If you could live anywhere outside the UK where would you go?

I have lived abroad before but have been in the UK so I know there is good and bad in lots of places. DH has often said he would like to move to the forest to a cabin in Finland and have lots of dogs. I always thought it was a barmy idea.
He has a good job and technically we could live anywhere.
Where would you go if you could?

I am thinking Costa Rica.

A cabin in the forest in Finland with dogs would be sheer torture to me!

I'd live in an apartment in Paris, in the 6th arrondissement, with wonderful cafes & restaurants nearby, world class museums and galleries a stone's throw away, and fab shops and markets nearby.

I'd stroll in the Luxembourg Gardens on sunny afternoons, and pop into Les Deux Magots for an apero. 🥂 🍾

Or my second choice would be an apartment not too far from the main square in Sienna.

We’d move to Greece! We love the slower pace of life, the food and lack of being bombarded by visual information all the time! No road signs every 10 yards, not that they take any notice of them anyway - and where we go, you can park practically anywhere!

Where in Greece? I can never decide as there’s too much choice. Also, the language is tricky. I could be convinced though. Otherwise, Italy would be my other choice… possibly France.

I already moved to Vietnam, but I want to leave next year and haven't found a new job yet so this is a non-hypothetical question for me!

I really, really, really want to move to Moscow, buuuuuut this is maybe not the best time to do it (understatement). So I'm currently hoping to go to Almaty in Kazakhstan. Compared with where I am now it has great public transport, walkable streets, stunning scenery, options for hiking, 'better' weather (in the sense that you can spend time outside without immediately sweating to death), it's cleaner, I would actually be able to talk to people, and you can buy bread and potatoes easily Grin Vietnam is great in many ways and there are lots of things I'll miss here, but it would never be a long term home for me I don't think.

I also frequently fantasise about moving to a cabin in the woods somewhere, but in reality I know I'd last about three days without access to a big supermarket and overpriced coffee shops Grin

CrushingOnRubies · 08/08/2024 06:15

Don't know but somewhere warm in summer so you can almost guarantee it will be nice weather and not have to have a back up plan for a wash out bbq or whatever

Maybe Southern California

LaPalmaLlama · 08/08/2024 06:29

Boulder Colorado- never been there so definitely an “instinct pick”

More sensibly, Hong Kong. Lived there a long time and miss it. It’s probably the world’s most liveable major city. It’s not really a long term option though as you wouldn’t want to live there in retirement unless you owned your house as rents are so high and there’s no state pension.

A cosy apartment in Amsterdam In the Leidseplein area. Museums, restaurants, Vondelpark, squares for sitting with a glass of wine and people watching, happy Dutch people.

Oh I think about this all the time when I can’t get to sleep at night. I would have to move somewhere imaginary to meet all my requirements. I want somewhere warm but not too warm.
I would have a gorgeous little house and garden near the beach and countryside. The house would be filled with books, tasteful art and lots of plants and has a covered in porch to sit out on.The nearest place I can think of is a sort of Martha’s Vineyard type vibe. Not that I have ever been there😂.
I cycle along a quiet wild flower lined lane or promenade to a lovely cafe every morning. I have my little dog in the basket on the front of my bike. I have coffee and a pastry. Then some shopping at a delightful deli and bric a brac shops. I cycle home and tend to the garden, read, paint, swim, walk on the beach or just chill. I never cook and just live on deli bits, fresh fruit and salads, glasses of wine and my cafe visits. I dress in a slightly Diane Keaton incredibly stylish way.
Occasionally I visit art galleries or museums or go for a delicious evening meal to a restaurant. I also find a fantastic cleaning lady who also becomes a great friend. I can speak the local language fluently in my imaginary country and make some select good friends and a handsome occasional lover. I have two cats one ginger and one tortoiseshell. I usually fall asleep by this point!

I imagine a similar "perfect life" except without the cats!

NomenNudum · 08/08/2024 08:10

Switzerland. Mountains, lakes, hiking, chocolate, fondue, clean, excellent transport, cities with a decent international vibe.

Costacoffeeplease · 08/08/2024 08:43

We made the move 20 years ago to Portugal. It’s in no way perfect and there have been times I’ve been ready to move on but we’re still here.

DancingLions · 08/08/2024 08:49

Tokyo. It's my favourite city in the world and Japan has so many beautiful places to visit if I wanted a break from the city.
If I won the Euromillions, my first stop would be to the Japanese Embassy to say "right, I'm a multi millionaire, how can I buy my way in to live there" 😂I feel there must be some way if I was rich enough!

ColourByNumbers88 · 08/08/2024 08:56

@CombatLingerie oh yes please, I'm going to use this technique instead of podcasts to get to sleep...

Canada, Scandinavia or New Zealand.

Omg WHY WHY WHY would you want to move to the shithole that is Moscow? I'm from Moscow and it's the last place I would want to live. At least pick St Petersburg if you want to live in that madhouse. At least St Petersburg is truly beautiful. Although the weather is horrible.

As for Kazakhstan, Astana is a much nicer place to live than Almaty.

pinkhousesarebest · 08/08/2024 10:56

I live in southern France. It’s getting way toohot in the summer now and I dream of a little cottage on the west coast of Ireland - south Donegal or Westport. At four in the morning, I am designing the hand hewn kitchen units.😂

XelaM · 08/08/2024 10:57

I'm planning a move to Dubai in the near future (work-dependent).

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 08/08/2024 11:05

I moved to Western Australia, its pretty awesome. I'm five minutes from a glorious beach and also have a pool so I do a lot of swimming as its hot enough for at least six months a year in my unheated pool. We are putting in a pool heater to get another few months out of pool season, but ideally i would spend Oz winter/ European summer in either Greece or Italy, can't decide which.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 08/08/2024 11:07

I've lived in ireland too, West Cork is heaven in the sun, one of the most beautiful places on earth in the sunshine, but I couldn't handle the rain in the end.

MorvernBlack · 08/08/2024 11:08

I just want to be warm, we've had a shocking summer where we live. Would be quite happy to live somewhere without winter weather, but not scorching.
I love San Diego for the climate and lifestyle - It's so much easier to stay fit, be outdoorsy and eat healthily when there is decent weather most days. But it is too expensive, healthcare is an issue and obviously the politics.
I do like The Netherlands and Scandinavia, but a close friend really struggled to fit in in Sweden, which has really put me off as she's the type that settles anywhere.

alrightluv · 08/08/2024 11:14

Greece for me too. Kassiopi. Although I'd probably have a yacht to travel away when it's too hot.

Alonglongway · 08/08/2024 11:15

Yeah West Cork for me. Maybe out on the islands.

Me too.
Or British Columbia with magnificent views of the mountains and the ocean.

Crunchymum · 08/08/2024 11:38

Kefalonia for me.

Not too fussy where as everywhere I've been on the island, I've absolutely adored.

Pedallleur · 08/08/2024 12:12

Somewhere warm either with a nice coastline or lakes/mountains.

secondspring · 08/08/2024 17:40
