If you don't let your kid eat blackberries...

Before they have been washed what do you think will happen? Or what has happened?

Just curious as I've always let my kids eat them as soon as they've picked them and I'm not sure what harm would come to them.

They contain little blackberry bugs but they won't cause any problems unless you're vegetarian 😅

I wonder how much fruit is out of bounds for vegans/vegetarians. Either you're eating the worms and killing them or your rinsing/soaking and killing the worms that way.

NewlifeTry · 06/08/2024 17:17

Yep to kids freely picking and eating blackberries from waist height off the main roads, kids have done this for decades.

I literally only mentioned what I made with the fruit and that my freezer was full. absolutely nothing sinister at all

What on earth did you make?

My gran and mother always soaked blackberries before using them. I agree with a PP that once you see all the larvae floating on top of the water it's really difficult to just pop a blackberry straight from the bush into your mouth.

I guess if you're not squeamish about eating bugs then just crack on with the higher up fruit, but as someone who barely eats meat I'm definitely in the 'no bug eating' camp of fruit consumption.

reesewithoutaspoon · 06/08/2024 17:27

Omg who knew blackberries were so subversive

Oooh you’re right@reesewithoutaspoon ! I just posted that I’d googled That Word to see what was wrong with it and my post is hidden too.

It just returns results on sweets

Maybe MN get lots of spam “health” advertising

I picked some wild blackberries and washed them at the weekend and nothing came out of them, they were obviously defective.

reesewithoutaspoon · 06/08/2024 17:31

You have to soak them a rinse, won't work. When you soak it forces the worms out of the berries because they are drowning. I m not getting many at the moment as the ones near me have only just come ripe, so the flies haven't had much of a chance to lay, but as the season goes along it increases

gardenmusic · 06/08/2024 17:36

Is it me, or are they early this year?

Thing is, it's not contamination! It's an entirely harmless substance in such a small quantity. Our stomachs literally neutralize it.

So it's 100 percent consequence free.

Contamination means when something is actually harmful.

Logic sets us freeeeeeeeee

Well, perhaps we can agree that all the low hanging brambles should be reserved for those who agree that dog pee is not a contaminant, while the rest of us pick from the higher fruits.

There, sorted.

Except, see other posts, dogs don't actually pee on spiky blackberry bushes.

See my posts - they do.

DD 12 and her friend came in with stained mouths yesterday after eating a mass of blackberries. They always look fine inside?

Do you have to wash supermarket ones too? Raspberries? Do I want to or is ignorance bliss?

I once used half a pack of dehydrated mushrooms for a meal. When I soaked the other half, and diced them they were full of rehydrated maggots!

Are you living in an Enid Blyton book?!

mitogoshi · 06/08/2024 17:53

Goodness knows what my youngest ate as she was berry mad and ate them from our garden where the (male) dog roamed and foxes, badgers etc frequented. She's a healthy adult now so didn't harm her.

I eat them straight from the bush too

They were probably brambles if they picked them outside, so maybe let ignorance be bliss!

You are unlikely to have brambles from a supermarket - they are more likely to be commercially grown blackberries, which you can wash or not - they won't need soaking ditto raspberries.

pinacollateral · 06/08/2024 17:56

what would happen if your kid ate a blackberry that had been weed on by a dog?

If you eat something covered in dog piss then obviously, the risk is that you could become unwell. You might not, but why risk it?

mitogoshi · 06/08/2024 17:56

@SlashBeef

At least I'm not alone, ditto salad Blush

I seem to avoid sickness bugs when others get them too. The proof will be in a few months when I'm visiting India - apparently everyone gets a dodgy belly, we'll see !

From the garden, no worries, from the road side, nah, quick wash first as you should see the colour of the water when rinsed off....it's quite a cool experiment, water is pretty clear from the garden, not clear from the road!

I was always taught you shouldn’t eat those from the roadside even washed because they’ve been exposed to the pollutants while growing

OuchIsLife · 06/08/2024 14:17

Please don't flame me these are genuine questions...
what would happen if your kid ate a blackberry that had been weed on by a dog?

Have you ever seen a dog wernin a blackberry bush?

What would happen if you are a small spider?

You don't know anything about the dog or fox that's weed on it, and they could be ill, on top of all the other rubbish that's in urine, as it is a waste product.

I've seen my own dog pee on lower down parts of blackberry bushes so yes, I'd imagine others do.

I don't imagine eating a small spider would harm anyone, but do you want to?

BoobyDazzler · 06/08/2024 18:11

A couple of years ago I was picking black berries from a hedge on my way back from a dog walk and putting them in a clean poo bag 😂 a group of young teenagers rode up on their bikes and asked me what I was doing and were absolutely aghast when I told them I was going to make a crumble and offered them to try one, they refused, even though I was happily eating them myself. I suggested they take some home to their mum and offered a bag and they said their mum wouldn’t like it.

The whole exchange made me a bit sad.
