Last year I started working at a convenience shop.
I obviously knew I would work some bank holidays but last year was
Christmas Eve 1pm-11.30pm
Christmas Day 1pm -11pm
Boxing Day 1pm -11pm
Nye 2-11.30
Nyd 12-10

He has told me it's the same this year
I'm really sad about it tbh
It's just me in the shop and it's obviously min wage.
I don't know if I'm being unreasonable feeling like this
Would you ?

For forcing their only employee to work all of it and none of it themselves? Hardly an act of charity is it.

Presumably you have holiday to use? Resign so that your notice takes you up to a week before Christmas, they have to pay you for holiday not taken. Start new job in Jan.

CeeJay81 · 12/08/2024 17:19

Def leave. I'm sure you'll be able to find another retail job by them. Even our local spar is only open a few hours on Xmas day. Look for a job at one of the supermarkets? Never open xmas day and boxing day(if they are open) and new years day are extra money, you usually only have to work 1 or the other too. I work for coop and management are fairly good at making it fair for everyone.

It's shit that it's not being shared between other people but as someone who works in a 365 24/7 job, who works every single Christmas day, I don't see the issue with working Christmas day. It's just a day. Like any other day. Just get on with it.

What a silly thing to say. You must live under a rock if you think Christmas Day is a day just like any other day to most people.

@blueblueskiesandacloud Im thinking the poster is a farmer.

kittybiscuits · 12/08/2024 17:29

Don't give them a minute's more notice that required when you get your new job and hand in your notice to these horrible people, OP 😊

roseymoira · 12/08/2024 17:35

If you don't get a new job in time then call in sick, the nasty people don't deserve any consideration

They do here in Ireland until about 12 pm, they make an absolute fortune too.

People forget batteries for new toys, cream, even the turkey or forget to take it out of the freezer in time. The staff would get overtime and no one would be expected to work all the day outlined in the OP.

I remember when all shops closed early on Christmas Eve and stayed close for a week, retail workers must be exhausted all over the festive period with all the extended hours now.

Look for something else, OP, then give your notice.

Forgetting something is tuff shit. Christmas aint ruined if someone forgets batteries FFS.

good luck OP in finding a new job.

Or JW.

Major supermarkets will start looking for new staff now, as the youngsters go off to Uni and other persuits. With Halloween and Christmas coming they will need extra staff.

Get yourself on the Tescos, Sainsbury’s, Asda websites, not forgetting Aldi and Lidl. Start applying right now. I bet you will be snapped up. You will probably have to work part of Christmas but you will definatly get Christmas Day off. Most supermarkets shut early on Boxing Day. You would probably get one of these shifts but they won’t be shitty ones like you have been given and the staff are always treated well.

Good luck OP.

Normally I get 2
30 mins when the owners or family are in

At bank holidays I just eat at the counter
If I need to pop to the loo I just close for 5 mins and re open again

So they are breaking the law then. It is all very well for family-run businesses to have family members work whatever hours they want, but they cannot expect it of employees.

Please do your best to find another job.

Calm down, if you read my full post you'd realise I don't agree with shops being open.

But it’s not is it? And I am betting you’re not on minimum wage in your chosen “365 24/7” job are you?

No I'm on 1.5% more.

I'm a care worker in a care home.

itsgettingweird · 12/08/2024 19:48

That is shit.

My local convenience store does (luckily as I've needed them in an emergency!) open xmas day and NYD.

The shop is owned by a family who don't celebrate Christmas for religious reasons. They work those shifts and allow their staff who do celebrate to be off.

I have so much respect for them doing this.

I agree about looking for work. Xmas jobs start being advertised about now. If you don't find an alternative you can always quit with your notice before then as long as you don't need the money - and continue looking.

Of course there are many jobs where people do work these shifts such as health and care. But you know this when you start working for them. It's unusual to work xmas day in retail.
