Question about the rioters

RedVanYellowVan · 03/08/2024 18:34

Just reading about the riots and how some rioters are in custody.

How does it work with those who are employed? Does their time away from work come out of annual leave, or is it unpaid leave?

Do some employers just sack them? Either for being in custody, or if they are simply known to have been rioting? Can employers even do that?

Just curious really.

I imagine many are day labourers, so no specific consistent employer.

LarkLane · 04/08/2024 09:37

And you can feck right off calling people who refuse to be knuckle dragging thugs " cowards" Daysandconnfuddled

A 'friend' of mine went to one of these protests yesterday with some partners he works with.

They all own their own businesses, real entrepreneur expensive suit types, he is probably not far off from being a millionaire.

Was pretty surprised tbh he never seemed the type. Some of the clips he sent were pretty benign tbh just people wandering about, in a few he's having a right old laugh with the police 🤔

I'm hoping they went just because they are nosey bastards.

Did I actually say that? And you can also feck off with your swearing, thank you.

I presume the doctors lawyers, accountants, teachers, nurses, managers etc. Rioting have put in their forms with HR?

taxguru · 03/08/2024 19:49

It's a shame that those living on benefits don't get "sacked" from being able to claim benefits in the same way that a worker could be sacked from their job. That would be a real disincentive to riot. Shame should apply to other serious law breaking.

Well those being sacked will invariably claim benefits as getting a job with a criminal record is tricky so the opposite happens really.

KezzaMucklowe · 04/08/2024 09:46

Yy to the less judgmental posters who pointed out that not all tradesmen and menial workers will share the views of the rioters.
What a horrible view to have of people.
To answer your question op, I suppose it depends on company policy, the length of time in custody etc

Harrumphhhh · 04/08/2024 09:48

But what would you be protesting about, @Daysnconfuddled ?

NoSnowdrop · 04/08/2024 09:49

I would imagine a lot don’t have a job, or only menial jobs who won’t care if they’re arrested as they will have a similar mindset.

Nice bit of sneering there @Cadela what do you mean by “only” menial jobs and “similar mindset”. What a disgusting attitude.

See your own post at 08.41. Where you say.
Maybe I genuinely feel that strongly about this that I am prepared to risk my clear DBS. Not everyone is a coward

So yes, you did use the word coward.

AzureBlue99 · 04/08/2024 09:50

Men just love to fight. They come from all demographics and levels of intelligence. They are not all knuckle drafters.

Willmafrockfit · 04/08/2024 09:50

well a criminal record often has to be considered
so of course if you get a criminal record while employed it is up to the employers

Willmafrockfit · 04/08/2024 09:51

i presume they have to wait to be charged before employers can make a decision, legally

Do you have some kind of superpower that enables you to know who is on benefits just by looking at them? @Daysnconfuddled

The comments on this thread are a disgrace

Daysnconfuddled · 04/08/2024 09:52

I agree this whole thread is a disgrace from the start.

I agree. One should not make generalisations, but looking at footage it is possible some of them might be unemployed or in low paid jobs.

They do not all appear to be lawyers, hospital consultants, university professors or similar. I accept I may be making unfair judgements though.

I imagine some may perhaps be employed by people of a similar mindset. We had a couple of tradesmen in for a few hours recently. They did an excellent job but had the radio on and when there was a headline about people arriving on boats what I overheard from them was not pleasant. They had nearly finished the job, otherwise I would have told them to leave.

Perhaps you could explain how you know from looking at footage that they are unemployed or in low paid jobs? Pray, what does a solicitor look like?

Disgraceful snobbery.

There are millions of people who work in 'menial' jobs, whatever they are,who are disgusted by the rioting. It's quite offensive to lump them all together and assume they all think the same.

And those menial workers were very much needed during lockdown, some pp may want to choose their words more carefully.

It's such a shame what they are bringing to our streets. If they are hospital workers or working for the NHS they would be dismissed for gross misconduct.

Well I’d put quite a lot of money on solicitors not setting fire to police stations and throwing bricks at officers.

It’s not rocket science.

LlynTegid · 04/08/2024 15:40

If they are identified I hope their employer if they have one would sack them. I would not want a thug working alongside me.

Sethera · 04/08/2024 15:41

Employers would have to follow due process, even for gross misconduct cases. I would imagine suspension pending a disciplinary hearing; which itself might be pending the outcome of any criminal proceedings. It's not always going to be as simple as person being arrested at a riot = person is a rioter. Someone could claim they just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, for example.

lavendermouse · 04/08/2024 16:20

I think you can tell that lots of the people on mumsnet are middle class and living in areas of no poverty judging by these comments.
Judging people for protesting? I dont recall a thread about the protests in Leeds where they were called knuckle dragging thugs? If there is one please link it here.

God forbid this country goes to war with somewhere like Russia, and it's those scrounging thick benefit claimants or those who work in menial labouring jobs that would be signed up to protect you.

DatingDinosaur · 04/08/2024 17:21

Protesting is fine. When it descends into rioting is becomes a criminal offence. There's a difference.

Anyway, at our place you'd be suspended then dismissed if found guilty. Its actually written into our T&Cs, along with social media etiquette.

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 04/08/2024 17:22

I would imagine they're all going to be facing disciplinary proceedings
