Advanced Excel Skills

At my work we are looking for someone with advanced excel skills, the job is in London, it's with a great company, six month full time contract, the pay is okay, but we have only had one suitable applicant. I'm always hearing about people looking for jobs and not getting anywhere but where are these people looking? I'm somewhat baffled.

It's the 6 month contract that's putting people off.

mummymummymummummum · 14/08/2024 15:11

I have advanced Excel skills. I wouldn’t apply for a 6 month contract on okay pay.

NorthNineteen · 14/08/2024 15:12

Really I thought everything was contracts these days...

I wouldn't quit a permanent job for
a 6 month contract even if it paid more

BrownBirdWelcomesWhiteWave · 14/08/2024 15:13

I have advanced excel skills - what is your "ok pay"

Fantosia · 14/08/2024 15:14

Six months contract unlikely to appeal to many. 18 months minimum for me to quit a job with security, and that would be for excellent pay and potential development opportunities

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 14/08/2024 15:14

In my experience contract work needs to come with a higher salary to recognise that the worker may need a bit of time after to find their next role.

NorthNineteen · 14/08/2024 15:14

I think it's £160 a day

OP posts:
Notmushroomforthis · 14/08/2024 15:15

So £20ph which isn't ok pay. £40k per year. What's the actual job? That's awful for a contractor.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 14/08/2024 15:15

NorthNineteen · 14/08/2024 15:14

What's the actual job? This is a low salary for contract work once tax/NI/pension has been accounted for.

Violetparis · 14/08/2024 15:15

Not sure what the role is in your company but younger people in my work use other systems like R, Python, Tableau etc rather than excel for more advanced data tasks. They would think a requirement for advanced skills is dated.

Are you serious?

For a contract - christ I wouldnt consider it for double that!

loropianalover · 14/08/2024 15:16

NorthNineteen · 14/08/2024 15:14

I think it's £160 a day

So roughly £20ph for ADVANCED excel skills and you can only offer a 6 month contract?

The rate needs to be higher to reflect both the level of skill needed and the short term (6 months) offered.

Editing to say I don’t know any contractors that work for below 45/50GBP an hour…

NorthNineteen · 14/08/2024 15:16

Interesting, it isn't a financial role

OP posts:
TeenToTwenties · 14/08/2024 15:17

£160 is far far too low for that work surely?
My 19yo doesn't have a GCSE pass to her name but gets £100 / day for her casual work.

NorthNineteen · 14/08/2024 15:16

What is the role?
If it's a data analyst it's grossly underpaid, if it's a data entry clerk you may get away with it.

TokyoSushi · 14/08/2024 15:19

6 month contract at £160 per day, nope, not appealing at all!

NorthNineteen · 14/08/2024 15:21

I'm not posting the role. It is not a data analyst role, nor data entry it is a very different sort of role to these and the company is well known and respected does regular benchmarking on salaries.

It is massively flexible and work from home too.

StMarieforme · 14/08/2024 15:23

OP you asked why you've only b had 1 applicant. Many people have told you. You're not listening.

loropianalover · 14/08/2024 15:24

NorthNineteen · 14/08/2024 15:22

That doesn’t pay the bills, OP.

NorthNineteen · 14/08/2024 15:25

Okay fine, I've got the answer.

OP posts:
keylimedog · 14/08/2024 15:25

Are you on a fixed term contract then?

£160 a day for contracting isn't a hugely interesting rate, especially for a 6mth contract. Could be hugely underpaid too depending on the role, but you're not posting that info. If you want advanced skills and a wide circle of applications you need to advertise well / pay well / make it attractive.

Singleandproud · 14/08/2024 15:27

For a six months role you'd be better off sending a current employee on an Excel course, upping their CPD and getting the job done. Backfilling the lower role with agency staff

DreadPirateRobots · 14/08/2024 15:27

If your job was so great with great pay, you'd have more applicants.

That's a shitty wage for contracting; people go into contracting because they have advanced tech skills (not Excel) and they can make more that way.
