Where would you live if you could choose anywhere?

So I have recently found Vancouver after visiting many places all over the world. Have loved other places ie Sydney,Venice,Rio etc but can honestly say ,I so wish I had found Vancouver 30 years ago ..beautiful city , friendly people, clean and scenic.
Expensive but no more so than London…anywhere else that people would move to in a heartbeat .

I lived in Charleston South Carolina and really loved it. Beaches, history, you can walk around but also has all the best bits of being America.

But I like West Sussex. Warm, soft chalk hills and money but not as ostentatious as nearby Surrey or Hampshire.
And the Isle of Wight although it's spoilt with too much housing and traffic now.
I need places with history.

Nourishinghandcream · 08/08/2024 22:16

Isle Of Purbeck - my happy place.🙂

You can keep all your foreign destinations, IOP does it for me.
When all the tourists have gone home there is nothing more relaxing than walking Ddogs along Ballard Down.
A beautiful walk with views of the IOW, Corfe Castle, Brownsea Island and the Agglestone rock.
Just heaven.🥰

That surprises me as we were disappointed and found it stuck of weed and was quite soulless. We love Canada and have family in Calgary so expected to fall for Vancouver. I’m glad we visited but wouldn’t want to live there. I loved Chicago but not sure about the winters.

Where were you staying and did you explore? We just found the vibe really relaxed and friendly.

Lots of exploring with dd age11 and dtds age 8. We didn’t hate it but certainly wouldn’t want to live there. We stayed centrally and walked miles, saw whales etc then drove through the Rockies. Now the towns outside Vancouver in the British Columbia side of the Rockies were beautiful. We didn’t find Vancouver vibe to be child friendly. Saw children at the park/pool to the north but only a couple in the city centre and restaurants didn’t have any children in them (along the sea front) it was quite peculiar. That was summer 2019.

Nannydoodles · 08/08/2024 22:48

I agree I wouldn’t want to live in Vancouver, we visited last year and although parts are lovely, especially around the harbour, it stunk of weed and felt unsafe in the city centre at night due to the amount of Fentanyl addicts, they have a very real problem there since hard drugs have been decriminalised.
Obviously i know the Uk has its problems but I still wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

I personally think it is a great place to have children…my son lives at Kitsilano and every evening families were at the beach chilling with their, picnics etc .
My OP was about but where other people would like to live,I personally loved Vancouver…where do you dream of living?

I love living in North Dorset (moved from Kent 20 years ago). So much choice of places to go - I can get to cities (Bath, Bristol, Exeter or London) as day trips, the Dorset coast for the sea and woods and fields to choose from.

Away from here, Nantucket appeals and on the other extreme, a villa in Greece over looking a cove. Where in Greece would need further research.

MissingMoominMamma · 08/08/2024 22:58

West Wales.

Mitsky · 08/08/2024 23:00

In the UK I’d live in the new forest.

otherwise it would be Copenhagen, Gothenburg or Stockholm

Great that you love the UK 😊I didn’t pick up on the weed smell and there was just one street that people avoided. Anyway I started this thread for a bit of light hearted relief from the rubbish news !

Bruges. Friendly, walkable, lovely buildings.

In the UK it would be west Wales or central London.

SilverliningHunter · 08/08/2024 23:07

London but as a rich person. With a windswept coastal Scottish bolthole to escape to.

NancyJoan · 08/08/2024 23:09

Central London. I dream of a mews house in Marylebone. Always have, always will.

HRTQueen · 08/08/2024 23:13

Notting Hill in one of the lovely regency houses off the main roads. Many are flats now but ideally I would like a house

Shropshire.
Lots of hills, beautiful scenery, villages, country pubs and not many people.
Fairly central so not remote and can get up to the Lakes or down to the South West for holidays.

I've got a static caravan just over the border into Wales which I'm currently in and love the relaxed pace of life here and the people.

I'll definitely retire over this way.

WomensRightsRenegade · 08/08/2024 23:37

Vancouver is a woke hellhole. And no that doesn’t mean everyone is kumbayah. It means authoritarian clampdowns on free speech and the mutilation and sterilisation of children.

BensonStabler · 08/08/2024 23:47

I would live in a parallel universe. On a peaceful world, free from war and suffering. One where my life and the happiness and most importantly, the health of my family and I were fantastic.

And where we wouldn’t age fast or too far, and we would live a long long time with our lovely pets that would never again die long before us! 😌

Jl2014 · 09/08/2024 06:07

OP, Vancouver is literally at the epicentre of a drugs and homelessness crisis. I can’t fathom how anyone who has visited Vancouver hasn’t noticed this!! It’s blocks and blocks from DTES, Gastown and so on. There is a tourist bubble in the west end/stanley park and Canada place where you just about escape it but downtown is literally like night of the living dead. I have never ever felt so unsafe in a city and have lived in plenty of big cities including London and New York. Vancouver has been the biggest disappointment holiday-wise ever and made me feel lucky to be in the UK.
