For UK people

Channel 4 will screen in full the first head to head debate between Donald Trump & Kamala Harris on September 10th in a specially extended programme hosted by Matt Frei

Let's see if I can continue my streak of ignoring all and every leaders debate ... ever !

Maybe it will clash with the Tory Leadership candidates debate ?

BruceAndNosh · 22/08/2024 08:29

Rumours are swirling that RFK Jr is finally going to drop out, and possibly endorse trump.
What, if anything, will this mean for the race?

Yes - just looking at that. It seems likely that his supporters will most likely switch to Trump. Not sure how many people we're talking about and which state they vote in. But he was going to drop out at some point so maybe now is better than later?

Two different views:

How RFK Jr.'s exit would help Trump, according to the polls

Surveys show that most of Trump's third-party defectors have been picking Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on test ballots with more choices.

Well, I'd vote Democrat just for the par-tay!

A little more on Dems/Harris' approach to Gaza. (from Washington Post)

Day 3 - Democrats have spent much of the week treating the war in Gaza — perhaps their most divisive issue internally — gingerly. It had received only fleeting mentions over the first two days, as pro-Palestinian protests took place outside the convention, and the party has split between the Palestinian and the Israeli causes.

But Democrats leaned in Wednesday, seeking to thread the needle — and seemingly succeeding for the moment.

One of the night’s most poignant moments came when the parents of a hostage held by Hamas, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, spoke about their plight.

Jon Polin, the father, asserted that Biden and Harris were working hard to return the hostages and reach a cease-fire deal. He noted that the hostages spanned many nationalities and religions.

“In an inflamed Middle East, we know the one thing that can most immediately release pressure and bring calm to the entire region: a deal that brings this diverse group of 109 hostages home and ends the suffering of the innocent civilians in Gaza,” Polin said.
In a sign of how unifying the message was, Polin’s comment earned applause from one of the House’s most pro-Palestinian members, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.). The crowd ultimately chanted of the hostages, “Bring them home.”

Speakers have regularly mentioned freeing the hostages alongside a cease-fire — combining the priorities of the two sides of their split party. And thus far, the issue hasn’t boiled over in nearly the way Democrats had feared it might.

Not sure if this will be nearly enough for some of the younger Millennial/Gen Z voters.
In DH's family (very liberal and Jewish) a couple of the nieces and nephews are disappointed and at odds with Biden's continuing support for Netanyahu and are considering not voting at all if things don't change. Our family discussions about not voting on single issues are dismissed. 😔 Try to point out that the Palestinians will have absolutely no future if Trump gets in and that their very own freedoms will be severely curtailed falls on deaf ears. They said they feel GOP/Dems are as bad as each other 🤷‍♀️ However I suspect by the time November comes around they will begrudgingly vote for Harris/Walz.

DBIL pointed out if they don't like it they need to engage and work for change!

Have you seen Gus Walz cheering for his dad?

I'm not crying, it's a bit of dust. I'm definitely not crying.

The Walz family just come across as such a lovely tight knit family.

Who do we reckon the DNC surprise stars are going to be that they’re all hinting at for tonight??

And I’m sorry but the video of Gus is frankly one of the most heartwarming things I’ve ever seen.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 22/08/2024 21:20

Oprah was amazing, Gus is a sweetie. I'm loving the suggestion that GWB is the surprise at the DNC tonight! Better than Mike Pence or Melania!

Igotjelly · 22/08/2024 21:26

Imagine they rolled out Ivanka 😂 Twitter seems convinced it’s Taylor Swift but I just can’t see it.

Likely to be Beyoncé going by the rumours so far. But Xwitter (and Trump) will explode if it's Tay Tay! DBIL's 2 daughters (from NYC) have just been staying with us as they had tickets to see Taylor Swift at Wembley last weekend. If TS can persuade her fans who filled multiple stadiums that can hold up to 92,000 people to vote for Kamala then I'll buy all of her Era albums!

I think it's Beyoncé AND Taylor Swift.

(Throw in Springsteen and Twitter might pass out)

The film of Gus Walz is v touching - a sincere, loving young man and proof of some decent parenting.
How bloody low would you need to be that you'd need to criticise him to get one over your rival?

Igotjelly · 23/08/2024 06:47

And the special guest was………. Absolutely no one! How disappointing 😬😑

BustingBaoBun · 23/08/2024 07:11

She gave away banned books at her Florida shows. I like her.

"
Pink’s banned book has been conceived together with the national free speech group PEN America. They have chosen four titles to give away – Toni Morrison’s Beloved, Todd Parr’s The Family Book, Stacia Deutsch’s Girls Who Code and the poem recited by the poet Amanda Gorman at Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration in January 2021, The Hill We Climb."

So full steam ahead to the first debate?

With all the hoo-hah of Biden stepping back and Harris stepping up, I've lost track of what 'rules' have now been proposed for the debate. Are they going to mute the mics?

Trump et al are still struggling to find avenues of attack and are currently trying to make out that Harris is a communist and trying to poke holes in Walz's military/fertility/coaching history whilst trolling his ND son.
I doubt whether anyone under 60 in the US would fully understand his 'comrade' references and I bet Trump himself couldn't adequately explain 'Reds under the beds' and McCarthyism!

There's no way Trump will stay on the script his advisors want him to. He's going to double down on the personal insults and lies - that's all he's capable of.

OP posts:
Spandauer · 23/08/2024 09:11

And the irony is that Trump's unfiltered adulation of Putin sort of makes him the "comrade"!

I'm just watching Kamala Harris's full speech from last night. Did somebody say she was incapable of stringing two ideas together? She's certainly making a lot of sense to me now, I know the crowd is on-side, but she's not exactly tongue-tied. Is the thought that she has no idea how to debate with Trump? I think she'll tear him apart (if he allows her to speak).
This is the first time I've deliberately watched anything about a Convention of any flavour. The energy there has been on display at the DNC this week is amazing. I hope it translates to an electoral win, for the sake of the American people and the rest of the world.

Edited

She has a bit of a history of not being an amazing orator but agree I thought her speech last night was excellent and she's certainly worked extensively on her delivery. The only thing will be that this was clearly scripted, with her to some extent reading from the teleprompter. She has a bit of a tendency to get into the weeds and waffle a bit when not scripted but I'm certain her and her team will be working on that and prepping heavily ahead of the debate. Plus of course she'll be being compared to the Donald who himself is hardly succinct.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 23/08/2024 12:24

Thank you for the explanation, @Igotjelly. In that case, I'm sure you're right, they must be well aware of her finding it difficult to work without a teleprompter, and will be working with her to up her game, unless Trump rambles non-stop and refuses to let her speak, she should still walk the floor with him.
Did anyone see/hear Trump's phone in to Fox news last night? They actually had to cut his nonsense short and you could see them laughing at him from time to time. www.nytimes.com/2024/08/23/us/politics/trump-reaction-harris-dnc.html?unlocked_article_code=1.FE4.Q7m2.rDHcc1204_zB&smid=url-share

I really hope during the debate they don’t mute his mic because one of the most damaging things for him will be being see. To be a racist misogynistic twat speaking over her. By muting him during Biden speaking they basically made Trump look more reasonable.
