Astronauts stuck in space, terrifying!

I realise this happened a couple of months ago but I've only come across it today, and they're still there.

They went for 8 days, and likely to be there for 8 months.

I can't help but think that if humans choose to do things like go into space, they are accepting the risk that things might not go to plan.
Most things we do carry an element of risk. We mitigate it as far as possible and according to our own comfort levels but life itself is inherently risky.

I hope they've asked someone to feed the cat 😧

how do you mean?

Just a thought...

How do you get a hair trim in the ISS? You wouldn't want bits of hair floating all over the place. I'd look like a yeti after 8 months.

This is the sort of post I love. Would never occur to me but a really interesting question!

For what it's worth, I find it terrifying as well OP despite others disagreeing. It's why I am not an astronaut. Well that and my complete lack of knowledge and skills.

They use vacuums, there’s videos of hair cutting and nail trimming, where they cut the nails close to the vents to stop them just floating away and then they grab and dispose of them

I read that their parking spaces are full. So I don't get how they're ever going to get home. I mean, I'm sure they will, but are the Americans going to have to ask the Russians if they can park in one of their spots (interestingly, they have 3 to americas 2).

They have different docking systems so not compatible. If they can't sort out the problems with the Starliner they will presumably undock it to free up the docking port.

LaeralSilverhand · 08/08/2024 13:28

8 months is way off the record stay on the ISS by the way, which is 371 days. I'm sure the resident crew will keep them busy.

I don't think so. Having to change some plans and being a bit bored are rarely fatal.

Yes yes see my post above. The BBC article didnt give a great deal of information, and in my ignorance, I had no idea how the ISS was set up with people there all the time 😳

Less terrifying than I thought. Massively inconvenient maybe....

I read the article earlier today and it gave all the information that is there now including the fact they are in the ISS have been sent extra clothes and a delivery of food and supplies. It also says what the plan is to get them back.
There are people on the ISS all the time for lengthy stays.

coxesorangepippin · 08/08/2024 12:46

How awful

They don't mention food in the link? Do astronauts not need food?!

It clearly states that they have had a delivery of food, supplies and clothes.

SweetAmber · 08/08/2024 13:35

I bet they are missing earth family and friends. It must be a creepy feeling tbh

In what way? Nobody is missing or has died, they're absolutely fine.

It is about as far from that situation as it possible could be.

Tiswa · 08/08/2024 13:41

I would find the idea absolutely awful as v claustrophobic but I suspect astronauts who have already spent over a year (Sunita Williams) and 8 months (Barry Wilford) already in space plus the former has spent loads of spacewalk hours they are just fine!

Oh, I don't know - this sounds like the scary part of a sci-fi movie...

Mr Wilmore, 61, and Ms Williams, 58, flew a Boeing Starliner spacecraft to the station. It was the first flight of its kind with people on board and was a test designed to see how the new spacecraft performs before it is used more regularly. Problems, however, emerged as it made its approach. These included leaks in its propulsion system and some of its thrusters shutting down.

Yikes!

BunnyLake · 08/08/2024 13:44

That would be one of my biggest fears about being in space, not that I would ever want to go (no money in the world would get me up there).

It may be the safest place to be. I'm tempted to join.

No way would I go up there, zero gravity is extremely bad for your health!

It's like another Titan Sub situation

In what way is implosion of a submersible diving to the Titanic basically for rich tourists comparable to a fault with a spacecraft manned by highly trained and skilled astronauts..?

People are so dramatic. These astronauts have trained for years, they're ex-military, they're used to uncomfortable and unexpected situations.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 08/08/2024 13:49

Given that the craft that got them there was literally being tested by them, in an environment diametrically opposed to human survival I imagine they're rather grateful to only be stuck on ISS for 8 months rather than the alternative.

They are experienced, trained and well supplied.

That being said, having see first hand the environment they'll be living in (the space centre at Leicester is incredible) this would be absolute torture for me...but fortunately I'm not on anyone's radar as a possible astronaut!

😂😂 I bet you’d complain if your salad was cold at the restaurant, but when astronauts are stuck in space for potentially 8 months instead of the planned 8 days you “dont see the problem”
