Astronauts stuck in space, terrifying!

I realise this happened a couple of months ago but I've only come across it today, and they're still there.

They went for 8 days, and likely to be there for 8 months.

I would imagine they go knowing the risk this may happen. Astronauts are not average people anyway. The physical and mental tests they go through to ensure they are able to deal with these sorts of things makes them a rare breed. While I would be sobbing into my freeze-dried ice cream, they are probably all keeping busy with astronaut chores.

@Allnewtometoo Don’t get me wrong, it’s my idea of a nightmare, but the average stay on the ISS is about 6 months and they have both been before. Sunita stayed for 4 months before. Extra supplies are taken in from computer controlled aircraft. They will be fine!

For those curious as to what living on the ISS is like, Sunita Williams did a tour on one of her previous trips:

amazing watch thank you

That video is amazing. Although it made me very claustrophobic and the WIRES everywhere tell me that a career in space is not for me 😆🤣

Tiswa · 10/08/2024 12:32

I have had a panic attack on the mission space ride in Epcot (the green baby version as well) with claustrophobia and just thinking about it makes me slightly panicked so I would not get in the spacecraft

but yes I think it will have a physical and mental affect on them but given it was a test run they must have known there was a chance for this

I honestly cannot understand why anybody would want to go into space. The thought of it terrifies me.

Wait till you find out you’re already floating around in space 😜

Willmafrockfit · 10/08/2024 13:28

although the lack of sunlight would be a thing

😂😂 I bet you’d complain if your salad was cold at the restaurant, but when astronauts are stuck in space for potentially 8 months instead of the planned 8 days you “dont see the problem”

Astronauts are incredibly tough. The training they go through is mind-blowing. They really are exceptional people. They'll have been trained on all possible emergency scenarios and well aware of the possibility of this happening.
It does mess up their schedules but they'll be getting on with life aboard the ISS.

WTAFisthisnonsense · 10/08/2024 14:10

They will have been prepared for this before they went to the ISS.

All predictable eventualities (and this is one that is easy to predict) will have been discussed and planned for with the astronauts - their psychological evaluations will have explored their ability to deal with this - if they couldn't have coped, they would have been stood down from the crew.

Of course it isn't ideal, but they will be ok. They will be video calling family and friends very often and psychologists will be on hand to help, if necessary.

The news are now reporting that the astronauts don't have the correct space suits to come home, seems they have to send more out to them?! A flight is perhaps possible in the autumn or more likely early next year, with no decision having been made.

Starliner: Nasa delays return of astronauts stuck in space again

Nasa avoided questions about safety but said the astronauts were "doing great".

This doesn't seem like news to me. It seems like there was a press conference, NASA didn't want to/cannot legally give out what is likely confidential and sensitive information, and the news are sensationalising this as though NASA are delaying the decision, or concerned about safety, when chances are they're just dealing with it internally. Non-event, IMO.
