Gosh, I didn't realise Ethel Kennedy was still alive!

@SerendipityJane
@BustingBaoBun

The thing is by the how many GOP candidates will have been sacrificed on the altar of his ego ?

OMG really?

Serendipity has a point there. At this point the GOP must have some 'use' for him, if only his apparent 'popularity' (and thus his 'influence') because there are already other politicians out there that would be good and viable GOP candidates.

If they tire of him or he loses whatever that influence is with the GOP, then he'll run third party. But run he will.

Edited

I think the problem is that the Republicans are now stuck. In their kowtowing, they've managed to create a voting public in which the vast majority of Republican voters want no part of a good and viable alternative candidate.

Just turned 96 in April.

AcrossthePond55 · 24/08/2024 00:47

@Wallaw

That's a very good point! They created the monster thinking they could control it and have learnt to their sorrow that they can't. So unless some shooting star flashes across the GOP firmament and dazzles the Trump 'faction' (as opposed to the Trump Cult who will never abandon him), they're stuck with him until he dies or sinks into severe dementia.

HeddaGarbled · 24/08/2024 01:57

I think if he loses this election, that will finish him off. Unfortunately, his legacy will be that the next one is likely to be of his ilk rather than a normal politician and the current ethos of deeming it entirely acceptable to stymie all political measures introduced by the opposition out of sheer contrariness will persist.

NotDonna · 24/08/2024 06:15

Agree. Choosing Vance as his running mate exacerbates ‘Trumpness’. Surely if they had politicians of a different ilk they’d have chosen a running mate that tempers that ‘Trumpness’.

They do have politicians that are less Trump. He could have chosen Nikki Haley and she would have brought a great deal of voters with her, including suburban women. But he didn’t because at the time he was riding high on an almost certainly victorious trajectory so he went with someone like him.

NotDonna · 24/08/2024 07:26

Which could have been disastrous for the Democrats then?

I think the general consensus is that a Trump Haley ticket would have been incredibly difficult for the Dems to beat.

BruceAndNosh · 24/08/2024 08:11

I'm not convinced Kennedy is going to be the vote winner Trump hopes. If his supporters are willing to vote for Trump, why haven't they been Team Trump all along? Some WILL vote Trump hoping that he will give a position to Kennedy, but others will reject the 2 party system. I've already seen comments on Pro Trump YouTube channels saying they WON'T vote for Trump if it means getting Kennedy (not a great Source, I admit!)
Kennedy bashing the Democrats could be a problem.

Or cours, RFK could well be Vance Mark 2, as he is deeply deeply weird. Do the Trump team try to explain his weirdness (like Vance) or reject it?

SerendipityJane · 24/08/2024 08:53

It's obviously tempting to use comparisons with what you know even if they aren't necessarily perfect. Or logical. And US posters may not feel the same. But the discussion of the GOP selling it's soul for Trump is not 100 miles away from a UK Tory party that sold it's soul for Brexit.

I hope it's a valid analogy, since on this side of the pond it was a decision that is leading the Tories to oblivion. In a generations time they will be a historical footnote.

We can only thank our lucky stars that it didn't turn out like a bunch of Germans who sold their soul to shut the weird guy with the Charlie Chaplin moustache up.

I think it’s not a bad analogy to be honest and the current Tory leadership race speaks to this. I’ve been really disappointed in Tom Tugendhat (someone I used to have a great deal of respect for) essentially selling out and suggesting leaving the ECHR might be a good idea. The whiff of power is too appealing for most, you aren’t in politics if you aren’t at least a bit ambitious.

Fellow worms unite... 🐛

RFK Jr.’s worm here: I guess I’m supporting Trump, too.There clearly is only one logical home for me in the 2024 election. I did not want to say so earlier for fear of alienating my host.

My fellow worms and Americans,

It is I, your friend, the worm who ate part of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s brain, then died. It is with a heavy scolex (that’s the knob-like attachment sometimes mistaken for my head) that I report that, after much prayerful consideration, we are leaving the race. My host, as is customary when faced with important decisions, released several falcons and studied their flight, then read the entrails from his roadkill fridge for confirmation; I made a small hecatomb to Worm God and reached the same conclusions.

Ultimately, this came down to values. I say now what I have said this whole campaign: I am a parasite and I do not have the country’s best interests at heart. So it is clear to me now that I have no choice but to drop out of the race and support Donald Trump.

As a creature who seeks only to gorge myself willy-nilly on whatever life offers without concern for what devastation I leave in my wake, I have long admired Donald Trump’s way of doing things. To live off the production of others in a harmful way, and to dwell relentlessly in the minds of people who wish they did not have to devote a corner to me — that is a creed we share. And he frequently speaks of his admiration for Hannibal Lecter, who also famously ate brain, so I know that if we ever met, we would have something to talk about.

I think Obama also did the hand movement well, but the looking at his hands in bemusement as he did it was brilliant. You don't need the article: this picture says it all.

Did you catch his interview where he slammed Walz for "spending the last 4 years whining and never offering any solutions" ?
