Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee were the best, Matt Smith was dreadful

ZippyDenimBear · 14/08/2024 21:02

Christopher Eccleston

What a shame he didn't do more!

daffodilandtulip · 14/08/2024 21:08

Sylvester McCoy from the old days. David Tennant from the new.

Tom Baker!

Jon Pertwee was Dr Who when I was growing up, and as far as I was always concerned, he was THE Dr Who. I was never going to be swayed on that opinion.

And then along came David Tennant. 😂

Mathsbabe · 14/08/2024 21:21

Tom Baker

BiggerBoat1 · 14/08/2024 21:25

@invisiblecat I met Jon Pertwee and he was the loveliest, most humble man. I was seriously fan-girling.

Lou16777 · 14/08/2024 21:39

Toss up between David Tennant and Matt Smith!

John Pertwee FTW!

Same here!

ThisHangryPinkBalonz · 15/08/2024 03:30

Christopher Ecclestone for me.

Happyinarcon · 15/08/2024 03:32

Christopher Ecclestone, although that was when it became painfully obvious that I was now an adult watching a show I loved as a kid

I never saw many of PT's series - I grew up in the JP/TB era - but those few I've seen (plus his appearance in The Three Doctors and The Five Doctors) I liked very much. Pertwee is still my favourite. Matt Smith I couldn't stand, partly for the lack of eyebrows, partly because I went right off the series with his stories.

I notice nobody's even mentioned Colin Baker! 😄

Turophilic · 15/08/2024 03:39

Tom Baker in the original

Christopher Eccleston (there is no E on the end of his surname!) in the reboot

I loved 10, but bringing him back was just stupid and undermined the original run.

Worst companions were Clara and Martha. Rose, Bill, Donna and the Ponds were great.

I’m drawing a polite veil across poor Jodie’s time. She deserved better writing.

MissTrip82 · 15/08/2024 04:04

Classic: Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee
New: Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi

I loved how well Matt Smith played someone ancient with a young face.

I like them all though really. I always worry about the new doctor then like them.

Companions: Sarah Jane, Ace, Donna, Bill.

At an LGBTQ award ceremony, Tennant said that he wanted Badenoch to shut up and not exist, he also said that he didn't wish her any harm. Because of that, he apparently foams at the mouth incandescent with rage against women. I'd also like her to shut up so I guess I'm a raving misogynist too.

She's my MP and I would also like her to shut up. So I guess that's me in that club too. I'm just hoping now that she doesn't become the next Conservative leader. She has thrown her hat into the ring. Then we'll never hear the last of it.

I was kinda with David Tennant on that although he perhaps went a little bit too far. No worries though as there's zero chance of Kemi Badenoch ever shutting up.

He didn't stop at saying he wanted her to shut up. He said he looked forward to a world in which she doesn't exist.

VashtaNerada · 15/08/2024 04:37

so angry that they made the female doctor so bloody wet.
Interesting! I would never describe her Doctor that way. She’s born out of Twelve’s optimism and sweetness, but she very quickly becomes darker and harder. I found her quite cold compared to the some of the previous ones. I quite liked her for that reason; she felt more obviously alien and you could see that the whole “brilliant” and “fam” stuff was very much a facade. She cuts out her companions all the time and there’s no entertaining of a romantic relationship at all.
My favourite Doctor changes all the time - each brings something different and important to his character. It’s probably Twelve at the moment but I really do have a soft spot for all of them.

DrRiverSong · 15/08/2024 06:58

I’ve just rewatched from Ecclestone to now and the one I loved the most was Matt Smith. So much range.

Although I’ve gone from a Doctor Who binge to a House of the Dragon binge and am feeling a little conflicted now.

DrRiverSong · 15/08/2024 07:02

I’m with you @VashtaNerada I liked Jodie. She played it differently and was just her. It worked well for me.

The old series are available on iPlayer. I wasn't born during the time of the early doctors, but watched them all on iPlayer!

Indeed.

Sjahd · 15/08/2024 08:35

I always used to think that the actors who played "the Doctor" were kind hearted souls irl.

I did say he went slightly too far, but I still have no problems with his sentiments and really don't care what anyone thinks of me for that.

Uricon2 · 15/08/2024 08:54

Classic -Dr Pertwee (the "main" one of my childhood) Real presence.

Reboot - Dr Eccleston. The scene where he was faced with the chained Dalek and basically panicked, because of what he'd been through, was brilliant acting. He managed the grumpy/funny/commanding dynamic well and I wish he'd done more.

Cantysaurus18 · 15/08/2024 09:42

Christopher Eccleston is my Doctor. I wish he had done more on the tv series but glad he is doing some audio adventures now.
It took me a while to adjust to David Tennant but he was at his best with Donna in series 4 imo
