How long till antibiotics kick in?

Prescribed yesterday for hand and it's like this now.

I just sent GP a photo, I wasn't seen in person and it was not this bad with previous photo.

Do I just persevere with the antibiotics and cream?

It's so itchy, it's driving me mad.

And I don't even know what it is. I just got a txt to say antibiotics and creme at chemist.

I think if you've been taking them for 24 hours and it's got worse, I'd go back to gp

SweetBirdsong · 08/08/2024 19:18

Did they say what it is? Is it eczema? It looks a bit like psoriasis. Anti-B's should start to work within 24-36 hours.

No, he rang for 5 seconds, I couldn't answer fast enough then he just txt to say meds at chemist with no explanation.

I think I may have had a reaction to cleaning products as I sorted out my washing machine drawer the day it started and it was full of old fabric softener, then I used bleach.

I'm due my 6th pill in a few hours

Also I have no idea how to care for it.

Am I supposed to keep it in open air? Bandage it? It's embarrassing going out with it do I've had it dressed.

But it seems to get wet/sweaty

And the blisters keep popping

Could it be chemical burns from the bleach? I think if it doesn't look any better tomorrow, I'd go back to GP or a walk in centre if you have one.

Allnewtometoo · 08/08/2024 19:30

I agree if its not looking better after 8 doses, go back. Poor you!

Snacksgalore · 08/08/2024 19:33

Normally 48 hours.

A chemical burn wouldn’t need antibotics unless it also became infection. It looks really sore.

You need to see a nurse for advice on how to look after it.

Jeannie88 · 08/08/2024 19:38

I've found antibiotics work pretty quickly. I have a condition called granuloma annulare which looks very much like this and flares up when using certain chemicals. Steroid cream gets rid of it, not antibiotics. Xx

Tillygan60 · 08/08/2024 19:39

Ask local pharmacist for advice as soon as they open tomorrow. They are a useful resource and should able to answer your questions. If not they should be able to tell you whether or not you need GP or walk in service.

Keep clean, open to air, and you should be prescribed some cream to apply? X

LuckysDadsHat · 08/08/2024 19:41

It looks a bit shingles like to me. I would get a second opinion.

Sparrowball · 08/08/2024 19:53

Is there any pus? It does look more like a viral infection and @LuckysDadsHat could be right with shingles.

Could you even show it to a pharmacist if you can't see your GP? There's no point taking antibiotics of it's a viral infection.

Tabbiesta · 08/08/2024 19:56

Yes there was yellow pus, I'll find a photo. This was about 5 days ago

Now it's just got clear fluid inside.

The GP is a specialist in skin conditions.

I'd give it until tomorrow then if it's not improving go to minor injuries/urgent care if it's not improving. I'd put a light dressing on it just so it's not bashing on anything and getting more sore.

Theunamedcat · 08/08/2024 19:59

If it's itchy are you taking antihistamines

Could it be impetigo? The blisters burst and yellow-orange scabs appear.

Tabbiesta · 11/08/2024 11:55

Finished half the antibiotics and it looks like this.

It's still forming new blisters with pus in it.

It's extremely sore :(

I think I'll have to ring doctors again tomorrow??

Op do you have a walk in at all? Can you ring your GP and see if there's any advice on how to see a doctor out of hours? Mine has a recorded message when you call.

That looks horrendous. I'd be worried about a very serious infection.

Edited

Maybe but I don't fancy going there TBH.

I don't feel unwell at all, I feel absolutely fine so think I would rather just see GP tomorrow.

It's very sore though and I'm very fed up.

It's hot to the touch still and leaking.

Why aren't the antibiotics working?? :(
