If you don't let your kid eat blackberries...

Before they have been washed what do you think will happen? Or what has happened?

Just curious as I've always let my kids eat them as soon as they've picked them and I'm not sure what harm would come to them.

We pick them but soak them in lemon water … it forces the larvae out. And there’s a lot buried inside them … 🤮

We also use that or apple cider vinegar.

My children did eat a blackberry or two, while picking, but they eventually stopped that after seeing what came out of them after a soaking in a bowl of water. There's usually grubs and that sort of thing.

I’m a bit confused, why would this be any different from what comes out of blackberries from the supermarket? I don’t let my kids eat them because I get freaked out that they might pick a poisonous berry - like it might not actually beee a blackberry. It might look like one. I have issues though.

But can’t see why the bugs would be any different from blackberry farmer’s (?) fields?

I think the ones from the farmer's field have probably been sprayed with pesticide, it's a toss up between bug removel and pesticide!
I buy blackberries from the supermarket, and have never seen a bug.
I wash all fruit and veg, though regardless of origin.

Like gardenmusic I've never seen any on the very rare occasion I've bought pre packed blackberries from the supermarket and I just wash those rather than soak.

I don’t know much about commercial blackberry production, @Devonshiregal but I would guess pesticides, insect and bird netting or poly tunnels. I do know about pathogens though 😂 I think the risk of contamination with human parasites and bacteria and toxins of commercial blackberries is probably slightly higher than wild blackberries -no dog pee 😂 but they could carry bacteria from organic fertiliser 💩, water, chemicals (eg pesticides, weed killer) and contamination from pickers and packers hands.

The shitload of pesticide used. You can have pesticide and no bugs or no pesticide and bugs basically. No idea why it’s a big deal. People have been eating blackberries with lava in them for thousands of years with zero ill effect. People have been eating blackberries cultivated with pesticides for a comparatively short period of time and we don’t truly know the effects.

Dogs may have weed on the lower blackberries, but birds may have weed or pooped on the higher ones. Whatever, my grandchildren and I picked loads last week, the kids ate loads of them and they're fine.
