How much tip would you have given for this meal?

Pre booked party of 12 (ages 16 - 80). Wet Monday night in busy tourist destination in school hols. "Beach shack" style but still pricy (£22 min mains). Restaurant no more than half full.

  • shown to table, not enough seats for everyone, staff ignored us as we looted chairs from different parts of restaurant so we could all sit.

  • pretty prompt in taking order but slow in delivering it. Some sides missing.

  • left waiting for ages with food in front of us but no cutlery. Asked 3-4 times. Eventually someone got up and found it themselves.

  • food slopped over us when brought to the table.

  • one-way service - i.e. staff would bring things to the table but never take anything (empty dishes, glasses etc.) away. We cleared our own dirty dishes away onto an adjacent empty table after waiting a looong time.

  • one gluten intolerant person served a meal with gluten. Was suspicious after one bite (burger bun tasted too good), sent it back and was told yes, sorry, wrong bun. Waited 20 minutes for a replacement by which time we had all finished.

  • staff basically hiding from customers around the corner so us and other customers frequently had to get up and find them to order more drinks etc.

There's more but that was the worst of it. They did deduct the cost of the incorrect meal from the bill. How much tip do you think we should have left?

I'd report under Natasha's law for the gluten error, never mind leaving a tip. What if it had been a peanut allergy?

Absolutely, that's not just shitty service

I would usually tip 10% for any meal, but given the service you experienced, I wouldn't have left anything, and I would also leave a frank review on Trip Adviser.

Why does your friend think you should have left a tip when they failed so badly at even a basic level of service and restaurant staff are paid at least NMW which is as much as many other workers who never receive a penny in tips?

Giving them constructive feedback by email was the best response from you. If they've any pride in themselves they'd be mortified about how poor your experience was. Was this a chain or an independent?

Zilch

especially with the food mix up with gluten food. I'd be inclined to contact environmental health... if they can mix that up what are there other food practices like?

It's an independent. Friend felt giving 10% was minimum expectation but we were unanimous that we couldn't justify a tip on this occasion.

None. And I always (or almost always) tip.
