I'm working all over Christmas again ....

chickendancee · 12/08/2024 11:50

Last year I started working at a convenience shop.
I obviously knew I would work some bank holidays but last year was
Christmas Eve 1pm-11.30pm
Christmas Day 1pm -11pm
Boxing Day 1pm -11pm
Nye 2-11.30
Nyd 12-10

He has told me it's the same this year
I'm really sad about it tbh
It's just me in the shop and it's obviously min wage.
I don't know if I'm being unreasonable feeling like this
Would you ?

Look for another job?

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 12/08/2024 11:51

That is really rough. You only option is to look for work elsewhere. You have retail experience which should help you find something else.

Mumof1andacat · 12/08/2024 11:51

Are there other members of staff not just the owners?

I would be looking for another job. Maybe in a supermarket ?

CruCru · 12/08/2024 11:52

Are you the only employee? If there is someone else who has magically managed to get all of Christmas / NY off then you are probably being short changed.

MiseryIn · 12/08/2024 11:52

Are you the only member of staff? I suppose it's to be expected if you are.
Do you at least get double time?

BendingSpoons · 12/08/2024 11:53

Those are pretty rubbish hours. Does your boss also work in the shop normally? Presumably they don't want to work the rubbish shifts over Christmas. I would probably look for another job. I understand having to work some antisocial hours, but you are missing out on most of Christmas/New Year there.

Octarion · 12/08/2024 11:54

I would not do this. There are thousands of alternatives. Also the owner is disgusting and greedy for not just closing the shop.

Wontletmeusemynormalname · 12/08/2024 11:55

Have you tried saying no. Easier said than done I know.i would definitely be looking for another job.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 12/08/2024 11:56

I would look for another job. At least with a supermarket job, you won’t be working the 25th and your shifts like likely to be a bit shorter on the other days.

JaffavsCookie · 12/08/2024 11:57

As others said, are you the only employee? If not then those hours are shockers. Either way tbh I would be after a different job.

LookItsMeAgain · 12/08/2024 12:00

That would be a "Hell no I'm not!" from me.

You compromise this year and say that you'll work one but not both holidays. So, it's either Christmas day (not Boxing day, just Christmas Day) or New Year's Day (not NYE either).
They can decide to open on the other days or not - but you'll not be there.

Then I'd do as @Misthios suggested and look for another job!

This.

chickendancee · 12/08/2024 12:02

Yeah me and owners and their family members
They don't want to work it so it's on me
I'm applying for other jobs as we speak
I have retail /admin experience
I'm hoping for a miracle

Even if you were to quit this job and get a job in a supermarket or clothing store in the run up to Christmas, if you have the experience, you could be lucky and actually get kept on for the post Christmas rush (when all the returns are usually done).
Either way, you'd still probably get Christmas or New Year's Day off or both!

Ellie1015 · 12/08/2024 12:10

That is awful they are leaving it all to you.

I would have expected early close on Christmas eve and closed or very limited hours on Christmas day as well as the owners and their family taking a turn.

Job hunting is a great idea, good luck.

reallifeboogie · 12/08/2024 12:18

It's shit that it's not being shared between other people but as someone who works in a 365 24/7 job, who works every single Christmas day, I don't see the issue with working Christmas day. It's just a day. Like any other day. Just get on with it.

Sugargliderwombat · 12/08/2024 12:24

They should be closing Christmas day. You should call in sick!

Flossflower · 12/08/2024 12:25

What are your usual hours?
If you are being asked to work on times/days when you don’t usually work I would complain.
I would be job hunting

littlegrebe · 12/08/2024 12:26

I think you should look for another job - it is a bloody cheek to expect someone to work on Christmas Day for minimum wage. You've got 4 months to find one and the longer it takes you, the less time he's got to find someone else to cover it.

Some people enjoy Christmas. The OP isn't going to be saving lives if she works this shift, just making money for a stingy git who'll be sitting at home having a lovely time at her expense.

Ladyandherspaniel · 12/08/2024 12:30

I always moan about my rota but that takes the absolute biscuit. I would wait til a few days before then hand in my notice from immediate effect. No way would I work those shifts. You've gotta have a decent work/ home life balance and that doesn't give you either. That's so so unfair. OK If you was working in a hospital, i would get it, but you're not!
You need a life too.

Mrsttcno1 · 12/08/2024 12:31

I would hate this, when at uni I worked in a job where I sometimes had to work Christmas Day etc but it was rotated between staff. As an adult and especially now I have a child I wouldn’t take a job that required this.

loropianalover · 12/08/2024 12:34

You’ve got loads of time - send your CV to recruitment agencies and say you’re open to temp office work, apply for civil service/local government clerical roles. Apply for retail or supermarket work, or even a line job in a factory.

You will absolutely find something else. Unfortunately some jobs just have crap shifts like this but I think it’s unfair to be expected to do both Xmas and NY holidays. It should be one or the other, and since you did them last year, it should be neither.

MonsteraMama · 12/08/2024 12:36

Definitely look for another job, in a bigger chain store or supermarket which will be shut on Christmas day so you'll at least get that off even if you have to work the rest.

You've got time to get one and get out of there before Christmas! Bugger his family if they don't want to work, that's not your problem. If it's their business they can just shut the stupid shop for the day.
