School polo tops which don't shrink

peebles32 · 07/08/2024 18:55

I normally just buy cheap ones from Asda or Tescoes but they shrink. I am trying to buy better quality as I am trying to be more sustainable and don't want to keep replacing them.
Can anyone recommend where to buy polo tops which stay white and don't shrink on a 60 wash?

I always got ds from next. Lasted well and washed well. I also got new ones in Easter hols so they were at their best at the time of year he didnt wear a jumper!

Well I don't wash on 60 for starters, that'll shrink many fabrics, 40 works fine, clothes don't need sanitising. And we use M&S polos, never noticed them shrink, they last all year.

mrsed1987 · 07/08/2024 21:15

I use asda, wash at 30, they lasted all year and kept their colour better then the m and s ones did. Why are you washing them at 60?

Just buy a size bigger to allow for shrinkage...

But also, washing at 30° or 40° with bio powder and possibly some laundry bleach should get them clean.

ItsAlrightDarling · 07/08/2024 21:26

I buy Next polo shirts which don’t shrink, but I was at 40 so that may be why.

Cobblersorchard · 07/08/2024 21:28

They will all shrink at 60, wash at 30.

The branded ones at our school don’t shrink unless tumbled a lot. We wash at 30 and mostly line dry.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/08/2024 21:31

I found the M&S ones best, but they stopped making the right colour. Next are just ok, no better than ASDA really.

gertrudeorberyl · 07/08/2024 21:32

I buy Asda as they seem to keep the blue colour, shape and size best. I wash them at 30 though.

Quornflakegirl · 07/08/2024 21:32

M&S were the only ones that didn’t shrink for us.

TiredArse · 07/08/2024 21:33

I found they all shrink, especially if tumble dried.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/08/2024 21:33

Oh and I just buy them a size too large, because I am going to hot wash them and tumble them dry too (which is what really shrinks them). They shrink once but they don't keep on shrinking.

BakewellGin1 · 07/08/2024 21:36

I buy both white and purple polo's from Asda - 6 purple and 6 white
No shrinkage and iron well
I wash on 30 or 40, with laundry liquid, usually throw in a scoop of stain remover with the whites, I never tumble them. Either line dry or on clothes horse in winter.
Edited to add they kept colours fine too

peebles32 · 08/08/2024 08:54

I always do my whites on 60. How can I get to 50 years old and not know that they will shrink?? 👀

Try 40 and just chuck something like vanish stay bright type powder (forgotten what it's called) in with it if you're worried.

Dreamerinme · 08/08/2024 09:00

We buy Sainsbury’s and they’ve never shrunk. Washed on 40 and never tumble dried.

Bingbangboo · 08/08/2024 09:04

I always buy asda ones and they've never shrunk. Wash at 40 and sometimes tumble dried. Why are you washing at 60?

I always thought whites should go on a hot wash! I have had it wrong for 30 years!

They'll be fine on 40, even 30 if not particularly dirty. Any stains and I would put some Vanish in and line dry in the sunshine if possible (hasn't happened much this year!).

Cobblersorchard · 08/08/2024 22:03

@peebles32 people boiled whites in the “old days” before modern machines and detergents. Some habits stuck and were passed down the generations but you honestly don’t need to these days. I assume you aren’t using soap and a mangle 😉

LightFull · 08/08/2024 22:12

Don't wash on a 60 wash

The enzymes in washing gel / powder denature so they won't get clean over 40 for a start

Plus of course on 60 they'll shrink

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 08/08/2024 22:15

are you sure your kids not just growing? Grin

I've been known to wash the ones from Tesco at 90 and I don't recall them shrinking. That was every few washes so may have saved them.

TheHennaHairedHarridan · 08/08/2024 22:19

Mine never shrink but I don't wash them at 60, luckily our school allows coloured ones instead of white. If school insisted on white I think I'd just make my peace with them being slightly stained...

morebubbles32 · 08/08/2024 22:30

They all shrink if put in a hot wash or tumble dried. Just buy cheap ones two sizes too big and replace them every year.

Ilovewillow · 09/08/2024 06:51

M&S, again washed on a lower temperature and use laundry bleach.

😂😂😂

I think clothes do shrink more easily nowadays - I blame the cheaper fibres!!!
