lurpak doesn't overwhelm.

LadyPenelope68 · 17/08/2024 16:06

revolting stuff, no better than margarine IMO. Proper block butter is the only thing we use, keep in a covered butter dish and it’s absolutely fine for ages. Best block butter is M&S salted.

Those are the ingredients of the spreadable version.

The ingredients of the block version are:

  • Butter
  • Lactic Culture
  • Salt (for the slightly salted version)

Lurpak is a lactic butter, hence the slightly sour taste. Salted butters like Anchor are a sweetcream butter. They do taste very different.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 17/08/2024 16:09

Davros · 17/08/2024 14:10

It's nothing special. You can get much better butter in M&S

The Cornish Salted block? That stuff is incredible!

BIWI · 17/08/2024 16:10

You can tell which is which - lactic butters are usually wrapped in silver foil/silver-coloured packaging; sweeetcream butters are usually wrapped in gold foil or creamy paper.

StarvingMarvin222 · 17/08/2024 16:10

I've satisfied my curiosity so I won't buy it again.

i use their bog standard salted for daily use, but the Cornish stuff for occasions. Both better than any other brand.

The Cornish stuff is our "best butter" as my Granny used to call a block of butter.
