A big boasty boast.

Boast incoming.

My DD15 has ASC and suffered trauma from mainstream schooling which caused severe mental health issues. The MH issues have ruled her life for years, she has rarely left the house in this time and attends online school part time. She is isolated and broken. It has caused enormous conflict in our home due to the ongoing stress all round. No amount of support has got her over her anxiety of going outside of our home.

DD15 finally decided this week, for herself , that she was fed up of her MH dictating her life and she asked me to book her in to a gymnastics class (she’s a previous gymnast).

We have been here many times where she says she’ll join but then when the time comes , she can’t . Whilst I was outwardly enthusiastic, I assumed it would be more wasted money

However, today she has gone!!! I waited in the car and when she came out, I could tell that it has made a world of difference to her . She’s booked and paid for another lesson too!

I know this sounds so trivial, but this is a huge deal for our family and I am so unbelievably proud of her. There is nobody irl to tell , so I’m posting here. I had to hide my tears (of joy) that she has overcome such a huge huge barrier. Please join me in my utter joy!

That's absolutely amazing news op. It's not a boast at all (or if it is, it's a well-earnt one!) Long may it continue 😁

Jb2182 · 03/08/2024 17:04

That is bloody fantastic OP ❤️ not a boast at all, it's brilliant news and should be celebrated 🥳 xxxx

KittytheHare · 03/08/2024 17:05

How wonderful!

TeenToTwenties · 03/08/2024 17:06

I have a DD in anxiety recovery too.
That is fantastic news, so delighted for you!

Catopia · 03/08/2024 17:08

This is great news!

StopItStopItDropIt · 03/08/2024 17:08

Thank you everyone. I’m very emotional today. I can see her healing very slowly and it’s such a relief. Usually she would not commit to anything, but she signed up with the coach for the next class. I’m trying not to pry too much , but it also seems she has got on very well with her training partner. It’s been a very positive experience for her.

That’s awesome news, I understand it’s difficult you want to shout and hug and make a big thing of it but you can’t, well I know with my DD it would stop her going, it’s so hard. But well done , what’s is the saying “ one small step leads you on a journey “ or something. Let’s hope this is the start of something good

AutismTimesTwo · 03/08/2024 17:09

I am absolutely in the thick of it with 3 teens with varying degrees of mental health problems.

This kind of post gives me hope on a very dark day, it is wonderful to hear that the change from her - I think that is absolutely key.

Well done on being there for her through the awful times, may it be onwards and upward from here

Atethehalloweenchocs · 03/08/2024 17:11

That is fantastic! Well done to your DD, and to you for being such a good supportive mum.

Joyfulincolour · 03/08/2024 17:13

Just wonderful @StopItStopItDropIt
As parents of children with ASD, our wins might be different but they are huge achievements. Well done to you & your daughter. I bet it has lifted you both so much 💓

FinalInstructionstotheAudience · 03/08/2024 17:14

Such very good news! I'm watching gymnastics at the moment, so apt.
Your DD and you deserve a big hug!

StopItStopItDropIt · 03/08/2024 17:14

I’m trying to keep cool and calm about it , but I did tell her I’m very very proud of her and that she should be proud of herself, then I left it at that.

@AutismTimesTwo and @TeenToTwenties teen anxiety is very difficult all round . I’m unsure if this resonates, but my DD can not be cajoled or persuaded or ‘therapied’ in to recovery. She will only recover if it’s on her terms and at her pace. Until she has accepted that something needs to change. I’m hoping this is the start of this acceptance. I’m taking it very slow and I know we are not out of the woods yet. I hope you both get to experience this progress at some point too.

That's brilliant, especially because it's a decision she's made for herself and proved to herself that she could see it through. Well done her (and you!)

MrsMitford3 · 03/08/2024 17:15

How wonderful-such a good healthy decision for her to have made!!!

AutismTimesTwo · 03/08/2024 17:19

@StopItStopItDropIt oh absolutely, the decision start to heal has to come from them.

Your story does give me hope that it is possible for that to happen for us in the future.

CandyflossKid · 03/08/2024 17:20

That's amazing! What a big achievement 👏

EATmum · 03/08/2024 17:21

How brilliant! I can only imagine how proud you must feel. Congratulations to you both.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 03/08/2024 17:21

Great news. Step by step. Best wishes to you and your brave DD.

TeenToTwenties · 03/08/2024 17:22

@StopItStopItDropIt My DD has been working very hard on recovery, the change from 4 years ago is tremendous. Little steps when added together can make great progress.

Movingon2024 · 03/08/2024 17:23

Oh op, what wonderful news!

so happy for you and for her!

recovering from MH issues is along slow climb out of the dark valley, with some setbacks along the way, but the moments of sunshine make it all worthwhile!

Lentilweaver · 03/08/2024 17:24

Well done. Sport is so great for kids.

Knittedfairies2 · 03/08/2024 17:25

That's not 'trivial' OP; that's a huge thing for your daughter, all the more so as it was her decision. Onwards and upwards!
