How much tip would you have given for this meal?

Pre booked party of 12 (ages 16 - 80). Wet Monday night in busy tourist destination in school hols. "Beach shack" style but still pricy (£22 min mains). Restaurant no more than half full.

  • shown to table, not enough seats for everyone, staff ignored us as we looted chairs from different parts of restaurant so we could all sit.

  • pretty prompt in taking order but slow in delivering it. Some sides missing.

  • left waiting for ages with food in front of us but no cutlery. Asked 3-4 times. Eventually someone got up and found it themselves.

  • food slopped over us when brought to the table.

  • one-way service - i.e. staff would bring things to the table but never take anything (empty dishes, glasses etc.) away. We cleared our own dirty dishes away onto an adjacent empty table after waiting a looong time.

  • one gluten intolerant person served a meal with gluten. Was suspicious after one bite (burger bun tasted too good), sent it back and was told yes, sorry, wrong bun. Waited 20 minutes for a replacement by which time we had all finished.

  • staff basically hiding from customers around the corner so us and other customers frequently had to get up and find them to order more drinks etc.

There's more but that was the worst of it. They did deduct the cost of the incorrect meal from the bill. How much tip do you think we should have left?

PoopedAndScooped · 06/08/2024 19:06

£0

DontKeepScratchingIt · 06/08/2024 19:07

Nothing.

Sidebeforeself · 06/08/2024 19:08

Nothing and i would have politely explained why

neilyoungismyhero · 06/08/2024 19:09

Look both ways before you cross the road...my top tip

NoNameisGoodEnough · 06/08/2024 19:09

Nothing. The tip reflects the service and you didn't really get any!

ZenNudist · 06/08/2024 19:09

Nothing. I always tip except when service is shocking. It would have to be as bad as you describe for me to not tip.

SauviGone · 06/08/2024 19:10

Nothing.

Whiskeyandkittens · 06/08/2024 19:12

Nothing - plus a truthful TripAdvisor review.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 06/08/2024 19:13

Zero.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 06/08/2024 19:13

I’m a generous tipper and I wouldn’t have left anything.

Service has become really poor in recent years.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 06/08/2024 19:15

Tip? What for?

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 06/08/2024 19:16

Nothing. It sounds dreadful. I don't know why anyone would tip in a situation like that, particularly with the gluten issue.

cariadlet · 06/08/2024 19:17

A tip is a thank you for good service so nothing.

Big fat zero

if they asked why I wouldn’t be shy in telling them either

ChickenDeChick · 06/08/2024 19:23

Zero, wouldn't even entertain the thought of tipping!

Sinderalla · 06/08/2024 19:24

The tip I would give is..
Retrain your staff in hospitality

JC03745 · 06/08/2024 19:25

Nothing. I would have mentioned the sloppiness to a manager at the time- to give them an opportunity to improve/reply/explain etc. I'd then write a factual review on tripadvisor.

BCBird · 06/08/2024 19:27

Zilch

yeesh · 06/08/2024 19:33

Zero and I would have got money off the bill. Sounds totally crap

GinForBreakfast · 06/08/2024 19:35

Thank you MN. We did indeed leave nothing. But a friend was scandalised today when I told her so I doubted myself.

There was no manager in sight so I emailed the restaurant general email address today with hopefully helpful service tips for the future. No online review, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they were just having an off day!

Why are you asking, the answer is obviously nothing

PJ04JCW · 06/08/2024 19:36

I'd report under Natasha's law for the gluten error, never mind leaving a tip. What if it had been a peanut allergy?

fortheveryfirsttime · 06/08/2024 19:38

For service that poor I would have expected more reduction off my bill. Definitely no tip.
