Do dehumidifiers work well to dry clothes?

Recently moved house and delighted to now have a utility room with a pulley (as well as outdoor drying space).

However, our glorious west of Scotland climate means that clothes take aaaages to dry when the weather isn't perfect (rare) or the heating isn't on (also rare, because parsimonious).

Please don't suggest tumble dryers, I don't like them and don't want one (don't have the room for one anyway).

Have been looking at dehumidifiers, specifically those with laundry modes: do they make a significant difference?

Yes I have one and its great - cost about £80 from Argos about six years ago and its still going strong. I put the laundry rack up in the smallest room of our house which is the spare room / office, dehumidifier on and shut the door and if I hang them up in the morning they are dry in the evening. They are great. No "wet dog" smell.

Same here they are amazing for drying clothes. Like PP clothes that would usually take 24 hours to fry on the clothes horse, dry within a few hours with the dehumidifier. Just make sure all doors and windows are closed.

Finally bought a dehumidifier last winter and one of my best purchases ever. Works brilliantly for laundry. Mine's a Meaco and bought it after reading many online reviews. Lots of recommendations on mumsnet too

Dehumidifiers make a massive difference. I've never understood why more people don't use them to combat issues with damp.

Buy the best one you can afford, it's well worth it. Do some research.

I use mine with a heated airer. Works really well and I’m in an old period property that’s cold.

ConfessionsOfAMumDramaQueen · 05/08/2024 15:47

Yes, get a meaco one! Also highly recommend their air conditioning units for when it's hot.

Porridgeislife · 05/08/2024 15:47

Yes they’re amazing. Our Meaco one is about 8 years old and still going very strong. If you dry your washing in a smallish room you can get two full loads bone dry overnight.

Seriously79 · 05/08/2024 15:51

Yes! Absolute game changer.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 05/08/2024 15:53

Yep, love ours. And the heating being on isn’t necessary!

FictionalCharacter · 05/08/2024 15:55

You'll love it! I have a Meaco too. Just remember to use the smallest possible room and keep the door and windows closed.

Joddlebod · 05/08/2024 15:56

Yes love our meaco one use it for drying clothes when I can’t put it out.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 05/08/2024 15:56

Highly recommend. I use it in the winter and it works a treat.

I put it in the smallest room in the house, close the door and let it run for a couple of hours. Makes a huge difference to drying time

Bellringers4 · 05/08/2024 15:58

Yes, they are brilliant and even better in combination with a heated airer!

AffIt · 05/08/2024 15:59

Have bought a Meaco one!

Have bought a Meaco one!

Excellent! Report back after you've had a chance to use it.

Tadpole10 · 05/08/2024 16:01

I love our Meaco one! Same as all the PPs.

blackcatsarethebestcats · 05/08/2024 16:02

Was underwhelmed with dehumidifier when we tried one. We have a heated dryer (the Lakeland Dry:soon one) which is brilliant and would recommend.

Have bought a Meaco one!

Great, we use ours all the time for stuff we can't put in the tumble dryer.

We also discovered this year that it's great to get the house less stuffy on wet summer days.

TheSecretIsland · 05/08/2024 16:13

Agree with above.

I had one that didn't work, it was faulty and Meaco swapped quickly.

It also warms the room up by taking the damp out of the air.

Honestly one of the best things I've ever bought

hattie43 · 05/08/2024 16:14

Yes I have a Meaco one , it was about £160 but it's a godsend in winter

AffIt · 05/08/2024 16:16

Bloody thrilled to read all these replies and now incredibly excited about my new purchase... 😄

Yes also west of Scotland and use ours in a large airing cupboard beside the boiler. Works brilliantly. Needs to be in a closed cupboard or v small room with door and windows closed otherwise you are trying to dehumidify the world.
