Decided to try my chances with the omaze million pound house draw.

Some ppl actually won a house for a £10 entry. I know its a very slim chance, but even a cash prize would be good for me. I would love the house near Pickering. I could rent out the stables etc.

There's a reason these houses are put into a raffle draw. I'll give you a clue, they are unsaleable.

Hotfeetcoldfeet · 16/08/2024 22:00

Why are they unsalable? They always look amazing!

BorgQueen · 16/08/2024 22:02

It’s rigged, potential winners are ‘vetted’ and every house won has been sold as all of them have some kind of issue

smallsilvercloud · 16/08/2024 22:03

I'd love to win a house, even if I sold it for far less than it's supposed to be worth, it's still more than I have now.
Although I'd be devastated to win a flashy car lol can't stand them, I wonder if there's a cash alternative.

MajesticWhine · 16/08/2024 22:05

I want one. I can’t resist buying tickets.

But who would then buy an "unsellable house" in that case?

Yep, some have been on flood plains, and I believe the Cornwall one that is the prize right now will be in the sea within a decade (is near a cliff edge).

Well they're not unsaleable are they. They're just not going to sell for the price the owner wants for them. Take the Pickering house, which is supposed to be worth £2.5 million. The average person winning that house would still be substantially better off if they sold it for half that amount, or even less.

dawngreen · 16/08/2024 22:14

I get what you are saying about erosion, and some problems. But they still could rent out places. And the cash prizes would improve my life.

Orchards and stables with land I would live in one part, and rent the other.

This is my favourite of the Omaze houses. Usually, they have odd layouts or something else strange about them.

I wonder how much of an income you could make by renting out the stables and tack room etc to a riding business?

OooohAhhhh · 17/08/2024 09:28

I have had a £10 subscription for around 6 months now, gets me 60 entries every draw. Hoping one day it will be me 😃

'E' energy rating is a worry for a house in such good nick.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 17/08/2024 11:32

How are potential winners vetted? Surely omaze are bound by legal rules around fairness in lottery style competitions?

usernother · 17/08/2024 11:36

The terraced house in London wasn't odd. It was lush. That's the only one I entered but gave up after that.

It's in their T&C's - they don't run credit checks as they aren't allowed to do that - however they do ID and eligibility checks on the winner before announcing it.

dawngreen · 17/08/2024 12:33

The costs to actually live there would be a lot but if I could make an income from renting, and using some of the land too it would be good. Besides I would ask around the locals see if they knew of any issues. But even if I sold it I would still be better off than I am now. Malton/Pickering I loved staying in those area's when younger.

Not true. The recent Surrey house is near me and I know there were at least two other bidders, but Omaze have a bottomless fund really, so can always ‘gazzump’. The houses are difficult to get a quick sale on, though, as there are only a small number of people in the market to buy properties of £2-4m, so they tend to be picky and take their time.

The vetting isn’t what people think - it’s to ensure the winner has no remote connection to any person working for Omaze, it’s subsidiaries or the charity, so that at no point can it be inferred that there was fraud or any other impropriety involved. It’s for legal/compliance purposes.

For PR purposes, I suspect they also want to be sure that Fred & Rose West or Gary Glitter don’t win.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 26/08/2024 14:35

Ooh, that house is just up the road from me!

It's quite remote - you've got a good 20 mile drive to the nearest sizeable town. I think there's a bridleway that runs through some of the fields too.

Mindymomo · 26/08/2024 14:36

I entered the draw for the Somerset House, but haven’t entered since. Yes, I believe these houses are difficult to sell, due to price, location and size. I do wonder if more people would enter if the top prizes were 6 houses worth £500,000.

TheClawDecides · 26/08/2024 14:36

I always look at them and wonder who could afford the window cleaner? 😳🤣

Definitely the case for the current one - I get my windows done every 4-6 weeks but am not sure weekly would cut it in the winter with those glass railing/balustrades (don’t know what they’re called!)
