Bigly Thanks to BruceAndNosh for the thread title.

Hopefully people can open this link OK.

I've given up because
A) it's Trump
B) you can't hear the questions and he doesn't give any clue what the question was.
C) it's Trump

Likewise.
At first I thought it was my feed that I couldn't hear the press questions. But I had sort of already tuned out at the bigly, bigger than MLK "I have a dream" crowd crap. He was talking BS as is the norm, all be it slightly more coherently than usual.

The sad truth is that all we can realistically hope for is that the Undecided/Independents in the swing states have enough intelligence to fact check Shock. Trump did nothing but ramble with lie after lie. Angry

His MAGA Cult followers are a lost cause so they'll believe his ranting. Confused

I believe that CNN will be doing a Fact Check. I hope that sensible Americans check it out.

Echobelly · 08/08/2024 20:44

It doesn't feel like he has a good 'hook' this time around. No 'Build the Wall' no 'Crooked Hillary' - I mean, they were both awful, but they worked for some reason.

halava · 08/08/2024 20:45

Now I have to go and try and figure out this Electoral College thing AGAIN. I have to look it up every four years and still baffled to get the hang of it. I hope it doesn't overturn the popular vote (if that's what it's called) if that turns out to be majority Dem.

It seems to be a complicated system to me, but I think it's historic due to the Civil War or something.

Time to look it up again. And yes I am a four yearly fair weather observer of US politics. Sorry about that.

prettybird · 08/08/2024 20:55

@halava - the electoral college system means that it is very possible to win the presidency without winning the popular vote. Confused

Clinton won the popular vote in 2016 but lost the electoral college (as I understand it, because she took the Rust Belt states for granted and didn't win lost them).

Biden won both the popular vote and the electoral college in 2020.

That's why the mid-West states are so important as they have a disproportionate number of votes in the electoral college. The election could be won by as few as 600,000 (or less Shock) votes in the so-called "Swing States" Shock

Martin Luther King's daughter really didn't like Trump saying he has bigger crowds than her father's famous speech...

I have to say, I haven't laughed as much since I saw Bill Bailey in concert!!

I have never been so glad to be driving around Lake Tahoe before. I missed the insanity.

Off to check CNN fact checks.

Can I ask - it was rumoured bigly at the time of Trump's election that he had absolutely no desire to win, it was all to set up Trump TV, his own channel, which would purely be about him throwing shit at Hilary's administration and making a huge load of money doing it (following on from the Apprentice success basically)

Losing the election and being the underdog was meant to be his starting position for that channel.

He was appalled at first then quickly his head ballooned to an even bigger sized ego, of course he was meant to be President! It's why his whole family and team looked stunned.

Is there any chance his silence means he is simply looking at ways to monetise his defeat (if that happens, I'm still not sure of that because of the electoral college)
By resurrecting the Trump TV thing, or some sort of YouTube nonsense that mugs the fan base of their very last dollars?

I don't know if there's any truth about the first time around (could be), but I doubt very much he's hoping to be defeated now.

When he'd never had something, he thought highly of himself for sitting with the big boys and girls playing for it.

Once he had the thing (the presidency), losing it to someone else became intolerable. How could he, he DJT, be a loser?!I

So I'd be surprised if he were capable of just walking away from the presidential race.

(But as discussed earlier on these threads, and by Rachel Maddow, he may be expecting to acquire the role by other means than by people voting for him.)

Exactly. Plus, he now has all of those pesky felonies and upcoming charges he needs to pardon himself from. The stakes are higher for him this time, with the possibility of prison. No way will he bow out.

It’s similar to the UK style…the same way that Lib Dems got a similar number of actual votes as Reform, who only ended up with 4 MPs.

The winner of the state takes all of the electoral points from that state. Nebraska is the only exception.

Dariendreamer · 09/08/2024 01:47

Doesn’t Maine also split its electoral votes? @YankTank

Maybe. I’ve heard Steve Kornacki talk about Nebraska a lot, so Nebraska comes to mind. I’m by no means an electoral college expert!

Overtheatlantic · 09/08/2024 01:58

I don’t think VP Harris needs to stop her campaign for a press interview. She’s got people to see, doors to knock on, phone calls to make….those are her words and nowhere did she mention interviews with the press. And she’s already declined to debate on Fox News. Trump isn’t calling the shots anymore/

Ah. Found my favourite.

I wish there were more like you, and why have you changed your name 100 times?!

NonsuchCastle · 09/08/2024 02:12

Reuters reports an Ipsos poll today giving Harris a 5 point lead. With a 3 point margin of error. Still anyone's game. I'm watching the swing states just like last time.

I'm not sure what the first bit means (in case it's not clear, I'm European and don't have the right to vote in the US, so am not an anti-Trump Republican, just sadly, bigly, obsessed with Trump's machinations and the fact that when America sneezes, the world catches a cold).
As to the second bit, apart from quite a number of name changes I've made on here for various reasons, though they may not yet amount to a hundred, I am particularly fond of Leonard Cohen's version of "The Partisan", which includes the line: "J'ai changé cent fois de nom". My father fought in the French Resistance and was captured and interned in Spain, but, being a day-dreamer, one roll call, forgot the Canadian name he had changed to for camouflage and was promptly sent back to Vichy France. He eventually got some sort of medal for his efforts but being a pacifist at heart, wasn't all that proud of it.

Efacsen · 09/08/2024 09:32

Trump really is now presenting as a confabulating fantasist - confused as to whom he went with in the helicopter and muddling his fear of helicopter crashes with an actual crash

This is the sort of story my father who suffered with dementia used to tell me

It's not just all untrue it's also both sad and very worrying

BruceAndNosh · 09/08/2024 09:54

I would normally try to have compassion for someone with dementia but Trump was a dreadful person when his brain was more functional so nope.
Plus his family and advisors must know he's not all there but they continue to enable him as it suuts their agenda. The GOP know that without Trump, they will need at least 8 years to be electable again

Crucible · 09/08/2024 10:10

@PerkingFaintly @YankTank thanks for the response - my DH worked for a large American company and then a few smaller ones, (small by American standards, not ours) so we have long connections, a friend is Minnesotan, and approves Walz. The rumours at the time were pretty strong about Trump TV in online and IT world. I agree, good psych profile of Trump since that time - he won't let it go now. I was musing on his relative silence in the last few days and did think he would try to monetise again. He could now be eeeeeven more the 'Victim'

Infamy infamy - they've all got it Informeeee!

Kenneth Williams...

Then he goes and does the rambling news conference which puts paid to the theory, at least for now. I really hope for America that they elect Harris/Walz. It's the Electoral College that concerns me.
