Will her baby curls stay?

So my DD is 17 months old and has very cute, very blonde, curly ish hair. Her curls are at the ends of her hair and I worry that when I eventually have her hair cut, that'll be the end of them. Do you think they'll last or are they an 'enjoy for now' feature?

The first photo was from Christmas and the second was this morning

My DS had a head full of blonde curls when he was little, but it’s poker straight now.

TeddyBeans · 12/08/2024 08:21

@DustyLee123 oh bless 🥰 do you miss the curls?

They probably won't stay tbh.

In my personal experience with mine they don’t stay, which is okay, as then you just move onto another phase which is just as beautiful just different.

My daughters did, she now has very tight ringlet curls, she didn't have any hair till she was 2 then it came in abundance!! No doubt she will hate it when she's older though

GettingStuffed · 12/08/2024 08:27

DD and DS2 had very blonde curls. They both have wavy hair that's between dark blonde and light brown.

Spin4Gin · 12/08/2024 08:29

My daughter had blonde baby curls and when her hair got too long we got it trimmed and it was so much better once they were off. Way less tangles and it sat much nicer. But that was the end of the curls, she has wavy hair now. But honestly, looks way better after a trim. Someone explained to me that it's not real hair and it is good to trim it to maintain healthy hair.

Zooeyzebra · 12/08/2024 08:29

My son had similar lovely baby curls, then his hair did go straight, then around tween he started to go curly again and as a teenager he has very springy ringlets. Hair is a mystery to me, mine is extremely straight

WoopsLiza · 12/08/2024 08:33

They are unlikely to stay, but you won't give a shit, OP, because you will just adore every inch of her as she grows. You'll be obsessed with other details. Your post reminded me that my little girl had a mass of wispy curls and now she doesnt. I adored rhe curls but adore her now so much I hadn't even really noticed their loss

mondaytosunday · 12/08/2024 08:33

My DD had curly hair when young. After primary though it got straighter and is now wavy rather than curly - though it's waist length and very thick so that may pull it down.
Unless you or your partner have curly hair I think it's likely your child will loose the curls.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 12/08/2024 09:21

Toddler curls generally don't stay. That's half the reason they are so wonderfully adorable. The blonde will probably go and she will be a middle brown by school starting age. By as @WoopsLiza says in her lovely post, you will have so many other things to focus on.

My daughter was born with really dark straight hair, like a cute baby chimpanzee, then it went really blonde and curly by the time she was 2-3, in her early teens she was thick, quite light blonde, straight hair. Now she's mid-teens, it's a dark blonde and I swear there is a kink in it which she vehemently denies because I have curly hair which she really doesn't want! 😁

Durdledore · 12/08/2024 09:38

My eldest had poker straight shiny, glossy hair until puberty and then developed a mass of amazing curls.

Gymmum82 · 12/08/2024 09:38

My dd had gorgeous curls until she was about 3 or 4. I never cut her hair on purpose as I knew they would go. But they went anyway. Just dropped out as her hair grew. Now she’s 8 and it’s completely straight

ShowOfHands · 12/08/2024 09:41

DH had poker straight hair until puberty and then it turned into perfect ringlets.

There's just no telling.

Same for my DD.

I think if I used the curly girl method on her, I could probably bring the curls back though. (It is still very curly underneath when hair is wet.)

SnapdragonToadflax · 12/08/2024 10:17

My son had curls like that at that age and they didn't stay - his hair is very straight now. They were very cute and I do miss them, but it doesn't really matter. And I have cute curly-haired photos to look back on (while being very grateful I have a five year old rather than a 17 month old 😂).

My hair is straight, dad's is very curly, so who knows what he'll end up with. His dad's hair went more curly in his teens.

MrsFionaCharnimg · 12/08/2024 10:22

So many babies have blonde hair with a slight curl. It generally does not stay if you look around at primary aged dc.

The obvious answer to this is to look at your and your partner's hair. If neither of you have defined curls, it's unlikely that your dc will inherit. Not foolproof, of course.

Once the hair gets longer, it will also be weighed down and appear straighter

rickandmorts · 12/08/2024 10:24

My 21 month old also has curls at the back and I was wondering too! She's had a first haircut and they've remained too. They are so cute 🥰

Lemevoir · 12/08/2024 10:24

DD had ringlets as a toddler which disappeared with her first proper haircut and it was straight for several years (but I did wonder if there was a slight wave/curl trying to come through her very thick, all one length hair).

Puberty and having some gentle layers cut into her hair to take away some of the heaviness, now mean that the ringlet curls have come back.

WetBandits · 12/08/2024 10:25

I had curly blonde hair as a baby, which turned to frizzy, mousy hair by the time I was about 7!

DP also had curly blonde hair as a baby, which stayed throughout childhood and young adulthood (and he would probably still be blonde and curly if he wasn’t bald now!) Grin

Butwhybecause · 12/08/2024 10:28

If they stay she might grow to hate them like me as my hair is always unruly and takes a lot of taming.

Both DD had gentle baby curls, one now has gently wavy hair, the other absolutely straight hair. You just can't tell.

LoquaciousPineapple · 12/08/2024 12:27

Curls like that don't tend to stay, especially if you grow the hair longer so it's more weighted down. It's only really tight ringlet curls that tend to stick around in my experience, and even they get a lot looser as the hair grows.

I’ve had 3 curly kids - this is DD who is the least curly. She’s 2.5 and was v similar to your DD a year ago. So maybe this is a glimpse into the future for you. She has a double crown and the top half of her hair is pretty straight but the bottom half curls are starting to come in now.

Her brothers were FAR curlier and peaked around 3. I do think it’s easier to keep this kind of curl the less you cut it as the length/weight seems to give them more chance - they’re a pretty loose/big diameter curl so it makes sense that you need more length in order to make more curls.

My kids have my hair and we all got darker and straighter by age 5/6 ish. DS1 is 9 now and if he grows his hair his curls come back but he prefers short hair.
